We propose a decentralized receiver for extra-large multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) arrays. Our method operates with no central processing unit (CPU) and all the signal detection tasks are done in distributed nodes. We exploit a combined message-passing framework to design an uncoordinated detection scheme that overcomes three major challenges in the XL-MIMO systems: computational complexity, scalability and non-stationarities in user energy distribution. Our numerical evaluations show a significant performance improvement compared to benchmark distributed methods while operating very close to the centralized receivers.

Algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink detection typically rely on a centralized approach, by which baseband data from all antennas modules are routed to a central node in order to be processed. In case of Massive MIMO, where hundreds or thousands of ant ennas are expected in the base-station, this architecture leads to a bottleneck, with critical limitations in terms of interconnection bandwidth requirements. This paper presents a fully decentralized architecture and algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink based on recursive methods, which do not require a central node for the detection process. Through a recursive approach and very low complexity operations, the proposed algorithms provide a sequence of estimates that converge asymptotically to the zero-forcing solution, without the need of specific hardware for matrix inversion. The proposed solution achieves significantly lower interconnection data-rate than other architectures, enabling future scalability.
Coprime arrays enable Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) estimation of an increased number of sources. To that end, the receiver estimates the autocorrelation matrix of a larger virtual uniform linear array (coarray), by applying selection or averaging to th e physical arrays autocorrelation estimates, followed by spatial-smoothing. Both selection and averaging have been designed under no optimality criterion and attain arbitrary (suboptimal) Mean-Squared-Error (MSE) estimation performance. In this work, we design a novel coprime array receiver that estimates the coarray autocorrelations with Minimum-MSE (MMSE), for any probability distribution of the source DoAs. Our extensive numerical evaluation illustrates that the proposed MMSE approach returns superior autocorrelation estimates which, in turn, enable higher DoA estimation performance compared to standard counterparts.
In an extra-large scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) system, the antenna arrays have a large physical size that goes beyond the dimensions in traditional MIMO systems. Because of this large dimensionality, the optimization of an XL-MIMO system leads to solutions w ith prohibitive complexity when relying on conventional optimization tools. In this paper, we propose a design based on machine learning for the downlink of a multi-user setting with linear pre-processing, where the goal is to select a limited mapping area per user, i.e. a small portion of the array that contains the beamforming energy to the user. We refer to this selection as spatial user mapping (SUM). Our solution relies on learning using deep convolutional neural networks with a distributed architecture that is built to manage the large system dimension. This architecture contains one network per user where all the networks work in parallel and exploit specific non-stationary properties of the channels along the array. Our results show that, once the parallel networks are trained, they provide the optimal SUM solution in more than $80%$ of the instances, resulting in a negligible sum-rate loss compared to a system using the optimal SUM solution while providing an insightful approach to rethink these kinds of problems that have no closed-form solution.
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for the fifth generation (5G) cellular communications can also enable single-anchor positioning and object tracking due to its large bandwidth and inherently high angular resolutio n. In this paper, we introduce the newly invented concept, large intelligent surface (LIS), to mmWave positioning systems, study the theoretical performance bounds (i.e., Cramer-Rao lower bounds) for positioning, and evaluate the impact of the number of LIS elements and the value of phase shifters on the position estimation accuracy compared to the conventional scheme with one direct link and one non-line-of-sight path. It is verified that better performance can be achieved with a LIS from the theoretical analyses and numerical study.
Algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding typically rely on a centralized approach, by which baseband data from all antenna modules are routed to a central node in order to be processed. In the case of Massive MIMO, where hu ndreds or thousands of antennas are expected in the base-station, said routing becomes a bottleneck since interconnection throughput is limited. This paper presents a fully decentralized architecture and an algorithm for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding based on the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) method, which does not require a central node for these tasks. Through a recursive approach and very low complexity operations, the proposed algorithm provides a good trade-off between performance, interconnection throughput and latency. Further, our proposed solution achieves significantly lower interconnection data-rate than other architectures, enabling future scalability.
