Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a common classifier used for efficient classification with high accuracy. SVM shows high accuracy for classifying melanoma (skin cancer) clinical images within computer-aided diagnosis systems used by skin cancer specialists to detect melanoma early and save lives. We aim to develop a medical low-cost handheld device that runs a real-time embedded SVM- based diagnosis system for use in primary care for early detection of melanoma. In this paper, an optimized SVM classifier is implemented onto a recent FPGA platform using the latest design methodology to be embedded into the proposed device for realizing online efficient melanoma detection on a single system on chip/device. The hardware implementation results demonstrate a high classification accuracy of 97.9% and a significant acceleration factor of 26 from equivalent software implementation on an embedded processor, with 34% of resources utilization and 2 watts for power consumption. Consequently, the implemented system meets crucial embedded systems constraints of high performance and low cost, resources utilization and power consumption, while achieving high classification accuracy.

Recently, Adaboost has been widely used to improve the accuracy of any given learning algorithm. In this paper we focus on designing an algorithm to employ combination of Adaboost with Support Vector Machine as weak component classifiers to be used i n Face Detection Task. To obtain a set of effective SVM-weaklearner Classifier, this algorithm adaptively adjusts the kernel parameter in SVM instead of using a fixed one. Proposed combination outperforms in generalization in comparison with SVM on imbalanced classification problem. The proposed here method is compared, in terms of classification accuracy, to other commonly used Adaboost methods, such as Decision Trees and Neural Networks, on CMU+MIT face database. Results indicate that the performance of the proposed method is overall superior to previous Adaboost approaches.
Deep learning techniques have shown their superior performance in dermatologist clinical inspection. Nevertheless, melanoma diagnosis is still a challenging task due to the difficulty of incorporating the useful dermatologist clinical knowledge into the learning process. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge-aware deep framework that incorporates some clinical knowledge into collaborative learning of two important melanoma diagnosis tasks, i.e., skin lesion segmentation and melanoma recognition. Specifically, to exploit the knowledge of morphological expressions of the lesion region and also the periphery region for melanoma identification, a lesion-based pooling and shape extraction (LPSE) scheme is designed, which transfers the structure information obtained from skin lesion segmentation into melanoma recognition. Meanwhile, to pass the skin lesion diagnosis knowledge from melanoma recognition to skin lesion segmentation, an effective diagnosis guided feature fusion (DGFF) strategy is designed. Moreover, we propose a recursive mutual learning mechanism that further promotes the inter-task cooperation, and thus iteratively improves the joint learning capability of the model for both skin lesion segmentation and melanoma recognition. Experimental results on two publicly available skin lesion datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed method for melanoma analysis.
In this paper, we discuss the issues in automatic recognition of vowels in Persian language. The present work focuses on new statistical method of recognition of vowels as a basic unit of syllables. First we describe a vowel detection system then bri efly discuss how the detected vowels can feed to recognition unit. According to pattern recognition, Support Vector Machines (SVM) as a discriminative classifier and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) as a generative model classifier are two most popular techniques. Current state-ofthe- art systems try to combine them together for achieving more power of classification and improving the performance of the recognition systems. The main idea of the study is to combine probabilistic SVM and traditional GMM pattern classification with some characteristic of speech like band-pass energy to achieve better classification rate. This idea has been analytically formulated and tested on a FarsDat based vowel recognition system. The results show inconceivable increases in recognition accuracy. The tests have been carried out by various proposed vowel recognition algorithms and the results have been compared.
With the advent of multi-core processors, network-on-chip design has been key in addressing network performances, such as bandwidth, power consumption, and communication delays when dealing with on-chip communication between the increasing number of processor cores. As the numbers of cores increase, network design becomes more complex. Therefore, there is a critical need in soliciting computer aid in determining network configurations that afford optimal performance given resources and design constraints. We propose a Pareto-optimization framework that explores the space of possible network configurations to determine optimal network latencies, power consumption, and the corresponding link allocations. For a given number of routers, average network latency and power consumption as example performance objectives can be displayed in form of Pareto-optimal fronts, thus not only offering a design tool, but also enabling trade-off studies.
This article adresses the problem of automatic squamous cells classification for cervical cancer screening using Deep Learning methods. We study different architectures on a public dataset called Herlev dataset, which consists in classifying cells, o btained by cervical pap smear, regarding the severity of the abnormalities they represent. Furthermore, we use an attribution method to understand which cytomorphological features are actually learned as discriminative to classify severity of the abnormalities. Through this paper, we show how we trained a performant classifier: 74.5% accuracy on severity classification and 94% accuracy on normal/abnormal classification.
