Enhancing visual qualities for underexposed images is an extensively concerned task that plays important roles in various areas of multimedia and computer vision. Most existing methods often fail to generate high-quality results with appropriate luminance and abundant details. To address these issues, we in this work develop a novel framework, integrating both knowledge from physical principles and implicit distributions from data to solve the underexposed image correction task. More concretely, we propose a new perspective to formulate this task as an energy-inspired model with advanced hybrid priors. A propagation procedure navigated by the hybrid priors is well designed for simultaneously propagating the reflectance and illumination toward desired results. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the necessity of integrating both underlying principles (i.e., with knowledge) and distributions (i.e., from data) as navigated deep propagation. Plenty of experimental results of underexposed image correction demonstrate that our proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods on both subjective and objective assessments. Additionally, we execute the task of face detection to further verify the naturalness and practical value of underexposed image correction. Whats more, we employ our method to single image haze removal whose experimental results further demonstrate its superiorities.

Natural images tend to mostly consist of smooth regions with individual pixels having highly correlated spectra. This information can be exploited to recover hyperspectral images of natural scenes from their incomplete and noisy measurements. To perf orm the recovery while taking full advantage of the prior knowledge, we formulate a composite cost function containing a square-error data-fitting term and two distinct regularization terms pertaining to spatial and spectral domains. The regularization for the spatial domain is the sum of total-variation of the image frames corresponding to all spectral bands. The regularization for the spectral domain is the l1-norm of the coefficient matrix obtained by applying a suitable sparsifying transform to the spectra of the pixels. We use an accelerated proximal-subgradient method to minimize the formulated cost function. We analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm and prove its convergence. Numerical simulations using real hyperspectral images exhibit that the proposed algorithm offers an excellent recovery performance with a number of measurements that is only a small fraction of the hyperspectral image data size. Simulation results also show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms an accelerated proximal-gradient algorithm that solves the classical basis-pursuit denoising problem to recover the hyperspectral image.

Retinal image quality assessment is an essential prerequisite for diagnosis of retinal diseases. Its goal is to identify retinal images in which anatomic structures and lesions attracting ophthalmologists attention most are exhibited clearly and defi nitely while reject poor quality fundus images. Motivated by this, we mimic the way that ophthalmologists assess the quality of retinal images and propose a method termed SalStructuIQA. First, two salient structures for automated retinal quality assessment. One is the large-size salient structures including optic disc region and exudates in large-size. The other is the tiny-size salient structures which mainly include vessels. Then we incorporate the proposed two salient structure priors with deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to shift the focus of CNN to salient structures. Accordingly, we develop two CNN architectures: Dual-branch SalStructIQA and Single-branch SalStructIQA. Dual-branch SalStructIQA contains two CNN branches and one is guided by large-size salient structures while the other is guided by tiny-size salient structures. Single-branch SalStructIQA contains one CNN branch, which is guided by the concatenation of salient structures in both large-size and tiny-size. Experimental results on Eye-Quality dataset show that our proposed Dual-branch SalStructIQA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for retinal image quality assessment and Single-branch SalStructIQA is much light-weight comparing with state-of-the-art deep retinal image quality assessment methods and still achieves competitive performances.
Image denoising is the process of removing noise from noisy images, which is an image domain transferring task, i.e., from a single or several noise level domains to a photo-realistic domain. In this paper, we propose an effective image denoising met hod by learning two image priors from the perspective of domain alignment. We tackle the domain alignment on two levels. 1) the feature-level prior is to learn domain-invariant features for corrupted images with different level noise; 2) the pixel-level prior is used to push the denoised images to the natural image manifold. The two image priors are based on $mathcal{H}$-divergence theory and implemented by learning classifiers in adversarial training manners. We evaluate our approach on multiple datasets. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for robust image denoising on both synthetic and real-world noisy images. Furthermore, we show that the feature-level prior is capable of alleviating the discrepancy between different level noise. It can be used to improve the blind denoising performance in terms of distortion measures (PSNR and SSIM), while pixel-level prior can effectively improve the perceptual quality to ensure the realistic outputs, which is further validated by subjective evaluation.
Nowadays it is prevalent to take features extracted from pre-trained deep learning models as image representations which have achieved promising classification performance. Existing methods usually consider either object-based features or scene-based features only. However, both types of features are important for complex images like scene images, as they can complement each other. In this paper, we propose a novel type of features -- hybrid deep features, for scene images. Specifically, we exploit both object-based and scene-based features at two levels: part image level (i.e., parts of an image) and whole image level (i.e., a whole image), which produces a total number of four types of deep features. Regarding the part image level, we also propose two new slicing techniques to extract part based features. Finally, we aggregate these four types of deep features via the concatenation operator. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our hybrid deep features on three commonly used scene datasets (MIT-67, Scene-15, and Event-8), in terms of the scene image classification task. Extensive comparisons show that our introduced features can produce state-of-the-art classification accuracies which are more consistent and stable than the results of existing features across all datasets.
Constructing effective image priors is critical to solving ill-posed inverse problems in image processing and imaging. Recent works proposed to exploit image non-local similarity for inverse problems by grouping similar patches and demonstrated state -of-the-art results in many applications. However, compared to classic methods based on filtering or sparsity, most of the non-local algorithms are time-consuming, mainly due to the highly inefficient and redundant block matching step, where the distance between each pair of overlapping patches needs to be computed. In this work, we propose a novel Self-Convolution operator to exploit image non-local similarity in a self-supervised way. The proposed Self-Convolution can generalize the commonly-used block matching step and produce equivalent results with much cheaper computation. Furthermore, by applying Self-Convolution, we propose an effective multi-modality image restoration scheme, which is much more efficient than conventional block matching for non-local modeling. Experimental results demonstrate that (1) Self-Convolution can significantly speed up most of the popular non-local image restoration algorithms, with two-fold to nine-fold faster block matching, and (2) the proposed multi-modality image restoration scheme achieves superior denoising results in both efficiency and effectiveness on RGB-NIR images.
