In this paper, we consider optimal linear sensor fusion for obtaining a remote state estimate of a linear process based on the sensor data transmitted over lossy channels. There is no local observability guarantee for any of the sensors. It is assumed that the state of the linear process is collectively observable. We transform the problem of finding the optimal linear sensor fusion coefficients as a convex optimization problem which can be efficiently solved. Moreover, the closed-form expression is also derived for the optimal coefficients. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the developed algorithm.

In this paper, we investigate the state estimation problem over multiple Markovian packet drop channels. In this problem setup, a remote estimator receives measurement data transmitted from multiple sensors over individual channels. By the method of Markovian jump linear systems, an optimal stationary estimator that minimizes the error variance in the steady state is obtained, based on the mean-square (MS) stabilizing solution to the coupled algebraic Riccati equations. An explicit necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of the MS stabilizing solution, which coincides with that of the standard Kalman filter. More importantly, we provide a sufficient condition under which the MS detectability with multiple Markovian packet drop channels can be decoupled, and propose a locally optimal stationary estimator but computationally more tractable. Analytic sufficient and necessary MS detectability conditions are presented for the decoupled subsystems subsequently. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the results on the MS stabilizing solution, the MS detectability, and the performance of the optimal and locally optimal stationary estimators.

This work considers the sensor scheduling for multiple dynamic processes. We consider $n$ linear dynamic processes, the state of each process is measured by a sensor, which transmits their local state estimates over wireless channels to a remote esti mator with certain communication costs. In each time step, only a portion of the sensors is allowed to transmit data to the remote estimator and the packet might be lost due to unreliability of the wireless channels. Our goal is to find a scheduling policy which coordinates the sensors in a centralized manner to minimize the total expected estimation error of the remote estimator and the communication costs. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process. We develop an algorithm to check whether there exists a deterministic stationary optimal policy. We show the optimality of monotone policies, which saves computational effort of finding an optimal policy and facilitates practical implementation. Nevertheless, obtaining an exact optimal policy still suffers from curse of dimensionality when the number of processes are large. We further provide an index-based heuristics to avoid brute force computation. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.
We consider a detection problem where sensors experience noisy measurements and intermittent communication opportunities to a centralized fusion center (or cloud). The objective of the problem is to arrive at the correct estimate of event detection i n the environment. The sensors may communicate locally with other sensors (local clusters) where they fuse their noisy sensor data to estimate the detection of an event locally. In addition, each sensor cluster can intermittently communicate to the cloud, where a centralized fusion center fuses estimates from all sensor clusters to make a final determination regarding the occurrence of the event across the deployment area. We refer to this hybrid communication scheme as a cloud-cluster architecture. Minimizing the expected loss function of networks where noisy sensors are intermittently connected to the cloud, as in our hybrid communication scheme, has not been investigated to our knowledge. We leverage recently improved concentration inequalities to arrive at an optimized decision rule for each cluster and we analyze the expected detection performance resulting from our hybrid scheme. Our analysis shows that clustering the sensors provides resilience to noise in the case of low communication probability with the cloud. For larger clusters, a steep improvement in detection performance is possible even for a low communication probability by using our cloud-cluster architecture.
General nonlinear continuous-time systems are considered for which the state is to be estimated via a packet-based communication network. We assume that the system has multiple sensor nodes, affected by measurement noise, which can transmit output da ta at discrete (non-equidistant) and asynchronous points in time. For this general system setup, we develop a state estimation framework, where the transmission instances of the individual sensor nodes can be generated in both time-triggered and event-triggered fashions. In the latter case, we guarantee the absence of Zeno behavior by construction. It is shown that, under the provided design conditions, an input-to-state stability property is obtained for the estimation error and that the state is thus reconstructed asymptotically in the absence of noise. A numerical case study shows the strengths of the developed framework.

By using various sensors to measure the surroundings and sharing local sensor information with the surrounding vehicles through wireless networks, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are expected to increase safety, efficiency, and capacity of ou r transportation systems. However, the increasing usage of sensors has also increased the vulnerability of CAVs to sensor faults and adversarial attacks. Anomalous sensor values resulting from malicious cyberattacks or faulty sensors may cause severe consequences or even fatalities. In this paper, we increase the resilience of CAVs to faults and attacks by using multiple sensors for measuring the same physical variable to create redundancy. We exploit this redundancy and propose a sensor fusion algorithm for providing a robust estimate of the correct sensor information with bounded errors independent of the attack signals, and for attack detection and isolation. The proposed sensor fusion framework is applicable to a large class of security-critical Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). To minimize the performance degradation resulting from the usage of estimation for control, we provide an $H_{infty}$ controller for CACC-equipped CAVs capable of stabilizing the closed-loop dynamics of each vehicle in the platoon while reducing the joint effect of estimation errors and communication channel noise on the tracking performance and string behavior of the vehicle platoon. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.
