A magnetic field parallel to an electrical current does not produce a Lorentz force on the charge carriers. Therefore, orbital longitudinal magnetoresistance is unexpected. Here we report on the observation of a large and non saturating magnetoresistance in lightly doped SrTiO$_{3-x}$ independent of the relative orientation of current and magnetic field. We show that this quasi-isotropic magnetoresistance can be explained if the carrier mobility along all orientations smoothly decreases with magnetic field. This anomalous regime is restricted to low concentrations when the dipolar correlation length is longer than the distance between carriers. We identify cyclotron motion of electrons in a potential landscape tailored by polar domains as the cradle of quasi-isotropic orbital magnetoresistance. The result emerges as a challenge to theory and may be a generic feature of lightly-doped quantum paralectric materials.

Cubic SrTiO$_{3}$ becomes tetragonal below 105 K. The antiferrodistortive (AFD) distortion leads to clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation of adjacent TiO$_{6}$ octahedra. This insulator becomes a metal upon the introduction of extremely low concen tration of n-type dopants. However, signatures of the structural phase transition in charge conduction have remained elusive. Employing the Montgomery technique, we succeed in resolving the anisotropy of charge conductivity induced by the AFD transition, in the presence of different types of dopants. We find that the slight lattice distortion ($<6 times 10^{-4}$) gives rise to a twenty percent anisotropy in charge conductivity, in agreement with the expectations of band calculations. Application of uniaxial strain amplifies the detectable anisotropy by disfavoring one of the three possible tetragonal domains. In contrast with all other known anisotropic Fermi liquids, the anisotropy has opposite signs for elastic and inelastic scattering. Increasing the concentration of dopants leads to a drastic shift in the temperature of the AFD transition either upward or downward. The latter result puts strong constraints on any hypothetical role played by the AFD soft mode in the formation of Cooper pairs and the emergence of superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$.
By combined top- and backgating, we explore the correlation of superconductivity with band filling and electron confinement at the LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ interface. We find that the top- and backgate voltages have distinctly different effects on the sup erconducting critical temperature, implying that the confining potential well has a profound effect on superconductivity. We investigate the origin of this behavior by comparing the gate-dependence of $T_c$ to the corresponding evolution of the band filling with gate voltage. For several backgate voltages, we observe maximum $T_c$ to consistently coincide with a kink in tuning the band filling for high topgate voltage. Self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson calculations relate this kink to a Lifshitz transition of the second $d_{xy}$ subband. These results establish a major role for confinement-induced subbands in the phase diagram of SrTiO$_3$ surface states, and establish gating as a means to control the relative energy of these states.
We show that electron correlations lead to a bad metallic state in chalcogenides FeSe and FeTe despite the intermediate value of the Hubbard repulsion $U$ and Hunds rule coupling $J$. The evolution of the quasi particle weight $Z$ as a function of th e interaction terms reveals a clear crossover at $U simeq$ 2.5 eV. In the weak coupling limit $Z$ decreases for all correlated $d$ orbitals as a function of $U$ and beyond the crossover coupling they become weakly dependent on $U$ while strongly depend on $J$. A marked orbital dependence of the $Z$s emerges even if in general the orbital-selective Mott transition only occurs for relatively large values of $U$. This two-stage reduction of the quasi particle coherence due to the combined effect of Hubbard $U$ and the Hunds $J$, suggests that the iron-based superconductors can be referred to as Hunds correlated metals.
We have investigated the effects of structure change and electron correlation on SrTiO$_{3}$ single crystals using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the cubic to tetragonal phase transition at 105$^circ$K is manifested by a char ge transfer from in-plane ($d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$) bands to out-of-plane ($d_{xy}$) band, which is opposite to the theoretical predictions. Along this second-order phase transition, we find a smooth evolution of the quasiparticle strength and effective masses. The in-plane band exhibits a peak-dip-hump lineshape, indicating a high degree of correlation on a relatively large (170 meV) energy scale, which is attributed to the polaron formation.
The charge and spin of the electrons in solids have been extensively exploited in electronic devices and in the development of spintronics. Another attribute of electrons - their orbital nature - is attracting growing interest for understanding exoti c phenomena and in creating the next-generation of quantum devices such as orbital qubits. Here, we report on orbital-flop induced magnetoresistance anisotropy in CeSb. In the low temperature high magnetic-field driven ferromagnetic state, a series of additional minima appear in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance. These minima arise from the anisotropic magnetization originating from orbital-flops and from the enhanced electron scattering from magnetic multidomains formed around the first-order orbital-flop transition. The measured magnetization anisotropy can be accounted for with a phenomenological model involving orbital-flops and a spin-valve-like structure is used to demonstrate the viable utilization of orbital-flop phenomenon. Our results showcase a contribution of orbital behavior in the emergence of intriguing phenomena.
