Let $Gamma$ be a lattice in ${rm SL}(n, mathbb R)$ with $ngeq 3$ and $mathcal S$ be a closed surface. Then $Gamma$ has no distal minimal action on $mathcal S$.

We show that joinings of higher rank torus actions on S-arithmetic quotients of semi-simple or perfect algebraic groups must be algebraic.

Let $X$ be a non-degenerate connected compact metric space. If $X$ admits a distal minimal action by a finitely generated amenable group, then the first vCech cohomology group $ {check H}^1(X)$ with integer coefficients is nontrivial. In particular, if $X$ is homotopically equivalent to a CW complex, then $X$ cannot be simply connected.
An important consequence of the theory of entropy of Z-actions is that the events measurable with respect to the far future coincide (modulo null sets) with those measurable with respect to the distant past, and that measuring the entropy using the p ast will give the same value as measuring it using the future. In this paper we show that for measures invariant under multiparameter algebraic actions if the entropy attached to coarse Lyapunov foliations fail to display a stronger symmetry property of a similar type this forces the measure to be invariant under non-trivial unipotent groups. Some consequences of this phenomenon are noted.
Let $BS(1,n) =< a, b | aba^{-1} = b^n >$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where $ ngeq 2$. It is known that BS(1,n) is isomorphic to the group generated by the two affine maps of the real line: $f_0(x) = x + 1$ and $h_0(x) = nx $. This pap er deals with the dynamics of actions of BS(1,n) on closed orientable surfaces. We exhibit a smooth BS(1,n) action without finite orbits on $TT ^2$, we study the dynamical behavior of it and of its $C^1$-pertubations and we prove that it is not locally rigid. We develop a general dynamical study for faithful topological BS(1,n)-actions on closed surfaces $S$. We prove that such actions $<f,h | h circ f circ h^{-1} = f^n>$ admit a minimal set included in $fix(f)$, the set of fixed points of $f$, provided that $fix(f)$ is not empty. When $S= TT^2$, we show that there exists a positive integer $N$, such that $fix(f^N)$ is non-empty and contains a minimal set of the action. As a corollary, we get that there are no minimal faithful topological actions of BS(1,n) on $TT^2$. When the surface $S$ has genus at least 2, is closed and orientable, and $f$ is isotopic to identity, then $fix(f)$ is non empty and contains a minimal set of the action. Moreover if the action is $C^1$ then $fix(f)$ contains any minimal set.

Let G be a subgroup of finite index in SL(n,Z) for N > 4. Suppose G acts continuously on a manifold M, with fundamental group Z^n, preserving a measure that is positive on open sets. Further assume that the induced G action on H^1(M) is non-trivial. We show there exists a finite index subgroup G of G and a G equivariant continuous map from M to the n-torus that induces an isomorphism on fundamental groups. We prove more general results providing continuous quotients in cases where the fundamental group of M surjects onto a finitely generated torsion free nilpotent group. We also give some new examples of manifolds with G actions to which the theorems apply.
