In analog gravity the recent experiment of Drori {it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 122}, 010404 (2019)] is impressive, as it shows how the emission of two Hawking quanta emitted in opposite directions lead to measurable consequences in the mediums rest system in a straightforward way. This result raises however the following problem: how can this experiment be explained in terms of classical electrodynamics? There must necessarily exist such an explanation (the experiment is after all classical); otherwise classical electrodynamics would be an incomplete theory. This is the main topic of the present paper. We propose that the measured effect is a demonstration of the spacelike character of the Minkowski four-momentum. Moreover, we extend the discussion by analyzing a Gedanken experiment (making use of the Kerr effect as a formal agency), to illustrate the transition from subluminal to superluminal phenomena in a straightforward way. Finally, we emphasize the close relationship that exists between the spacelike Minkowski momentum and the anomalous Doppler effect.

The electrodynamic theory of continuous media is probably the most convenient platform when trying to construct analog gravity theories. Quite naturally, this topic has gained considerable interest. One peculiar but not so very known feature in this context is the unconventional behavior of radiation energy and momentum in cases where superluminal fluid velocities are encountered, what, as known, is a major ingredient in analog gravity theories. These peculiar features are intimately connected with the spacelike character of Minkowskis four-momentum in electrodynamics. Here, we first consider an artificial model in which a Kerr-induced superluminal region is created in the right-hand region ($z>0$) in a left-moving, originally subluminal, fluid. We analyze the behavior of energy density, Poynting vector, and momentum density, and calculate the force on the artificial black hole horizon. Also, we delve into quantal aspects, looking for eventual production of particles associated with the sudden creation of the horizon, finding, however, that no particles are predicted to occur. The present paper continues a previous investigation by the author on the same topic, in Phys. Rev. A {bf 100}, 032109 (2019). The subject as such is closely related to the famous Abraham-Minkowski problem.

To ensure the existence of a well defined linearized gravitational wave equation, we show that the spacetimes in the so-called Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimension have to be locally conformally flat.
We treat a model based upon nonlinear optics for the semiclassical gravitational effects of quantum fields upon light propagation. Our model uses a nonlinear material with a nonzero third order polarizability. Here a probe light pulse satisfies a wav e equation containing the expectation value of the squared electric field. This expectation value depends upon the presence of lower frequency quanta, the background field, and modifies the effective index of refraction, and hence the speed of the probe pulse. If the mean squared electric field is positive, then the pulse is slowed, which is analogous to the gravitational effects of ordinary matter. Such matter satisfies the null energy condition and produce gravitational lensing and time delay. If the mean squared field is negative, then the pulse has a higher speed than in the absence of the background field. This is analogous to the gravitational effects of exotic matter, such as stress tensor expectation values with locally negative energy densities, which lead to repulsive gravitational effects, such as defocussing and time advance. We give some estimates of the magnitude of the effects in our model, and find that they may be large enough to be observable. We also briefly discuss the possibility that the mean squared electric field could be produced by the Casimir vacuum near a reflecting boundary.
In line of the intermediate-term monitoring of seismic activity aimed at prediction of the world largest earthquakes the seismic dynamics of the Earths lithosphere is analysed as a single whole, which is the ultimate scale of the complex hierarchical non-linear system. The present study demonstrates that the lithosphere does behave, at least in intermediate-term scale, as non-linear dynamic system that reveals classical symptoms of instability at the approach of catastrophe, i.e., mega-earthquake. These are: (i) transformation of magnitude distribution, (ii) spatial redistribution of seismic activity, (iii) rise and acceleration of activity, (iv) change of dependencies across magnitudes of different types, and other patterns of collective behaviour. The observed global scale seismic behaviour implies the state of criticality of the Earth lithosphere in the last decade.
Four-dimensional random geometries can be generated by statistical models with rank-4 tensors as random variables. These are dual to discrete building blocks of random geometries. We discover a potential candidate for a continuum limit in such a mode l by employing background-independent coarse-graining techniques where the tensor size serves as a pre-geometric notion of scale. A fixed point candidate which features two relevant directions is found. The possible relevance of this result in view of universal results for quantum gravity and a potential connection to the asymptotic-safety program is discussed.
