In spite of its key role in compact star physics, the surface tension of quark matter is not well comprehended yet. In this work we analyze the behavior of the surface tension of three-flavor quark matter in the outer and inner core of cold deleptonized magnetars, proto magnetars born in core collapse supernovae, and hot magnetars produced in binary neutron stars mergers. We explore the role of temperature, baryon number density, trapped neutrinos, droplet size, and magnetic fields within the multiple reflection expansion formalism. Quark matter is described within the MIT bag model and is assumed to be in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. We discuss some astrophysical consequences of our results.

Short range particle repulsion is rather important property of the hadronic and nuclear matter equations of state. We present a novel equation of state which is based on the virial expansion for the multicomponent mixtures with hard-core repulsion. I n addition to the hard-core repulsion taken into account by the proper volumes of particles, this equation of state explicitly contains the surface tension which is induced by another part of the hard-core repulsion between particles. At high densities the induced surface tension vanishes and the excluded volume treatment of hard-core repulsion is switched to its proper volume treatment. Possible applications of this equation of state to a description of hadronic multiplicities measured in A+A collisions, to an investigation of the nuclear matter phase diagram properties and to the neutron star interior modeling are discussed.

We review the role of the surface tension of quark matter droplets in astrophysical conditions, focusing specifically on the thermodynamic conditions prevailing in cold neutron stars (NSs), in hot lepton rich proto NSs, and in early universe conditio ns. We analyze quark matter in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions, which is relevant for understanding the internal composition of hybrid stars, as well as just deconfined quark matter out of chemical equilibrium, which is the relevant thermodynamic state for describing the nucleation process of quark matter in NSs. We explore the role of temperature, density, trapped neutrinos, droplet size and magnetic fields within the multiple reflection expansion formalism (MRE). Quark matter is described within the frame of different effective models: the MIT bag model and the $SU(3)_f$ Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model (NJL), including color superconductivity, neutrino trapping and magnetic fields. We also analyze the deconfinement transition at vanishing chemical potential and finite temperature including the Polyakov loop. We explore some astrophysical consequences of our results.

The interface effects play important roles for the properties of strange quark matter (SQM) and the related physical processes. We show several examples on the implications of interface effects for both stable and unstable SQM. Based on an equivparti cle model and adopting mean-field approximation (MFA), the surface tension and curvature term of SQM can be obtained, which are increasing monotonically with the density of SQM at zero external pressure. For a parameter set constrained according to the 2$M_odot$ strange star, we find the surface tension is $sim$2.4 MeV/fm${}^2$, while it is larger for other cases.

In the first part of this paper, we investigate the possible existence of a structured hadron-quark mixed phase in the cores of neutron stars. This phase, referred to as the hadron-quark pasta phase, consists of spherical blob, rod, and slab rare pha se geometries. Particular emphasis is given to modeling the size othis phase in rotating neutron stars. We use the relativistic mean-field theory to model hadronic matter and the non-local three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to describe quark matter. Based on these models, the hadron-quark pasta phase exists only in very massive neutron stars, whose rotational frequencies are less than around 300 Hz. All other stars are not dense enough to trigger quark deconfinement in their cores. Part two of the paper deals with the quark-hadron composition of hot (proto) neutron star matter. To this end we use a local three-flavor Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model which includes the t Hooft (quark flavor mixing) term. It is found that this term leads to non-negligible changes in the particle composition of (proto) neutron stars made of hadron-quark matter.
We have studied in the mechanical and chemical instabilities as well as the liquid-gas phase transition in isospin asymmetric quark matter based on the NJL and the pNJL model. Areas of the mechanical instability region and the liquid-gas coexistence region are seen to be enlarged with a larger quark matter symmetry energy or in the presence of strange quarks. Our study shows that the light cluster yield ratio observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions may not be affected much by the uncertainties of the isospin effect, while the hadron-quark phase transition in compact stars as well as their mergers is likely to be a smooth one.
