High-quality single crystals of CoTiO$_3$ are grown and used to elucidate in detail structural and magnetostructural effects by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization measurements. In addition, we refine the single-crystal structure of the ilmenite ($Rbar{3}$) phase. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_mathrm{N}$, pronounced $lambda$-shaped anomaly in the thermal expansion coefficients signals shrinking of both the $c$ and $b$ axes, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling with uniaxial pressure along $c$ yielding six times larger effect on $T_mathrm{N}$ than the pressure applied in-plane. The hydrostatic pressure dependency derived by means of Gruneisen analysis amounts to $partial T_mathrm{N}/ partial papprox 2.7(4)$~K/GPa. The high-field magnetization studies in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T along with high-field thermal expansion measurements facilitate in constructing the complete anisotropic magnetic phase diagram of CoTiO$_3$. While the results confirm the presence of significant magnetodielectric coupling, our data show that magnetism drives the observed structural, dielectric, and magnetic changes both in the short-range ordered regime well-above $T_mathrm{N}$ as well as in the long-range magnetically ordered phase.

We report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on the uniaxial length changes in a NdB$_4$ single crystal. The evolution of magnetically ordered phases below $T_{rm N}$= 17.2~K (commensurate antiferromagnetic phase, cAFM), $T_{rm IT}$= 6.8 ~K (intermediate incommensurate phase, IT), and $T_{rm LT}$= 4.8~K (low-temperature phase, LT) is associated with pronounced anomalies in the thermal expansion coefficients. The data imply significant magneto-elastic coupling and evidence of a structural phase transition at $T_{rm LT}$ . While both cAFM and LT favor structural anisotropy $delta$ between in-plane and out-of-plane length changes, it competes with the IT-type of order, i.e., $delta$ is suppressed in that phase. Notably, finite anisotropy well above $T_{rm N}$ indicates short-range correlations which are, however, of neither cAFM, IT, nor LT-type. Gruneisen analysis of the ratio of thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat enables the derivation of uniaxial as well as hydrostatic pressure dependencies. While $alpha$/$c_{rm p}$ evidences a single dominant energy scale in LT, our data imply precursory fluctuations of a competing phase in IT and cAFM, respectively. Our results suggest the presence of orbital degrees of freedom competing with cAFM and successive evolution of a magnetically and orbitally ordered ground state.

We report the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystalline LiFePO$_4$ in magnetic fields up to 58~T and present a detailed study of magneto-elastic coupling by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. Large anomalies at tn in the thermal exp ansion coefficient $alpha$ imply pronounced magneto-elastic coupling. Quantitative analysis yields the magnetic Gruneisen parameter $gamma_{rm mag}=6.7(5)cdot 10^{-7}$~mol/J. The positive hydrostatic pressure dependence $dT_{rm N}/dp = 1.46(11)$~K/GPa is dominated by uniaxial effects along the $a$-axis. Failure of Gruneisen scaling below $approx 40$~K, i.e., below the peak temperature in the magneto-electric coupling coefficient [onlinecite{toft2015anomalous}], implies several competing degrees of freedom and indicates relevance of recently observed hybrid excitations~[onlinecite{yiu2017hybrid}]. A broad and strongly magnetic-field-dependent anomaly in $alpha$ in this temperature regime highlight the relevance of structure changes. Upon application of magnetic fields $B||b$-axis, a pronounced jump in the magnetisation implies spin-reorientation at $B_{rm SF} = 32$~T as well as a precursing phase at 29~T and $T=1.5$~K. In a two-sublattice mean-field model, the saturation field $B_{rm sat,b} = 64(2)$~T enables the determination of the effective antiferromagnetic exchange interaction $J_{rm af} = 2.68(5)$~meV as well as the anisotropies $D_{rm b} = -0.53(4)$~meV and $D_{rm c} = 0.44(8)$~meV.
The interactions between elementary excitations such as phonons, plasmons, magnons, or particle-hole pairs, drive emergent functionalities and electronic instabilities such as multiferroic behaviour, anomalous thermoelectric properties, polar order, or superconductivity. Whereas various hybrid excitations have been studied extensively, the feed-back of prototypical elementary excitations on the crystal electric fields (CEF), defining the environment in which the elementary excitations arise, has been explored for very strong coupling only. We report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy and ab-initio phonon calculations of {ceaual}, an archetypal fluctuating valence compound. The high resolution of our data allows us to quantify the energy scales of three coupling mechanisms between phonons, CEF-split localized 4f electron states, and conduction electrons. Although these interactions do not appear to be atypically strong for this class of materials, we resolve, for the first time, a profound renormalization of low-energy quasiparticle excitations on all levels. The key anomalies of the spectrum we observe comprise (1) the formation of a CEF-phonon bound state with a comparatively low density of acoustic phonons reminiscent of vibronic modes observed in other materials, where they require a pronounced abundance of optical phonons, (2) an anti-crossing of CEF states and acoustic phonons, and (3) a strong broadening of CEF states due to the hybridization with more itinerant excitations. The fact that all of these features are well resolved in CeAuAl$_3$ suggests that similar hybrid excitations should also be dominant in a large family of related materials. This promises a predictive understanding towards the discovery of new magneto-elastic functionalities and instabilities.
We carried out detailed studies of the magnetic structure, magnetoelastic coupling, and thermal properties of EuCrO$_3$ nano-powders from room temperature to liquid helium temperature. Our neutron powder diffraction and X-ray powder diffraction measu rements provide precise atomic positions of all atoms in the cell, especially for the light oxygen atoms. The low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data revealed extra Bragg peaks of magnetic origin which can be attributed to a $G_x$ antiferromagnetic structure with an ordered moment of $sim$ 2.4 $mu_{rm B}$ consistent with the $3d^3$ electronic configuration of the Cr$^{3+}$ cations. Apart from previously reported antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic transitions in EuCrO$_3$ at low temperatures, we also observed an anomaly at about 100 K. This anomaly was observed in temperature dependence of samples, lattice parameters, thermal expansion, Raman spectroscopy, permittivity and conductance measurements. This anomaly is attributed to the magnetoelastic distortion in the EuCrO$_3$ crystal.
A detailed electronic phase diagram of perovskite-type oxides Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeO$_3$ $(0leq x leq 0.5)$ was established by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and transport measurements for polycrystalline samples synthesized by a high-pre ssure technique. Among three kinds of helimagnetic phases in SrFeO$_3$ at zero field, two of them showing multiple-${it q}$ helimagnetic spin textures tend to rapidly disappear in cubic symmetry upon the La substitution with $x$ less than 0.1, which accompanies the loss of metallic nature. On the other hand, the third helimagnetic phase apparently remains robustly in Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeO$_3$ with $x$ higher than 0.1, followed by merging to the spin/charge ordered phase with $xsim 1/3$. We propose an important role of itinerant ligand holes on the emergence of multiple-${it q}$ states and a possible link between the third (putative single-${it q}$) helimagnetic phase in SrFeO$_3$ and the spin/charge ordered phase in Sr$_{2/3}$La$_{1/3}$FeO$_3$.
