We propose to enhance the performance of localized plasmon structured illumination microscopy (LP-SIM) via intensity correlations. LP-SIM uses sub-wavelength illumination patterns to encode high spatial frequency information. It can enhance the resolution up to three-fold before gaps in the OTF support arise. For blinking fluorophores or for quantum antibunching an intensity correlation analysis induces higher harmonics of the illumination pattern and enlarges the effective OTF. This enables ultrahigh resolutions without gaps in the OTF support, and thus a fully deterministic imaging scheme. We present simulations that include shot and external noise and demonstrate the resolution power under realistic photon budgets. The technique has potential in light microscopy where low-intensity illumination is paramount while aiming for high spatial but moderate temporal resolutions.

Video-rate super-resolution imaging through biological tissue can visualize and track biomolecule interplays and transportations inside cellular organisms. Structured illumination microscopy allows for wide-field super resolution observation of biolo gical samples but is limited by the strong absorption and scattering of light by biological tissues, which degrades its imaging resolution. Here we report a photon upconversion scheme using lanthanide-doped nanoparticles for wide-field super-resolution imaging through the biological transparent window, featured by near-infrared and low-irradiance nonlinear structured illumination. We demonstrate that the 976 nm excitation and 800 nm up-converted emission can mitigate the aberration. We found that the nonlinear response of upconversion emissions from single nanoparticles can effectively generate the required high spatial frequency components in Fourier domain. These strategies lead to a new modality in microscopy with a resolution of 130 nm, 1/7th of the excitation wavelength, and a frame rate of 1 fps.
In this communication, a fast reconstruction algorithm is proposed for fluorescence textit{blind} structured illumination microscopy (SIM) under the sample positivity constraint. This new algorithm is by far simpler and faster than existing solutions , paving the way to 3D and/or real-time 2D reconstruction.
We demonstrate a high-performance apertureless near-field probe made of a tapered metal tip with a set of periodic shallow grooves near the apex. The spontaneous emission from a single emitter near the tip is investigated systematically for the side- illumination tip enhanced spectroscopy (TES). In contrast with the bare tapered metal tip in conventional side-illumination TES, the corrugated probe not only enhances strongly local excitation field but also concentrates the emission directivity, which leads to high collection efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio. In particular, we propose an asymmetric TES tip based on two coupling nanorods with different length at the apex to realize unidirectional enhanced emission rate from a single emitter. Interestingly, we find that the radiation pattern is sensitive to the emission wavelength and the emitter positions respective to the apex, which can result in an increase of signal-to-noise ratio by suppressing undesired signal. The proposed asymmetrical corrugated probe opens up a broad range of practical applications, e.g. increasing the detection efficiency of tip enhanced spectroscopy at the single-molecule level.
In traditional Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) schemes, the thermal intensity-intensity correlations are phase insensitive. Here we propose a modified HBT scheme with phase conjugation to demonstrate the phase-sensitive and nonfactorizable features for thermal intensity-intensity correlation speckle. Our scheme leads to results that are similar to those of the two-photon speckle. We discuss the possibility of the experimental realization. The results provide us a deeper insight of the thermal correlations and may lead to more significant applications in imaging and speckle technologies.
In this paper, a compact and low-cost structured illumination microscope (SIM) based on a 2X2 fiber coupler is presented. Fringe illumination is achieved by placing two output fiber tips at a conjugate Fourier plane of the sample plane as the point s ources. Raw structured illumination (SI) images in different pattern orientations are captured when rotating the fiber mount. Following this, high resolution images are reconstructed from no-phase-shift raw SI images by using a joint Richardson-Lucy (jRL) deconvolution algorithm. Compared with an SLM-based SIM system, our method provides a much shorter illumination path, high power efficiency, and low cost.
