I report a tentative ($sim4sigma$) emission line at $ u=100.84,$GHz from COS-3mm-1, a 3mm-selected galaxy reported by Williams et al. 2019 that is undetected at optical and near infrared wavelengths. The line was found in the ALMA Science Archive after re-processing ALMA band 3 observations targeting a different source. Assuming the line corresponds to the $rm CO(6to5)$ transition, this tentative detection implies a spectroscopic redshift of $z=5.857$, in agreement with the galaxys redshift constraints from multi-wavelength photometry. This would make this object the highest redshift 3mm-selected galaxy and one of the highest redshift dusty star-forming galaxies known to-date. Here, I report the characteristics of this tentative detection and the physical properties that can be inferred assuming the line is real. Finally, I advocate for follow-up observations to corroborate this identification and to confirm the high-redshift nature of this optically-dark dusty star-forming galaxy.

We report the detection of a large ($sim90$ kpc) and luminous $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ nebula [$Lmathrm{_{Lyalpha}}$ = $(6.80pm0.08)times 10^{44}$] $rm{,erg,s^{-1}}$ around an optically faint (r$>23$ mag) radio galaxy M1513-2524 at $zmathrm{_{em}}$=3.132. T he double-lobed radio emission has an extent of 184 kpc, but the radio core, i.e., emission associated with the active galactic nucleus (AGN) itself, is barely detected. This object was found as part of our survey to identify high-$z$ quasars based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) colors. The optical spectrum has revealed $mathrm{Lyalpha}$, NV, CIV and HeII emission lines with a very weak continuum. Based on long-slit spectroscopy and narrow band imaging centered on the $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ emission, we identify two spatial components: a compact component with high velocity dispersion ($sim 1500$$rm{,km,s^{-1}}$) seen in all three lines, and an extended component, having low velocity dispersion (i.e., 700-1000$rm{,km,s^{-1}}$). The emission line ratios are consistent with the compact component being in photoionization equilibrium with an AGN. We also detect spatially extended associated $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ absorption, which is blue-shifted within 250-400$rm{,km,s^{-1}}$ of the $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ peak. The probability of $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ absorption detection in such large radio sources is found to be low ($sim$10%) in the literature. M1513-2524 belongs to the top few percent of the population in terms of $mathrm{Lyalpha}$ and radio luminosities. Deep integral field spectroscopy is essential for probing this interesting source and its surroundings in more detail.
We compare the physical and morphological properties of z ~ 2 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) identified in the HETDEX Pilot Survey and narrow band studies with those of z ~ 2 optical emission line galaxies (oELGs) identified via HST WFC3 infrar ed grism spectroscopy. Both sets of galaxies extend over the same range in stellar mass (7.5 < logM < 10.5), size (0.5 < R < 3.0 kpc), and star-formation rate (~1 < SFR < 100). Remarkably, a comparison of the most commonly used physical and morphological parameters -- stellar mass, half-light radius, UV slope, star formation rate, ellipticity, nearest neighbor distance, star formation surface density, specific star formation rate, [O III] luminosity, and [O III] equivalent width -- reveals no statistically significant differences between the populations. This suggests that the processes and conditions which regulate the escape of Ly-alpha from a z ~ 2 star-forming galaxy do not depend on these quantities. In particular, the lack of dependence on the UV slope suggests that Ly-alpha emission is not being significantly modulated by diffuse dust in the interstellar medium. We develop a simple model of Ly-alpha emission that connects LAEs to all high-redshift star forming galaxies where the escape of Ly-alpha depends on the sightline through the galaxy. Using this model, we find that mean solid angle for Ly-alpha escape is 2.4+/-0.8 steradians; this value is consistent with those calculated from other studies.

Massive black holes (BHs) in dwarf galaxies can provide strong constraints on BH seeds, however reliably detecting them is notoriously difficult. High resolution radio observations were recently used to identify accreting massive BHs in nearby dwarf galaxies, with a significant fraction found to be non-nuclear. Here we present the first results of our optical follow-up of these radio-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies using integral field unit (IFU) data from Gemini-North. We focus on the dwarf galaxy J1220+3020, which shows no clear optical AGN signatures in its nuclear SDSS spectrum covering the radio source. With our new IFU data, we confirm the presence of an active BH via the AGN coronal line [Fe X] and enhanced [O I] emission coincident with the radio source. Furthermore, we detect broad H$alpha$ emission and estimate a BH mass of $M_{rm BH}=10^{4.9}M_odot$. We compare the narrow emission line ratios to standard BPT diagnostics and shock models. Spatially-resolved BPT diagrams show some AGN signatures, particularly in [O I]/H$alpha$, but overall do not unambiguously identify the AGN. A comparison of our data to shock models clearly indicates shocked emission surrounding the AGN. The physical model most consistent with the data is an active BH with a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) that both photoionizes and shock-excites the surrounding gas. We conclude that feedback is important in radio-selected BHs in dwarf galaxies, and that radio surveys may probe a population of low accretion-rate BHs in dwarf galaxies that cannot be detected through optical surveys alone.

We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.62 located in the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey XMM-LSS field. This structure was selected solely as an overdensity of galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors, satisfying [3.6]-[4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. Photometric redshifts derived from Subaru XMM Deep Survey (BViz-bands), UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Ultra-Deep Survey (UKIDSS-UDS, JK-bands), and from the Spitzer Public UDS survey (3.6-8.0 micron) show that this cluster corresponds to a surface density of galaxies at z ~ 1.6 that is more than 20 sigma above the mean at this redshift. We obtained optical spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the cluster region using IMACS on the Magellan telescope. We measured redshifts for seven galaxies in the range z=1.62-1.63 within 2.8 arcmin (<1.4 Mpc) of the astrometric center of the cluster. A posteriori analysis of the XMM data in this field reveal a weak (4 sigma) detection in the [0.5-2 keV] band compatible with the expected thermal emission from such a cluster. The color-magnitude diagram of the galaxies in this cluster shows a prominent red-sequence, dominated by a population of red galaxies with (z-J) > 1.7 mag. The photometric redshift probability distributions for the red galaxies are strongly peaked at z=1.62, coincident with the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. The rest-frame (U-B) color and scatter of galaxies on the red-sequence are consistent with a mean luminosity-weighted age of 1.2 +/- 0.1 Gyr, yielding a formation redshift z_f = 2.35 +/- 0.10, and corresponding to the last significant star-formation period in these galaxies.
New reverberation mapping measurements of the size of the optical iron emission-line region in quasars are provided, and a tentative size-luminosity relation for this component is reported. Combined with lag measurements in low-luminosity sources, th e results imply an emission-region size that is comparable to and at most twice that of the H$beta$ line, and is characterized by a similar luminosity dependence. This suggests that the physics underlying the formation of the optical iron blends in quasars may be similar to that of other broad emission lines.
