Video rain/snow removal from surveillance videos is an important task in the computer vision community since rain/snow existed in videos can severely degenerate the performance of many surveillance system. Various methods have been investigated extensively, but most only consider consistent rain/snow under stable background scenes. Rain/snow captured from practical surveillance camera, however, is always highly dynamic in time with the background scene transformed occasionally. To this issue, this paper proposes a novel rain/snow removal approach, which fully considers dynamic statistics of both rain/snow and background scenes taken from a video sequence. Specifically, the rain/snow is encoded as an online multi-scale convolutional sparse coding (OMS-CSC) model, which not only finely delivers the sparse scattering and multi-scale shapes of real rain/snow, but also well encodes their temporally dynamic configurations by real-time ameliorated parameters in the model. Furthermore, a transformation operator imposed on the background scenes is further embedded into the proposed model, which finely conveys the dynamic background transformations, such as rotations, scalings and distortions, inevitably existed in a real video sequence. The approach so constructed can naturally better adapt to the dynamic rain/snow as well as background changes, and also suitable to deal with the streaming video attributed its online learning mode. The proposed model is formulated in a concise maximum a posterior (MAP) framework and is readily solved by the ADMM algorithm. Compared with the state-of-the-art online and offline video rain/snow removal methods, the proposed method achieves better performance on synthetic and real videos datasets both visually and quantitatively. Specifically, our method can be implemented in relatively high efficiency, showing its potential to real-time video rain/snow removal.

This paper introduces a new benchmarking dataset for marine snow removal of underwater images. Marine snow is one of the main degradation sources of underwater images that are caused by small particles, e.g., organic matter and sand, between the unde rwater scene and photosensors. We mathematically model two typical types of marine snow from the observations of real underwater images. The modeled artifacts are synthesized with underwater images to construct large-scale pairs of ground-truth and degraded images to calculate objective qualities for marine snow removal and to train a deep neural network. We propose two marine snow removal tasks using the dataset and show the first benchmarking results of marine snow removal. The Marine Snow Removal Benchmarking Dataset is publicly available online.
Pansharpening is a fundamental issue in remote sensing field. This paper proposes a side information partially guided convolutional sparse coding (SCSC) model for pansharpening. The key idea is to split the low resolution multispectral image into a p anchromatic image related feature map and a panchromatic image irrelated feature map, where the former one is regularized by the side information from panchromatic images. With the principle of algorithm unrolling techniques, the proposed model is generalized as a deep neural network, called as SCSC pansharpening neural network (SCSC-PNN). Compared with 13 classic and state-of-the-art methods on three satellites, the numerical experiments show that SCSC-PNN is superior to others. The codes are available at https://github.com/xsxjtu/SCSC-PNN.
Video capture is limited by the trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution: when capturing videos of high temporal resolution, the spatial resolution decreases due to bandwidth limitations in the capture system. Achieving both high spatial and temporal resolution is only possible with highly specialized and very expensive hardware, and even then the same basic trade-off remains. The recent introduction of compressive sensing and sparse reconstruction techniques allows for the capture of single-shot high-speed video, by coding the temporal information in a single frame, and then reconstructing the full video sequence from this single coded image and a trained dictionary of image patches. In this paper, we first analyze this approach, and find insights that help improve the quality of the reconstructed videos. We then introduce a novel technique, based on convolutional sparse coding (CSC), and show how it outperforms the state-of-the-art, patch-based approach in terms of flexibility and efficiency, due to the convolutional nature of its filter banks. The key idea for CSC high-speed video acquisition is extending the basic formulation by imposing an additional constraint in the temporal dimension, which enforces sparsity of the first-order derivatives over time.
Rain streak removal is an important issue in outdoor vision systems and has recently been investigated extensively. In this paper, we propose a novel video rain streak removal approach FastDeRain, which fully considers the discriminative characterist ics of rain streaks and the clean video in the gradient domain. Specifically, on the one hand, rain streaks are sparse and smooth along the direction of the raindrops, whereas on the other hand, clean videos exhibit piecewise smoothness along the rain-perpendicular direction and continuity along the temporal direction. Theses smoothness and continuity results in the sparse distribution in the different directional gradient domain, respectively. Thus, we minimize 1) the $ell_1$ norm to enhance the sparsity of the underlying rain streaks, 2) two $ell_1$ norm of unidirectional Total Variation (TV) regularizers to guarantee the anisotropic spatial smoothness, and 3) an $ell_1$ norm of the time-directional difference operator to characterize the temporal continuity. A split augmented Lagrangian shrinkage algorithm (SALSA) based algorithm is designed to solve the proposed minimization model. Experiments conducted on synthetic and real data demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. According to comprehensive quantitative performance measures, our approach outperforms other state-of-the-art methods especially on account of the running time. Tensor data often suffer from missing value problem due to the complex high-dimensional structure while acquiring them. To complete the missing information, lots of Low-Rank Tensor Completion (LRTC) methods have been proposed, most of which depend on the low-rank property of tensor data. In this way, the low-rank component of the original data could be recovered roughly. However, the shortcoming is that the detail information can not be fully restored, no matter the Sum of the Nuclear Norm (SNN) nor the Tensor Nuclear Norm (TNN) based methods. On the contrary, in the field of signal processing, Convolutional Sparse Coding (CSC) can provide a good representation of the high-frequency component of the image, which is generally associated with the detail component of the data. Nevertheless, CSC can not handle the low-frequency component well. To this end, we propose two novel methods, LRTC-CSC-I and LRTC-CSC-II, which adopt CSC as a supplementary regularization for LRTC to capture the high-frequency components. Therefore, the LRTC-CSC methods can not only solve the missing value problem but also recover the details. Moreover, the regularizer CSC can be trained with small samples due to the sparsity characteristic. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of LRTC-CSC methods, and quantitative evaluation indicates that the performance of our models are superior to state-of-the-art methods.
