We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetic phases in twisted bilayer Cr-trihalides through a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. We show that the stacking-dependent interlayer exchange leads to an effective moire field that is mostly ferromagnetic with antiferromagnetic patches. A wide range of noncollinear magnetic phases can be stabilized as a function of the twist angle and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a result of the competing interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling and the energy cost for forming domain walls. In particular, we demonstrate that for small twist angles various skyrmion crystal phases can be stabilized in both CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$. Our results provide an interpretation for the recent observation of noncollinear magnetic phases in twisted bilayer CrI$_3$ and demonstrate the possibility of engineering further nontrivial magnetic ground states in twisted bilayer Cr-trihalides.
It has been predicted theoretically and indirectly confirmed experimentally that single-layer CrX$_3$ (X=Cl, Br, I) might be the prototypes of topological magnetic insulators (TMI). In this work, by using first-principles calculations combined with a
tomistic spin dynamics we provide a complete picture of the magnetic interactions and magnetic excitations in CrX$_3$. The focus is here on the two most important aspects for the actual realization of TMI, namely the relativistic magnetic interactions and the finite-size (edge) effects. We compute the full interaction tensor, which includes both Kitaev and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya terms, which are considered as the most likely mechanisms for stabilizing topological magnons. First, we instigate the properties of bulk CrI$_3$ and compare the simulated magnon spectrum with the experimental data [Phys. Rev. X 8, 041028 (2018)]. Our results suggest that a large size of topological gap, seen in experiment ($approx$ 4 meV), can not be explained by considering pair-wise spin interactions only. We identify several possible reasons for this disagreement and suggest that a pronounced magneto-elastic coupling should be expected in this class of materials. The magnetic interactions in the monolayers of CrX$_3$ are also investigated. The strength of the anisotropic interactions is shown to scale with the position of halide atom in the Periodic Table, the heavier the element the larger is the anisotropy. Comparing the magnons for the bulk and single-layer CrI$_3$, we find that the size of the topological gap becomes smaller in the latter case. Finally, we investigate finite-size effects in monolayers and demonstrate that the anisotropic couplings between Cr atoms close to the edges are much stronger than those in ideal periodic structure. This should have impact on the dynamics of the magnon edge modes in this class of materials.
Fabricating van der Waals (vdW) bilayer heterostructures (BL-HS) by stacking the same or different two-dimensional (2D) layers, offers a unique physical system with rich electronic and optical properties. Twist-angle between component layers has emer
ged as a remarkable parameter that can control the period of lateral confinement, and nature of the exciton (Coulomb bound electron-hole pair) in reciprocal space thus creating exotic physical states including moire excitons. In this review article, we focus on opto-electronic properties of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor twisted BL-HS. We look at existing evidence of moire excitons in localized and strongly correlated states, and at nanoscale mapping of moire superlattice and lattice-reconstruction. This review will be helpful in guiding the community as well as motivating work in areas such as near-field optical measurements and controlling the creation of novel physical states.
We present a comparative study of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br (Cu-2252(X)) and the newly synthesized Cu4Te5O12Cl4 (Cu-45124(Cl)) based on ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The magnetic behavior of
Cu-45124(Cl) with a phase transition to an ordered state at a lower critical temperature T$_c$=13.6K than in Cu-2252(Cl) (T$_c$=18K) can be well understood in terms of the modified interaction paths. We identify the relevant structural changes between the two systems and discuss the hypothetical behavior of the not yet synthesized Cu-45124(Br) with an ab initio relaxed structure using Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics.
We calculate the strength of the effective onsite Coulomb interaction (Hubbard $U$) in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal (TM) dihalides MX$_2$ and trihalides MX$_3$ (M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; X=Cl, Br, I) from first principles using the constr
ained random-phase approximation. The correlated subspaces are formed from $t_{2g}$ or $e_g$ bands at the Fermi energy. Elimination of the efficient screening taking place in these narrow bands gives rise to sizable interaction parameters U between the localized $t_{2g}$ ($e_g$) electrons. Due to this large Coulomb interaction, we find $U/W >1$ (with the band width $W$) in most TM halides, making them strongly correlated materials. Among the metallic TM halides in paramagnetic state, the correlation strength $U/W$ reaches a maximum in NiX$_2$ and CrX$_3$ with values much larger than the corresponding values in elementary TMs and other TM compounds. Based on the Stoner model and the calculated $U$ and $J$ values, we discuss the tendency of the electron spins to order ferromagnetically.
We present a novel approach to understanding the extraordinary diversity of magnetic skyrmion solutions. Our approach combines a new classification scheme with efficient analytical and numerical methods. We introduce the concept of chiral kinks to ac
count for regions of disfavoured chirality in spin textures, and classify two-dimensional magnetic skyrmions in terms of closed domain walls carrying such chiral kinks. In particular, we show that the topological charge of magnetic skyrmions can be expressed in terms of the constituent closed domain walls and chiral kinks. Guided by our classification scheme, we propose a method for creating hitherto unknown magnetic skyrmions which involves initial spin configurations formulated in terms of holomorphic functions and subsequent numerical energy minimization. We numerically study the stability of the resulting magnetic skyrmions for a range of external fields and anisotropy parameters, and provide quantitative estimates of the stability range for the whole variety of skyrmions with kinks. We show that the parameters limiting this range can be well described in terms of the relative energies of particular skyrmion solutions and isolated stripes with and without chiral kinks.
