Observations of the 1.083-micron He I line in WR140 (HD 193793) show P-Cygni profiles which varied as the binary system went through periastron passage. A sub-peak appeared on the normally flat-topped emission component and then moved across the profile consistent with its formation in the wind-collision region. Variation of the absorption component provided constraints on the opening angle (theta) of the wind-collision region. Infrared (2-10 micron) images observed with a variety of instruments in 2001-04 resolve the dust cloud formed in 2001, and show it to be expanding at a constant rate. Owing to the high eccentricity of the binary orbit, the dust is spread around the orbital plane in a splash and we compare the dust images with the orientation of the orbit.

The size of the dust torus in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and their high-luminosity counterparts, quasars, can be inferred from the time delay between UV/optical accretion disk continuum variability and the response in the mid-infrared (MIR) torus e mission. This dust reverberation mapping (RM) technique has been successfully applied to $sim 70$ $zlesssim 0.3$ AGN and quasars. Here we present first results of our dust RM program for distant quasars covered in the SDSS Stripe 82 region combining $sim 20$-yr ground-based optical light curves with 10-yr MIR light curves from the WISE satellite. We measure a high-fidelity lag between W1-band (3.4 $mu$m) and $g$ band for 587 quasars over $0.3lesssim zlesssim 2$ ($left<zright>sim 0.8$) and two orders of magnitude in quasar luminosity. They tightly follow (intrinsic scatter $sim 0.17$ dex in lag) the IR lag-luminosity relation observed for $z<0.3$ AGN, revealing a remarkable size-luminosity relation for the dust torus over more than four decades in AGN luminosity, with little dependence on additional quasar properties such as Eddington ratio and variability amplitude. This study motivates further investigations in the utility of dust RM for cosmology, and strongly endorses a compelling science case for the combined 10-yr Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (optical) and 5-yr Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope 2$mu$m light curves in a deep survey for low-redshift AGN dust RM with much lower luminosities and shorter, measurable IR lags. The compiled optical and MIR light curves for 7,384 quasars in our parent sample are made public with this work.
We present the results of two complementary ground-based programmes to determine the host galaxy properties of radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars and to compare them with those of radio galaxies. Both infrared images and optical off-nuclear spectra w ere obtained and we discuss the various strategies used to separate the quasar-related emission from that of the underlying galaxy. However, the key feature of this project is the use of carefully matched samples, which ensure that the data for different types of object are directly comparable.
Studies of transiting extrasolar planets are of key importance for understanding the nature of planets outside our solar system because their masses, diameters, and bulk densities can be measured. An important part of transit-search programmes is the removal of false-positives. The critical question is how many of the candidates that passed all previous tests are false positives. For our study we selected 25 CoRoT candidates that have already been screened against false-positives using detailed analysis of the light curves and seeing-limited imaging, which has transits that are between 0.7 and 0.05% deep. We observed 20 candidates with the adaptive optics imager NaCo and 18 with the high-resolution infrared spectrograph CRIRES. We found previously unknown stars within 2 arcsec of the targets in seven of the candidates. All of these are too faint and too close to the targets to have been previously detected with seeing-limited telescopes in the optical. Our study thus leads to the surprising results that if we remove all candidates excluded by the sophisticated analysis of the light-curve, as well as carrying out deep imaging with seeing-limited telescopes, still 28-35% of the remaining candidates are found to possess companions that are bright enough to be false-positives. Given that the companion-candidates cluster around the targets and that the J-K colours are consistent with physical companions, we conclude that the companion-candidates are more likely to be physical companions rather than unrelated field stars.
We present high resolution images of NGC 2071-IR in the $J$, $H$, and $K$ bands and in the emission at 2.12 $mu$m of the v=$1-0$ $S$(1) line of molecular hydrogen. We also present moderate resolution K-band spectra of two young stellar objects, IRS 1 and IRS 3, within NGC 2071-IR, that are candidates sources of one or more of the outflows observed in the region. Two of the eight originally identified infrared point sources in NGC 2071-IR are binaries, and we identifiy two new sources, one coincident with the radio source VLA-1 and highly reddened. The H2 $Q$(3)/$S$(1) line intensity ratios at IRS 1 and IRS 3 yield high and very high extinctions, respectively, to them, as is implied by their near-infrared colors and K-band continuum slopes. The spectra also reveal the presence of hot, dense circumstellar molecular gas in each, suggesting that both are strong candidates for having energetic molecular outflows. We agree with a previous suggestion that IRS 1 is the likely source of an E-W-oriented outflow and conclude that this outflow is probably largely out of the plane of the sky. We also conclude that if IRS 3 is the source of the large scale NE-SW outflow, as has been previously suggested, its jet/wind must precess in order to explain the angular width of that outflow. We discuss the natures of the point sources and their probable contributions, if any, to the complex morphology of the H2 line emission.
Combining high-resolution spectropolarimetric and imaging data is key to understanding the decay process of sunspots as it allows us scrutinizing the velocity and magnetic fields of sunspots and their surroundings. Active region NOAA 12597 was observ ed on 24/09/2016 with the 1.5-m GREGOR solar telescope using high-spatial resolution imaging as well as imaging spectroscopy and near-infrared (NIR) spectropolarimetry. Horizontal proper motions were estimated with LCT, whereas LOS velocities were computed with spectral line fitting methods. The magnetic field properties were inferred with the SIR code for the Si I and Ca I NIR lines. At the time of the GREGOR observations, the leading sunspot had two light-bridges indicating the onset of its decay. One of the light-bridges disappeared, and an elongated, dark umbral core at its edge appeared in a decaying penumbral sector facing the newly emerging flux. The flow and magnetic field properties of this penumbral sector exhibited weak Evershed flow, moat flow, and horizontal magnetic field. The penumbral gap adjacent to the elongated umbral core and the penumbra in that penumbral sector displayed LOS velocities similar to granulation. The separating polarities of a new flux system interacted with the leading and central part of the already established active region. As a consequence, the leading spot rotated 55-degree in clockwise direction over 12 hours. In the high-resolution observations of a decaying sunspot, the penumbral filaments facing flux emergence site contained a darkened area resembling an umbral core filled with umbral dots. This umbral core had velocity and magnetic field properties similar to the sunspot umbra. This implies that the horizontal magnetic fields in the decaying penumbra became vertical as observed in flare-induced rapid penumbral decay, but on a very different time-scale.
