Given two elements of a vector space acted on by a reductive group, we ask whether they lie in the same orbit, and if not, whether one lies in the orbit closure of the other. We develop techniques to optimize the orbit and orbit closure algorithms and apply these to give a partial classification of orbit closure containments in the case of cubic surfaces with infinitely many singular points, which are known to fall into 13 normal forms. We also discuss the computational obstructions to completing this classification, and discuss tools for future work in this direction.

We explore the connection between the rank of a polynomial and the singularities of its vanishing locus. We first describe the singularity of generic polynomials of fixed rank. We then focus on cubic surfaces. Cubic surfaces with isolated singulariti es are known to fall into 22 singularity types. We compute the rank of a cubic surface of each singularity type. This enables us to find the possible singular loci of a cubic surface of fixed rank. Finally, we study connections to the Hessian discriminant. We show that a cubic surface with singularities that are not ordinary double points lies on the Hessian discriminant, and that the Hessian discriminant is the closure of the rank six cubic surfaces.
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group, H a reductive subgroup of G and X an affine G-variety. Let Y denote the set of fixed points of H in X, and N(H) the normalizer of H in G. In this paper we study the natural map from the quotient of Y by N( H) to the quotient of X by G induced by the inclusion of Y in X. We show that, given G and H, this map is a finite morphism for all G-varieties X if and only if H is G-completely reducible (in the sense defined by J-P. Serre); this was proved in characteristic zero by Luna in the 1970s. We discuss some applications and give a criterion for the map of quotients to be an isomorphism. We show how to extend some other results in Lunas paper to positive characteristic and also prove the following theorem. Let H and K be reductive subgroups of G; then the double coset HgK is closed for generic g in G if and only if the intersection of generic conjugates of H and K is reductive.
Let M_0^R be the moduli space of smooth real cubic surfaces. We show that each of its components admits a real hyperbolic structure. More precisely, one can remove some lower-dimensional geodesic subspaces from a real hyperbolic space H^4 and form th e quotient by an arithmetic group to obtain an orbifold isomorphic to a component of the moduli space. There are five components. For each we describe the corresponding lattices in PO(4,1). We also derive several new and several old results on the topology of M_0^R. Let M_s^R be the moduli space of real cubic surfaces that are stable in the sense of geometric invariant theory. We show that this space carries a hyperbolic structure whose restriction to M_0^R is that just mentioned. The corresponding lattice in PO(4,1), for which we find an explicit fundamental domain, is nonarithmetic.
We determine the Cox rings of the minimal resolutions of cubic surfaces with at most rational double points, of blow ups of the projective plane at non-general configurations of six points and of three dimensional smooth Fano varieties of Picard numbers one and two.
In this paper, we develop a new method to classify abelian automorphism groups of hypersurfaces. We use this method to classify (Theorem 4.2) abelian groups that admit a liftable action on a smooth cubic fourfold. A parallel result (Theorem 5.1) is obtained for quartic surfaces.
