In view of the major advances achieved by the CLAS experiments in studying the N* electroexcitation amplitudes, as well as further extension of these studies in the experiments with CLAS12, we present an approach for the evaluation of the resonant contributions to inclusive electron scattering off protons. For the first time, the resonant contributions are determined from the experimental results on N* electrocouplings available from the data analyses of exclusive meson electroproduction off protons. This is a useful benchmark for future endeavours on understanding the transition region between low and high-energy regions, strongly related to tests on quark-hadron duality.

It is reported on an analysis of electroproduction of light mesons at small Bjorken-x within the handbag approach. The partonic subprocesses, meson electroproduction off quarks or gluons, are calculated within the modified perturbative approach in wh ich quark transverse momenta are retained. The soft hadronic matrix elements, generalized parton distributions, are constructed by means of double distributions. The constraints from parton distributions and sum rules are taken into account. Various moments of these generalized parton distributions are compared to recent results from lattice gauge theories.
Nucleon resonance contributions to the inclusive proton $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions are computed from resonance electroexcitation amplitudes in the mass range up to 1.75 GeV extracted from CLAS exclusive meson electroproduction data. Taking i nto account for the first time quantum interference effects, the resonance contributions are compared with inclusive proton structure functions evaluated from $(e,eX)$ cross section data and the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio. Contributions from isospin-1/2 and 3/2 resonances remain substantial over the entire range of photon virtualities $Q^2 lesssim 4$ GeV$^2$, where their electroexcitation amplitudes have been obtained, and their $Q^2$ evolution displays pronounced differences in the first, second and third resonance regions. We compare the structure functions in the resonance region with those computed from parton distributions fitted to deep-inelastic scattering data, and extrapolated to the resonance region, providing new quantitative assessments of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron-proton scattering.

In this talk various spin effects in hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons are briefly reviewed and the data discussed in the light of recent theoretical calculations within the frame work of the handbag approach. For electroproduction of positi vely charged pions it is shown that there is a strong contribution from photon-pion transitions which can be modeled by the transversity GPD H_T accompanied by the twist-3 pion wave function.
A first measurement of the longitudinal beam spin asymmetry ALU in the semi-inclusive electroproduction of pairs of charged pions is reported. ALU is a higher-twist observable and offers the cleanest access to the nucleon twist-3 parton distribution function e(x). Data have been collected in the Hall-B at Jefferson Lab by impinging a 5.498 GeV electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target, and reconstructing the scattered electron and the pion pair with the CLAS detector. One-dimensional projections of the sin(phiR) moments of ALU are extracted for the kinematic variables of interest in the valence quark region. The understanding of di-hadron production is essential for the interpretation of observables in single hadron production in semi-inclusive DIS, and pioneering measurements of single spin asymmetries in di-hadron production open a new avenue in studies of QCD dynamics.

General expressions for the unpolarized differential cross section and for various polarization observables in the coherent pseudoscalar meson photo- and electroproduction on the deuteron target have been obtained in one-photon-exchange approximation . The spin structure of the matrix element is explicitly derived in terms of structure functions. The correspondence with the helicity amplitudes is given. The polarization effects have been investigated for the case of a longitudinally polarized electron beam and vector or tensor polarized deuteron target. The polarization (vector or tensor) of the scattered deuteron for the case of unpolarized or a longitudinally polarized electron beam is also considered. In the case of the photoproduction reaction, we consider linearly, circularly or elliptically polarized photon beam. Numerical estimations have been done for the unpolarized differential cross section and for some polarization observables.
