Many low-energy, particle-physics experiments seek to reveal new fundamental physics by searching for very rare scattering events on atomic nuclei. The interpretation of their results requires quantifying the non-linear effects of the strong interaction on the spin-independent couplings of this new physics to protons and neutrons. Here we present a fully-controlled, ab-initio calculation of these couplings to the quarks within those constituents of nuclei. We use lattice quantum chromodynamics computations for the four lightest species of quarks and heavy-quark expansions for the remaining two. We determine each of the six quark contributions with an accuracy better than 15%. Our results are especially important for guiding and interpreting experimental searches for our universes dark matter.

The existence and stability of atoms rely on the fact that neutrons are more massive than protons. The measured mass difference is only 0.14% of the average of the two masses. A slightly smaller or larger value would have led to a dramatically differ ent universe. Here, we show that this difference results from the competition between electromagnetic and mass isospin breaking effects. We performed lattice quantum-chromodynamics and quantum-electrodynamics computations with four nondegenerate Wilson fermion flavors and computed the neutron-proton mass-splitting with an accuracy of $300$ kilo-electron volts, which is greater than $0$ by $5$ standard deviations. We also determine the splittings in the $Sigma$, $Xi$, $D$ and $Xi_{cc}$ isospin multiplets, exceeding in some cases the precision of experimental measurements.
This document is one of a series of whitepapers from the USQCD collaboration. Here, we discuss opportunities for Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) in the research frontier in fundamental symmetries and signals for new physics. LQCD, in synergy wi th effective field theories and nuclear many-body studies, provides theoretical support to ongoing and planned experimental programs in searches for electric dipole moments of the nucleon, nuclei and atoms, decay of the proton, $n$-$overline{n}$ oscillations, neutrinoless double-$beta$ decay of a nucleus, conversion of muon to electron, precision measurements of weak decays of the nucleon and of nuclei, precision isotope-shift spectroscopy, as well as direct dark matter detection experiments using nuclear targets. This whitepaper details the objectives of the LQCD program in the area of Fundamental Symmetries within the USQCD collaboration, identifies priorities that can be addressed within the next five years, and elaborates on the areas that will likely demand a high degree of innovation in both numerical and analytical frontiers of the LQCD research.
We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of the alpha and beta parameters of the proton decay matrix element. The simulation is carried out using the Wilson quark action at three values of the lattice spacing in the range aapprox 0.1-0.064 fm to study the scaling violation effect. We find only mild scaling violation when the lattice scale is determined by the nucleon mass. We obtain in the continuum limit, |alpha(NDR,2GeV)|=0.0090(09)(^{+5}_{-19})GeV^3 and |beta(NDR,2GeV)|=0.0096(09)(^{+6}_{-20})GeV^3 with alpha and beta in a relatively opposite sign, where the first error is statistical and the second is due to the uncertainty in the determination of the physical scale.
The exact evaluation of the disconnected diagram contributions to the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar meson mass, the nucleon sigma term and the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, is carried out utilizing GPGPU technology with the NVIDIA CUDA platform . The disconnected loops are also computed using stochastic methods with several noise reduction techniques. Various dilution schemes as well as the truncated solver method are studied. We make a comparison of these stochastic techniques to the exact results and show that the number of noise vectors depends on the operator insertion in the fermionic loop.
The determination of scalar lepton and gaugino masses is an important part of the programme of spectroscopic studies of Supersymmetry at a high energy e+e- linear collider. In this article we present results of a study of the processes: e+e- -> eR eR -> e+e- chi0 chi, e+e- -> muR muR -> mu mu- chi0 chi0, e+e- -> eL eL -> e e chi0 chi0 and e+e- -> snu_e snu_e -> e e chi+ chi-in two Supersymmetric benchmark scenarios at 3 TeV and 1.4 TeV at CLIC. We characterize the detector performance, lepton energy resolution and boson mass resolution. We report the accuracy of the production cross section measurements and the eR muR, snu_e, chi+ and chi0 mass determination, estimate the systematic errors affecting the mass measurement and discuss the requirements on the detector time stamping capability and beam polarization. The analysis accounts for the CLIC beam energy spectrum and the dominant beam-induced background. The detector performances are incorporated by full simulation and reconstruction of the events within the framework of the CLIC_ILD_CDR detector concept.
