Passive parity-time-symmetric medium provides a feasible scheme to investigate non-Hermitian systems experimentally. Here, we design a passive PT-symmetric acoustic grating with a period equal to exact PT-symmetric medium. This treatment enhances the diffraction ability of a passive PT-symmetric grating with more compact modulation. Above all, it eliminates the first-order disturbance of previous design in diffraction grating. Additional cavities and small leaked holes on top plate in a 2D waveguide are used to construct a parity-time-symmetric potential. The combining between additional cavities and leaked holes makes it possible to modulate the real and imaginary parts of refractive index simultaneously. When the real and imaginary parts of refractive index are balanced in modulation, asymmetric diffraction can be observed between a pair of oblique incident waves. This demonstration provides a feasible way to construct passive parity-time-symmetric acoustic medium. It opens new possibilities for further investigation of acoustic wave control in non-Hermitian systems.

In PT-symmetric gratings, asymmetric diffraction can be generated by modulating the ratio between imaginary and real refractive indices. In this paper, a rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) has been developed to analyze the diffraction properties o f acoustic PT-symmetric gratings with two kinds of modulating approaches, including modulating the effective modulus and the effective density. Asymmetric diffraction with both Bragg incident angles and perpendicular incident angles is discussed by using the RCWA method. Results show that the modulation ratio for the diffraction vanishing point changes with the modulation amplitude differently for two kinds of modulating approaches. Moreover, the sound energy will be weaken or be enhanced at Bragg incident angles depending on the sign of incident angles and the modulation ratio.

This work presents a theoretical investigation of an active diffraction grating of the Parity-Time (PT) symmetric architecture. The analytical study of the free-space mode propagation in the grating structure indicates the unique bifurcation property due to the PT-symmetry modulation. It is shown that both the gain/loss contrast and the lattice constant parameters are critical factors to modulate the photonic system in between the PT-symmetry to the symmetry-broken phases. Furthermore, numerical simulations via the Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) method discover the existence of a unique Spectral Singularity (SS) phenomenon in this PT grating structure which is corresponding to a non-trivial single-mode and near-zero bandwidth photonic resonant emission. Also, the guiding procedure for fulfilling SS modes is found to be related to the unique formation of the scattering matrix applied in the PT-symmetric diffraction gratings. This theoretical work takes a fresh look into the active PT-symmetric diffraction gratings focusing on the discovery of new free-space emission modes rather than the commonly studied unidirectional properties, which could contribute to the development of novel low-threshold and super-coherent laser devices.
Exceptional points (EPs) associated with a square-root singularity have been found in many non-Hermitian systems. In most of the studies, the EPs found are isotropic meaning that the same singular behavior is obtained independent of the direction fro m which they are approached in the parameter space. In this work, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the existence of an anisotropic EP in an acoustic system that shows different singular behaviors when the anisotropic EP is approached from different directions in the parameter space. Such an anisotropic EP arises from the coalescence of two square-root EPs having the same chirality.
We investigated the acoustic radiation force (ARF) acting on a cylindrical brass particle near an acoustically soft plate patterned with a periodic deep grating. The existence of a negative ARF by which the particle can be pulled towards the sound so urce is confirmed. In addition, the bandwidth for negative ARF in this soft-plate system is found to be considerably broader than in the stiff-plate systems typically used in previous studies. It is further demonstrated by field distribution analysis that the negative ARF is caused by the gradient force induced by the gradient vortex velocity field near the surface, which stems from the collective resonance excitation of the antisymmetric coupling of Scholte surface waves in the thin plate. The effects of particle location and size on the ARF were also investigated in detail. The negative ARF has potential use in applications requiring particle manipulation using acoustic waves.
A Thouless pump can be regarded as a dynamical version of the integer quantum Hall effect. In a finite-size configuration, such topological pump displays edge modes that emerge dynamically from one bulk-band and dive into the opposite bulk-band, an e ffect that can be reproduced with both quantum and classical systems. Here, we report the first un-assisted dynamic energy transfer across a metamaterial, via pumping of such topological edge modes. The system is a topological aperiodic acoustic crystal, with a phason that can be fast and periodically driven in adiabatic cycles. When one edge of the metamaterial is excited in a topological forbidden range of frequencies, a microphone placed at the other edge starts to pick up a signal as soon as the pumping process is set in motion. In contrast, the microphone picks no signal when the forbidden range of frequencies is non-topological.
