A linear regression algorithm is applied to a digital-supermode distributed Bragg reflector laser to optimise wavelength switching times. The algorithm uses the output of a digital coherent receiver as feedback to update the pre-emphasis weights applied to the laser section currents. This permits in-situ calculation without manual weight adjustments. The application of this optimiser to a representative subsection of channels indicates this commercially available laser can rapidly reconfigure over 6.05 THz, supporting 122 channels, in less than 10 ns.

We experimentally demonstrate a record net capacity per wavelength of 1.23~Tb/s over a single silicon-on-insulator (SOI) multimode waveguide for optical interconnects employing on-chip mode-division multiplexing and 11$times$11 multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) digital signal processing.
The discovery of new mechanisms of controlling magnetic properties by electric fields or currents furthers the fundamental understanding of magnetism and has important implications for practical use. Here, we present a novel approach of utilizing res istive switching to control magnetic anisotropy. We study a ferromagnetic oxide that exhibits an electrically triggered metal-to-insulator phase transition producing a volatile resistive switching. This switching occurs in a characteristic spatial pattern: the formation of a transverse insulating barrier inside a metallic matrix resulting in an unusual ferromagnetic/paramagnetic/ferromagnetic configuration. We found that the formation of this voltage-driven paramagnetic insulating barrier is accompanied by the emergence of a strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that overpowers the intrinsic material anisotropy. Our results demonstrate that resistive switching is an effective tool for manipulating magnetic properties. Because resistive switching can be induced in a very broad range of materials, our findings could enable a new class of voltage-controlled magnetism systems.
We propose a time-multiplexed DS-DBR/SOA-gated system to deliver low-power fast tuning across S-/C-/L-bands. Sub-ns switching is demonstrated, supporting 122$times$50 GHz channels over 6.05 THz using AI techniques.

Inverse design of nanoparticles for desired scattering spectra and dynamic switching between the two opposite scattering anomalies, i.e. superscattering and invisibility, is important in realizing cloaking, sensing and functional devices. However, tr aditionally the design process is quite complicated, which involves complex structures with many choices of synthetic constituents and dispersions. Here, we demonstrate that a well-trained deep-learning neural network can handle these issues efficiently, which can not only forwardly predict scattering spectra of multilayer nanoparticles with high precision, but also inversely design the required structural and material parameters efficiently. Moreover, we show that the neural network is capable of finding out multi-wavelength invisibility-to-superscattering switching points at the desired wavelengths in multilayer nanoparticles composed of metals and phase-change materials. Our work provides a useful solution of deep learning for inverse design of nanoparticles with dynamic scattering spectra by using phase-change materials.
In this work, we propose a novel strategy of adaptive sparse array beamformer design, referred to as regularized complementary antenna switching (RCAS), to swiftly adapt both array configuration and excitation weights in accordance to the dynamic env ironment for enhancing interference suppression. In order to achieve an implementable design of array reconfiguration, the RCAS is conducted in the framework of regularized antenna switching, whereby the full array aperture is collectively divided into separate groups and only one antenna in each group is switched on to connect with the processing channel. A set of deterministic complementary sparse arrays with good quiescent beampatterns is first designed by RCAS and full array data is collected by switching among them while maintaining resilient interference suppression. Subsequently, adaptive sparse array tailored for the specific environment is calculated and reconfigured based on the information extracted from the full array data. The RCAS is devised as an exclusive cardinality-constrained optimization, which is reformulated by introducing an auxiliary variable combined with a piece-wise linear function to approximate the $l_0$-norm function. A regularization formulation is proposed to solve the problem iteratively and eliminate the requirement of feasible initial search point. A rigorous theoretical analysis is conducted, which proves that the proposed algorithm is essentially an equivalent transformation of the original cardinality-constrained optimization. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed RCAS strategy.
