We revisit a class of non-Hermitian topological models that are Galois conjugates of their Hermitian counter parts. Particularly, these are Galois conjugates of unitary string-net models. We demonstrate these models necessarily have real spectra, and that topological numbers are recovered as matrix elements of operators evaluated in appropriate bi-orthogonal basis, that we conveniently reformulate as a concomitant Hilbert space here. We also compute in the bi-orthogonal basis thetopological entanglement entropy, demonstrating that its real part is related to the quantum dimension of the topological order. While we focus mostly on the Yang-Lee model, the results in the paper apply generally to Galois conjugates.

Galois conjugation relates unitary conformal field theories (CFTs) and topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) to their non-unitary counterparts. Here we investigate Galois conjugates of quantum double models, such as the Levin-Wen model. While th ese Galois conjugated Hamiltonians are typically non-Hermitian, we find that their ground state wave functions still obey a generalized version of the usual code property (local operators do not act on the ground state manifold) and hence enjoy a generalized topological protection. The key question addressed in this paper is whether such non-unitary topological phases can also appear as the ground states of Hermitian Hamiltonians. Specific attempts at constructing Hermitian Hamiltonians with these ground states lead to a loss of the code property and topological protection of the degenerate ground states. Beyond this we rigorously prove that no local change of basis can transform the ground states of the Galois conjugated doubled Fibonacci theory into the ground states of a topological model whose Hermitian Hamiltonian satisfies Lieb-Robinson bounds. These include all gapped local or quasi-local Hamiltonians. A similar statement holds for many other non-unitary TQFTs. One consequence is that the Gaffnian wave function cannot be the ground state of a gapped fractional quantum Hall state.

We consider the string-net model obtained from $SU(2)_2$ fusion rules. These fusion rules are shared by two different sets of anyon theories. In this work, we study the competition between the two corresponding non-Abelian quantum phases in the ladde r geometry. A detailed symmetry analysis shows that the nontrivial low-energy sector corresponds to the transverse-field cluster model that displays a critical point described by the $so(2)_1$ conformal field theory. Other sectors are obtained by freezing spins in this model.
Foliated fracton order is a qualitatively new kind of phase of matter. It is similar to topological order, but with the fundamental difference that a layered structure, referred to as a foliation, plays an essential role and determines the mobility r estrictions of the topological excitations. In this work, we introduce a new kind of field theory to describe these phases: a foliated field theory. We also introduce a new lattice model and string-membrane-net condensation picture of these phases, which is analogous to the string-net condensation picture of topological order.

We discuss a way to construct a commuting projector Hamiltonian model for a (3+1)d topological superconductor in class DIII. The wave function is given by a sort of string net of the Kitaev wire, decorated on the time reversal (T) domain wall. Our Ha miltonian is provided on a generic 3d manifold equipped with a discrete form of the spin structure. We will see how the 3d spin structure induces a 2d spin structure (called a Kasteleyn direction on a 2d lattice) on T domain walls, which makes possible to define fluctuating Kitaev wires on them. Upon breaking the T symmetry in our model, we find the unbroken remnant of the symmetry which is defined on the time reversal domain wall. The domain wall supports the 2d non-trivial SPT protected by the unbroken symmetry, which allows us to determine the SPT classification of our model, based on the recent QFT argument by Hason, Komargodski, and Thorngren.
We study a string-net ladder in the presence of a string tension. Focusing on the simplest non-Abelian anyon theory with a quantum dimension larger than two, we determine the phase diagram and find a Russian doll spectrum featuring size-independent e nergy levels as well as highly degenerate zero-energy eigenstates. At the self-dual points, we compute the gap exactly by using a mapping onto the Temperley-Lieb chain. These results are in stark constrast with the ones obtained for Fibonacci or Ising theories.
