Using a mechanism which allows naturally small Dirac neutrino masses and its linkage to a dark gauge $U(1)_D$ symmetry, a realistic Dirac neutrino mass matrix is derived from $S_3$. The dark sector naturally contains a fermion singlet having a small seesaw mass. It is thus a good candidate for freeze-in dark matter from the decay of the $U(1)_D$ Higgs boson.

In 2006, a simple extension of the Standard Model was proposed in which neutrinos obtain radiative Majorana masses at one-loop level from their couplings with dark matter, hence the term scotogenic, from the Greek scotos meaning darkness. Here an ana logous mechanism for Dirac neutrino masses is discussed in a minimal model. In different ranges of the parameter space, various candidates for dark matter are possible. In particular, the lightest Dirac fermion which appears in the loop diagram generating neutrino mass can be a viable dark matter candidate. Such a possibility does not exist for the Majorana case. Realistic neutrino mixing in the context of $A_4$ is discussed. A possible supersymmetric extension is also briefly discussed.
We investigate whether right-handed neutrinos can play the role of the dark matter of the Universe and be generated by the freeze-out production mechanism. In the standard picture, the requirement of a long lifetime of the right-handed neutrinos impl ies a small neutrino Yukawa coupling. As a consequence, they never reach thermal equilibrium, thus prohibiting production by freeze-out. We note that this limitation is alleviated if the neutrino Yukawa coupling is large enough in the early Universe to thermalize the sterile neutrinos, and then becomes tiny at a certain moment, which makes them drop out of equilibrium. As a concrete example realization of this framework, we consider a Froggatt-Nielsen model supplemented by an additional scalar field which obeys a global symmetry (not the flavour symmetry). Initially, the vacuum expectation value of the flavon is such, that the effective neutrino Yukawa coupling is large and unsuppressed, keeping them in thermal equilibrium. At some point the new scalar also gets a vacuum expectation value that breaks the symmetry. This may occur in such a way that the vev of the flavon is shifted to a new (smaller) value. In that case, the Yukawa coupling is reduced such that the sterile neutrinos are rendered stable on cosmological time scales. We show that this mechanism works for a wide range of sterile neutrino masses.

We investigate a minimal neutrino portal dark matter (DM) model where a right-handed neutrino both generates the observed neutrino masses and mediates between the SM and the dark sector, which consists of a fermion and a boson. In contrast to earlier work, we explore regions of the parameter space where DM is produced via freeze-in instead of freeze-out motivated by the small neutrino Yukawa couplings in case of $mathcal{O} left( mathrm{TeV} right)$ heavy neutrinos. For a non-resonant production of DM, its energy density is independent of the DM mass. Assuming a democratic coupling structure we find $M_N approx 10 , mathrm{TeV}$. For the resonant production of DM, we find that it can be produced via freeze-in or freeze-out even with couplings of $mathcal{O} left( 10^{-5} right)$. However, the measurement of the Lyman-$alpha$ forest rules out the feeble coupled freeze-out case completely, while the resonant freeze-in production is only viable for $m_{DM} gtrsim 3 , mathring{keV}$.
We consider the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism as the one behind the Dirac neutrino masses when these are generated through the $d=5$ effective operator $bar{L}tilde{H}N_Rphi$ at one loop level, with $phi$ being a Standard Model singlet scalar. In this setup, the PQ symmetry guarantees that the one-loop realization of such an effective operator gives the leading contribution to the Dirac neutrino masses by forbidding the contributions arising from its tree level realizations. All the mediators in the one-loop neutrino mass diagrams can be stabilized by a remnant $Z_N$ symmetry from the PQ symmetry breaking, thus forming a dark sector besides the axion sector and leading to mixed axion/WIMP dark matter scenarios.
We carry out diagonalization of a $3times3$ Hermitian matrix of which Real component and Imaginary part are commutative and apply it to Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M=M_ u M_ u^dagger$ which satisfies the same condition. It is shown in a model-inde pendent way for the kind of matrix M of which Real component and Imaginary part are commutative that $delta = pmpi/2$ which implies the maximal strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations. And we obtain the prediction $cos (2theta_{23})=0$ for this kind of M. It is shown that the kind of Hermitian Majorana neutrino mass matrix M has only five real parameters and furthermore, only one free real parameter (D or A) if using the measured values of three mixing angles and mass differences as input.
