Sparse random linear network coding (SRLNC) used as a class of erasure codes to ensure the reliability of multicast communications has been widely investigated. However, an exact expression for the decoding success probability of SRLNC is still unknown, and existing expressions are either asymptotic or approximate. In this paper, we derive an exact expression for the decoding success probability of SRLNC. The key to achieving this is to propose a criterion that a vector is contained in a subspace. To obtain this criterion, we construct a basis of a subspace, with respect to this basis, the coordinates of a vector are known, based on a maximal linearly independent set of the columns of a matrix. The exactness and the computation of the derived expression are demonstrated by a simple example.

For a (single-source) multicast network, the size of a base field is the most known and studied algebraic identity that is involved in characterizing its linear solvability over the base field. In this paper, we design a new class $mathcal{N}$ of mul ticast networks and obtain an explicit formula for the linear solvability of these networks, which involves the associated coset numbers of a multiplicative subgroup in a base field. The concise formula turns out to be the first that matches the topological structure of a multicast network and algebraic identities of a field other than size. It further facilitates us to unveil emph{infinitely many} new multicast networks linearly solvable over GF($q$) but not over GF($q$) with $q < q$, based on a subgroup order criterion. In particular, i) for every $kgeq 2$, an instance in $mathcal{N}$ can be found linearly solvable over GF($2^{2k}$) but emph{not} over GF($2^{2k+1}$), and ii) for arbitrary distinct primes $p$ and $p$, there are infinitely many $k$ and $k$ such that an instance in $mathcal{N}$ can be found linearly solvable over GF($p^k$) but emph{not} over GF($p^{k}$) with $p^k < p^{k}$. On the other hand, the construction of $mathcal{N}$ also leads to a new class of multicast networks with $Theta(q^2)$ nodes and $Theta(q^2)$ edges, where $q geq 5$ is the minimum field size for linear solvability of the network.
The conventional theory of linear network coding (LNC) is only over acyclic networks. Convolutional network coding (CNC) applies to all networks. It is also a form of LNC, but the linearity is w.r.t. the ring of rational power series rather than the field of data symbols. CNC has been generalized to LNC w.r.t. any discrete valuation ring (DVR) in order for flexibility in applications. For a causal DVR-based code, all possible source-generated messages form a free module, while incoming coding vectors to a receiver span the emph{received submodule}. An existing emph{time-invariant decoding} algorithm is at a delay equal to the largest valuation among all invariant factors of the received submodule. This intrinsic algebraic attribute is herein proved to be the optimal decoding delay. Meanwhile, emph{time-variant decoding} is formulated. The meaning of time-invariant decoding delay gets a new interpretation through being a special case of the time-variant counterpart. The optimal delay turns out to be the same for time-variant decoding, but the decoding algorithm is more flexible in terms of decodability check and decoding matrix design. All results apply, in particular, to CNC.

With the phenomenal growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) has potentially been the enabler to guarantee the stringent requirements on latency and reliability. However, how to achieve low latency and ultra-reliability with the random arrival remains open. In this paper, a queue-aware variable-length channel coding is presented over the single URLLC user link, in which the finite blocklength of channel coding is determined based on the random arrival. More particularly, a cross-layer approach is proposed for the URLLC user to establish the optimal tradeoff between the latency and power consumption. With a probabilistic coding framework presented, the cross-layer variable-length coding can be characterized based on a Markov chain. In this way, the optimal delay-power tradeoff is given by formulating an equivalent Linear Programming (LP). By solving this LP, the delay-optimal variable-length coding can be presented based on a threshold-structure on the queue length.
Using tools developed in a recent work by Shen and the second author, in this paper we carry out an in-depth study on the average decoding error probability of the random matrix ensemble over the erasure channel under three decoding principles, namel y unambiguous decoding, maximum likelihood decoding and list decoding. We obtain explicit formulas for the average decoding error probabilities of the random matrix ensemble under these three decoding principles and compute the error exponents. Moreover, for unambiguous decoding, we compute the variance of the decoding error probability of the random matrix ensemble and the error exponent of the variance, which imply a strong concentration result, that is, roughly speaking, the ratio of the decoding error probability of a random code in the ensemble and the average decoding error probability of the ensemble converges to 1 with high probability when the code length goes to infinity.
Leveraging recent progress in physical-layer network coding we propose a new approach to random access: When packets collide, it is possible to recover a linear combination of the packets at the receiver. Over many rounds of transmission, the receive r can thus obtain many linear combinations and eventually recover all original packets. This is by contrast to slotted ALOHA where packet collisions lead to complete erasures. The throughput of the proposed strategy is derived and shown to be significantly superior to the best known strategies, including multipacket reception.
