We present the results of a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 3921. The X-ray morphology of the cluster is elliptical, with the centroid offset from the brightest cluster galaxy by 17 arcsec, and with a pronounced extension toward the NW. Subtraction of a 2D beta model fit to the main cluster emission reveals a large scale, irregular residual structure in the direction of the extension, containing both diffuse emission from the intra cluster medium, and extended emission from the second and third-brightest cluster galaxies (BG2 and BG3). The greatest concentration of galaxies in the subcluster lies at the extreme northern edge of the residual. The cluster exhibits a remarkable temperature structure, in particular a bar of significantly hotter gas, oriented SE-NW and stretching from the centre of the cluster towards BG2 and BG3. Our detailed study of the morphological and thermal structure points to an off-axis merger between a main cluster and a less massive galaxy cluster infalling from the SE. From comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations, and with independent calculations based on simple physical assumptions, we conclude that the merging event is ~0.5 Gyr old. The cluster is thus perhaps the best X-ray observed candidate so far of an intermediate mass ratio, moderate impact parameter merger.

We report the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the close binary HD159176 (O7V + O7V). The observed L_X/L_bol ratio reveals an X-ray luminosity exceeding by a factor ~ 7 the expected value for X-ray emission from single O-stars, therefore sugg esting a wind-wind interaction scenario. EPIC and RGS spectra are fitted consistently with a two temperature mekal optically thin thermal plasma model, with temperatures ranging from ~ 2 to 6 10^6 K. At first sight, these rather low temperatures are consistent with the expectations for a close binary system where the winds collide well before reaching their terminal velocities. We also investigate the variability of the X-ray light curve of HD159176 on various short time scales. No significant variability is found and we conclude that if hydrodynamical instabilities exist in the wind interaction region of HD159176, they are not sufficient to produce an observable signature in the X-ray emission. Hydrodynamic simulations using wind parameters from the literature reveal some puzzling discrepancies. The most striking one concerns the predicted X-ray luminosity which is one or more orders of magnitude larger than the observed one. A significant reduction of the mass loss rate of the components compared to the values quoted in the literature alleviates the discrepancy but is not sufficient to fully account for the observed luminosity. Because hydrodynamical models are best for the adiabatic case whereas the colliding winds in HD159176 are most likely highly radiative, a totally new approach has been envisaged... We examine the XMM X-ray spectrum of the LINER-AGN NGC 7213, which is best fit with a power law, K-alpha emission lines from Fe I, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI and a soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma with kT=0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV. We find a lumino sity of 7x10^(-4) L_Edd, and a lack of soft X-ray excess emission, suggesting a truncated accretion disc. NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties, between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. This supports the notion of a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre through LINER galaxies to Seyferts, likely determined by the amount of material available for accretion in the central regions.

We present results from the XMM-Newton observation of the binary cluster A1750 at z = 0.086. We have performed a detailed study of the surface brightness, temperature and entropy distribution and confirm that the two main clusters of the system (A175 0 N and A1750 C) have just started to interact. From the temperature distribution, we calculate that they are likely to merge sometime in the next 1 Gyr. The more massive cluster, A1750 C, displays a more complicated temperature structure than expected. We detect a hot region associated with a density jump ~450 kpc east of the cluster centre, which appears to be a shock wave. This shock is not connected with the binary merger, but it is intrinsic to A1750 C itself. From simple physical arguments and comparison with numerical simulations, we argue that this shock is related to a merging event that A1750 C has suffered in the past 1-2 Gyr. The larger scale structure around A1750 suggests that the system belongs to a rich supercluster, which would presumably increase the likelihood of merger events. These new XMM-Newton data thus show that A1750 is a complex system, where two clusters are starting to interact before having re-established equilibrium after a previous merger. This merger within a merger indicates that the present day morphology of clusters may depend not only on on-going interactions or the last major merging event, but also on the more ancient merger history, especially in dense environments.

We present the spectral analysis of an early XMM-Newton observation of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 509. We find the hard (2-10 keV) continuum slope, including reflection, to be somewhat flatter ($Gamma=1.75$) than for a typical BLS1. The most obvious feature in the hard X-ray spectrum is a narrow emission line near 6.4 keV, with an equivalent width of 50 eV. The energy and strength of this line is consistent with fluorescence from `neutral iron in the molecular torus, and we note the emerging ubiquity of this feature in XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies over a wide luminosity range. We also find evidence for a second emission line at 6.7-6.9 keV, which we attempt to model by reflection from a highly ionised disc. A `soft excess, evident as an upward curvature in the continuum flux below 1.5 keV, cannot be explained solely by enhanced reflection from the ionised disc. The RGS spectrum shows only weak discrete emission and absorption features in the soft X-ray spectrum, supporting our conclusion that the soft excess emission in Mkn 509 represents the high energy portion of optically thick, thermal emission from the inner accretion disc.

We report on two XMM-Newton observations of the bright narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 taken one year apart (2000 June and 2001 June). The 0.6-10 keV continuum is well described by a soft blackbody component (kT~140-150 eV) plus a steep power la w (Gamma~2.50-2.55). No significant spectral changes are observed between the two observations, although the X-ray flux in the second observation is ~40-50 per cent lower. In both observations we detect a significant absorption edge at a rest-frame energy of ~0.73 keV, corresponding to OVII. The presence of the absorption feature is confirmed by a simultaneous Chandra grating observation in 2000 June, although the best-fitting edge threshold is at a slightly lower energy in the Chandra data, possibly because of a different parameterisation of the underlying X-ray continuum. We find tentative evidence for a broad iron emission line in the 2000 June observation. The results from an analysis of the power spectral density (PSD) function are also presented. The present XMM-Newton data support the idea that the PSD shows two breaks, although the location of the high-frequency break requires further constraints.
