We study restriction of logarithmic Higgs bundles to the boundary divisor and we construct the corresponding nearby-cycles functor in positive characteristic. As applications we prove some strong semipositivity theorems for analogs of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures and their generalizations. This implies, e.g., semipositivity for the relative canonical divisor of a semistable reduction in positive characteristic and it gives some new strong results generalizing semipositivity even for complex varieties.

We study the existence of Fuchsian differential equations in positive characteristic with nilpotent p-curvature, and given local invariants. In the case of differential equations with logarithmic local mononodromy, we determine the minimal possible degree of a polynomial solution.
We give a notion of ordinary Enriques surfaces and their canonical lifts in any positive characteristic, and we prove Torelli-type results for this class of Enriques surfaces.

We generalize the basic results of Vinbergs theta-groups, or periodically graded reductive Lie algebras, to fields of good positive characteristic. To this end we clarify the relationship between the little Weyl group and the (standard) Weyl group. W e deduce that the ring of invariants associated to the grading is a polynomial ring. This approach allows us to prove the existence of a KW-section for a classical graded Lie algebra (in zero or good characteristic), confirming a conjecture of Popov in this case.
In this paper, we compute the number of covers of curves with given branch behavior in characteristic p for one class of examples with four branch points and degree p. Our techniques involve related computations in the case of three branch points, an d allow us to conclude in many cases that for a particular choice of degeneration, all the covers we consider degenerate to separable (admissible) covers. Starting from a good understanding of the complex case, the proof is centered on the theory of stable reduction of Galois covers.

In this note we construct examples of covers of the projective line in positive characteristic such that every specialization is inseparable. The result illustrates that it is not possible to construct all covers of the generic r-pointed curve of gen us zero inductively from covers with a smaller number of branch points.
