The interface stresses at of the solid-melt interface are, in general, anisotropic. The anisotropy in the interfacial stress can be evaluated using molecular dynamics (MD) and phase field crystal (PFC) models. In this paper, we report our results on the evaluation of the anisotropy in interface stress in a BCC solid with its melt. Specifically, we study Fe using both MD and PFC models. We show that while both MD and PFC can be used for the evaluation, and the PFC and the amplitude equations based on PFC give quantitatively consistent results, the MD and PFC results are qualitatively the same but do not match quantitatively. We also find that even though the interfacial free energy is only weakly anisotropic in BCC interfacial stress anisotropy is strong. This strong anisotropy has implications for the equilibrium shapes, growth morphologies and other properties at nano-scale in these materials.

Spatial distributions are presented that quantitatively capture how polymer properties (e.g., segment alignment, density, and potential energy) vary with distance from nascent polymer crystals (nuclei) in prototypical polyethylene melts. It is reveal ed that the spatial extent of nuclei and their interfaces is metric-dependent as is the extent to which nucleus interiors are solid-like. As distance from a nucleus increases, some properties, such as density, decay to melt-like behavior more rapidly than polymer segment alignment, indicating that a polymer nucleus resides in a nematic-like droplet. This nematic-like droplet region coincides with enhanced formation of ordered polymer segments that are not part of the nucleus. It is more favourable to find non-constituent ordered polymer segments near a nucleus than in the surrounding metastable melt, pointing to the possibility of one nucleus inducing the formation of other nuclei. These findings provide a conceptual bridge between polymer crystal nucleation under non-flow and flow conditions, and are used to rationalize previous results.
We report on the study of both perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at an oxide/ferromagnetic metal (FM) interface, i.e. BaTiO3 (BTO)/CoFeB. Thanks to the functional properties of the BTO film and the ca pability to precisely control its growth, we are able to distinguish the dominant role of the oxide termination (TiO2 vs BaO), from the moderate effect of ferroelectric polarization in the BTO film, on the PMA and DMI at the oxide/FM interface. We find that the interfacial magnetic anisotropy energy of the BaO-BTO/CoFeB structure is two times larger than that of the TiO2-BTO/CoFeB, while the DMI of the TiO2-BTO/CoFeB interface is larger. We explain the observed phenomena by first-principles calculations, which ascribe them to the different electronic states around the Fermi level at the oxide/ferromagnetic metal interfaces and the different spin-flip processes. This study paves the way for further investigation of the PMA and DMI at various oxide/FM structures and thus their applications in the promising field of energy-efficient devices.

Nonreciprocal charge transport, which is frequently termed as electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (EMCA) in chiral conductors, touches the most important elements of modern condensed matter physics. Here, we have investigated the EMCA in Pt/PtMnGa (P MG) bilayers with the assitance of nonequilibrium fluctuation theorems. Large EMCA in the Pt/PMG bilayers can be attributed to nonreciprocal response of an interface-driven chiral transport channel. Due to the presence of large charge fluctuations for small current region, higher order EMCA coefficients should be added and they are all functions of current. A combination of asymmetrical electron scattering and spin-dependent scattering furnish the PMG thickness dependent chiral transport behaviors in Pt/PMG bilayers. The dramatically enhanced anomalous Hall angle of PMG further demonstrates the modified surface state properties by strong spin-orbit coupling.

Interfacial charge transfer is widely assumed to obey Butler-Volmer kinetics. For certain liquid-solid interfaces, Marcus-Hush-Chidsey theory is more accurate and predictive, but it has not been applied to porous electrodes. Here we report a simple m ethod to extract the charge transfer rates in carbon-coated LiFePO4 porous electrodes from chronoamperometry experiments, obtaining curved Tafel plots that contradict the Butler-Volmer equation but fit the Marcus-Hush-Chidsey prediction over a range of temperatures. The fitted reorganization energy matches the Born solvation energy for electron transfer from carbon to the iron redox site. The kinetics are thus limited by electron transfer at the solid-solid (carbon-LixFePO4) interface, rather than by ion transfer at the liquid-solid interface, as previously assumed. The proposed experimental method generalizes Chidseys method for phase-transforming particles and porous electrodes, and the results show the need to incorporate Marcus kinetics in modeling batteries and other electrochemical systems.

The spin dependent reflection at the interface is the key element to understand the spin transport. By completely solving the scattering problem based on first principles method, we obtained the spin resolved reflectivity spectra. The comparison of o ur theoretical results with experiment is good in a large energy scale from Fermi level to energy above vacuum level. It is found that interfacial distortion is crucial for understanding the spin dependence of the phase gain at the Cu$|$Co interface. Near the Fermi level, image state plays an important role to the phase accumulation in the copper film.
