We analytically study the electronic structures and optical properties of zigzag-edged black phosphorene nanoribbons (ZPNRs) utilizing the tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian and Kubo formula. By solving the discrete Schordinger equation directly, we obtain the energy spectra and wavefunctions for a $N$-ZPNR with $N$ number of transverse zigzag atomic chains, and classify the eigenstates according to the lattice symmetry. We then obtain the optical transition selection rule of ZPNRs based on the symmetry analysis and the analytical expressions of the optical transition matrix elements. Under an incident light linearly-polarized along the ribbon, importantly, we find that the optical transition selection rule for the $N$-ZPNR with even- or odd-$N$ is qualitatively different. In specification, for even-$N$ ZPNRs the inter- (intra-) band selection rule is $Delta n=$odd (even), since the parity of the wavefunction corresponding to the $n$th subband in the conduction (valence) band is $(-1)^{n}[(-1)^{(n+1)}]$ due to the presence of the $C_{2x}$ symmetry. In contrast, all optical transitions are possible among all subbands due to the absence of the $C_{2x}$ symmetry. Our findings provide a further understanding on the electronic states and optical properties of ZPNRs, which are useful in the explanation of the optical experiment data on ZPNR samples.

We present an analytical tight-binding theory of the optical properties of graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges. Applying the transfer matrix technique to the nearest-neighbor tight-binding Hamiltonian, we derive analytical expressions for electron wave functions and optical transition matrix elements for incident light polarized along the structure axis. It follows from the obtained results that optical selection rules result from the wave function parity factor $(-1)^J$, where $J$ is the band number. These selection rules are that $Delta J$ is odd for transitions between valence and conduction subbands and that $Delta J$ is even for transitions between only valence (conduction) subbands. Although these selection rules are different from those in armchair carbon nanotubes, there is a hidden correlation between absorption spectra of the two structures that should allow one to use them interchangeably in some applications. The correlation originates from the fact that van Hove singularities in the tubes are centered between those in the ribbons if the ribbon width is about a half of the tube circumference. The analysis of the matrix elements dependence on the electron wave vector for narrow ribbons shows a smooth non-singular behavior at the Dirac points and the points where the bulk states meet the edge states.

Black phosphorus is a material with an intrinsic anisotropy in electronic and optical properties due to its puckered honeycomb lattice. Optical absorption is different for incident light with linear polarization in the armchair and zigzag directions (linear dichroism). These directions are also used in the cuts of materials to create black phosphorus nanoribbons. Edges of nanoribbons usually have small reconstruction effects, with minor electronic effects. Here, we show a reconstruction of the armchair edge that introduces a new valence band, which flattens the puckered lattice and increases the linear dichroism extrinsically in the visible spectrum. This enhancement in linear dichroism is explained by the polarization selection rule, which considers the parity of the wave function to a reflection plane. The flattened-edge reconstruction originates from the inversion of chirality of the P atoms at the edges and significantly alters the entire optical absorption of the material. The flattened edges have potential applications in pseudospintronics, photodetectors and might provide new functionalities in optoelectronic and photonic devices.
We examine the magnetic correlations in quantum spin models that were derived recently as effective low-energy theories for electronic correlation effects on the edge states of graphene nanoribbons. For this purpose, we employ quantum Monte Carlo sim ulations to access the large-distance properties, accounting for quantum fluctuations beyond mean-field-theory approaches to edge magnetism. For certain chiral nanoribbons, antiferromagnetic inter-edge couplings were previously found to induce a gapped quantum disordered ground state of the effective spin model. We find that the extended nature of the intra-edge couplings in the effective spin model for zigzag nanoribbons leads to a quantum phase transition at a large, finite value of the inter-edge coupling. This quantum critical point separates the quantum disordered region from a gapless phase of stable edge magnetism at weak intra-edge coupling, which includes the ground states of spin-ladder models for wide zigzag nanoribbons. To study the quantum critical behavior, the effective spin model can be related to a model of two antiferromagnetically coupled Haldane-Shastry spin-half chains with long-ranged ferromagnetic intra-chain couplings. The results for the critical exponents are compared also to several recent renormalization group calculations for related long-ranged interacting quantum systems.
Monolayer (ML) semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent a unique class of two-dimensional (2D) electron systems. Their atomically thin structure -- just like graphene -- facilitates gate-tunability, while the sizable band gap and strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise for properties beyond graphene. Measurements under large magnetic fields have revealed an unusual LL structure, distinct from other 2D electron systems. However, owing to limited sample quality and poor electrical contact, probing the lowest Landau levels (LLs) has been challenging, and observation of electron correlations within the fractionally filled LLs regime has not been possible. Here, through bulk electronic compressibility measurements, we investigate the LL structure of ML WSe$_2$ in the extreme quantum limit, and observe fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the lowest three LLs. The odd-denominator FQH sequences demonstrate a systematic evolution with the LL orbital index, which has not been observed in any other system but is consistent with generic theoretical expectations. In addition, we observe an even-denominator state in the second LL that is expected to host non-Abelian statistics. Our results suggest that the 2D semiconductors can provide an experimental platform that closely resembles idealized theoretical models in the quantum Hall regime.

The universality of $k$-dependent electron-photon and electron-phonon matrix elements is discussed for graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes. An electron undergoes a change in wavevector in the direction of broken translational symmetry, dependin g on the light polarization direction. We suggest that this phenomenon originates from a microscopic feature of chirality.
