Event-by-event fluctuations of conserved charges - such as electric charge, strangeness, and baryon number - in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions provide insight into the properties of the quark-gluon plasma and the QCD phase diagram. They can be related to the higher moments of the multiplicity distributions of identified particles, such as the $Lambda$ baryon which carries both strangeness and baryon number and is thus of particular interest. We present the first measurement of net-$Lambda$ fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV as a function of centrality and the pseudorapidity acceptance of the measurement. The results are compared to expectations of the effects of global baryon number conservation as well as to predictions from the HIJING Monte Carlo event generator. In this analysis the Identity Method is applied in a novel way to account for the combinatoric background in the invariant mass distribution.

First results on the measurement of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in central 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented. The charged versus neutral correlations in common phase space regions of var ying azimuthal size are analyzed by two different methods. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and to those from different types of mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions. However, no correlated charge-neutral fluctuations are observed.

The study of formation of heavy quarkonia in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides important insight into the properties of the produced high density QCD medium. Lattice QCD studies show sequential suppression of quarkonia states with increasing temperature; which affirms that a full spectroscopy, can provide us a thermometer for the matter produced under extreme conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions and one of the most direct probes of de-confinement. Muons from the decay of charmonium resonances are detected in ALICE Experiment in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions with a muon spectrometer, covering the forward rapidity region($2.5<y<4$). The analysis of the inclusive J/$psi$ production in the first Pb+Pb data collected in the fall 2010 at a center of mass energy of $sqrt{s_{rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV is discussed. Preliminary results on the nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) and the central to peripheral nuclear modification factor ($R_{CP}$) are presented.
New measurements by the NA49 experiment of the centrality dependence of event-by-event fluctuations of the particle yield ratios (K$^{+}$+K$^{-}$)/($pi^{+}+pi^{-}$), (p+$bar{text p}$)/($pi^{+}+pi^{-}$), and (K$^{+}$+K$^{-}$)/(p+$bar{text p}$) are pre sented for Pb+Pb collisions at 158$A$ GeV. The absolute values of the dynamical fluctuations of these ratios, quantified by the measure $sigma_{text{dyn}}$, increase by about a factor of two from central to semi-peripheral collisions. Multiplicity scaling scenarios are tested and found to apply for both the centrality and the previously published energy dependence of the (K$^{+}$+K$^{-}$)/($pi^{+}+pi^{-}$) and (p+$bar{text p}$)/($pi^{+}+pi^{-}$) ratio fluctuations. A description of the centrality and energy dependence of (K$^{+}$+K$^{-}$)/(p+$bar{text p}$) ratio fluctuations by a common scaling prescription is not possible since there is a sign change in the energy dependence.

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unkn own multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions ($pi$) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure $ u_{text{text{dyn}}}$[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of $ u_{text{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure $sigma_{text{dyn}}$. Moreover, $ u_{text{dyn}}$ was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,$pi$] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.

We present the first results from the ALICE experiment on the nuclear modification factors for heavy-flavour hadron production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=2.76 TeV. Using proton-proton and lead-lead collision samples at sqrt{s}=7 TeV and sqrt{s _NN}=2.76 TeV, respectively, nuclear modification factors R_AA(pt) were measured for D mesons at central rapidity (via displaced decay vertex reconstruction), and for electrons and muons, at central and forward rapidity, respectively.
