Understanding the robustness of topological phases of matter in the presence of interactions poses a difficult challenge in modern condensed matter, showing interesting connections to high energy physics. In this work, we leverage these connections to present a complete analysis of the continuum long-wavelength description of a generic class of correlated topological insulators: Wilson-Hubbard topological matter. We show that a Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) approach, combined with the so-called topological Hamiltonian, provide a quantitative route to understand interaction-induced topological phase transitions that occur in Wilson-Hubbard matter. We benchmark two-loop RG predictions for a quasi-1D Wilson-Hubbard model by means of exhaustive numerical simulations based on matrix product states (MPS). The agreement of the RG predictions with MPS simulations motivates the extension of the RG calculations to higher-dimensional topological insulators.

The realization of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in ultracold fermionic atoms on an optical lattice is a significant achievement. Experiments have been carried out in one, two, and three dimensions, and have also studied anisotropic configurati ons with stronger tunneling in some lattice directions. Such anisotropy is relevant to the physics of cuprate superconductors and other strongly correlated materials. Moreover, this anisotropy might be harnessed to enhance AF order. Here we numerically investigate, using Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo, a simple realization of anisotropy in the 3D Hubbard model in which the tunneling between planes, $t_perp$, is unequal to the intraplane tunneling $t$. This model interpolates between the three-dimensional isotropic ($t_perp = t$) and two-dimensional ($t_perp =0$) systems. We show that at fixed interaction strength to tunneling ratio ($U/t$), anisotropy can enhance the magnetic structure factor relative to both 2D and 3D results. However, this enhancement occurs at interaction strengths below those for which the Neel temperature $T_{rm Nacute{e}el}$ is largest, in such a way that the structure factor cannot be made to exceed its value in isotropic 3D systems at the optimal $U/t$. We characterize the 2D-3D crossover in terms of the magnetic structure factor, real space spin correlations, number of doubly-occupied sites, and thermodynamic observables. An interesting implication of our results stems from the entropys dependence on anisotropy. As the system evolves from 3D to 2D, the entropy at a fixed temperature increases. Correspondingly, at fixed entropy, the temperature will decrease going from 3D to 2D. This suggests a cooling protocol in which the dimensionality is adiabatically changed from 3D to 2D.

We present a non-perturbative renormalization-group approach to the Bose-Hubbard model. By taking as initial condition of the RG flow the (local) limit of decoupled sites, we take into account both local and long-distance fluctuations in a nontrivial way. This approach yields a phase diagram in very good quantitative agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results and reproduces the two universality classes of the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition with a good estimate of the critical exponents. Furthermore, it reveals the crucial role of the Ginzburg length as a crossover length between a weakly- and a strongly-correlated superfluid phase.
We experimentally and numerically investigate the sudden expansion of fermions in a homogeneous one-dimensional optical lattice. For initial states with an appreciable amount of doublons, we observe a dynamical phase separation between rapidly expand ing singlons and slow doublons remaining in the trap center, realizing the key aspect of fermionic quantum distillation in the strongly-interacting limit. For initial states without doublons, we find a reduced interaction dependence of the asymptotic expansion speed compared to bosons, which is explained by the interaction energy produced in the quench.
Topology in quantum many-body systems has profoundly changed our understanding of quantum phases of matter. The paradigmatic model that has played an instrumental role in elucidating these effects is the antiferromagnetic spin-1 Haldane chain. Its gr ound state is a disordered state, with symmetry-protected fourfold-degenerate edge states due to fractional spin excitations. In the bulk, it is characterised by vanishing two-point spin correlations, gapped excitations, and a characteristic non-local order parameter. More recently it was understood that the Haldane chain forms a specific example of a more general classification scheme of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of matter that is based on ideas connecting to quantum information and entanglement. Here, we realise such a topological Haldane phase with Fermi-Hubbard ladders in an ultracold-atom quantum simulator. We directly reveal both edge and bulk properties of the system through the use of single-site and particle-resolved measurements as well as non-local correlation functions. Continuously changing the Hubbard interaction strength of the system allows us to investigate the robustness of the phase to charge (density) fluctuations far from the regime of the Heisenberg model employing a novel correlator.

We present a detailed functional renormalization group analysis of spin-1/2 dipolar Heisenberg model on square lattice. This model is similar to the well known $J_1$-$J_2$ model and describes the pseudospin degrees of freedom of polar molecules confi ned in deep optical lattice with long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. Previous study of this model based on tensor network ansatz indicates a paramagnetic ground state for certain dipole tilting angles which can be tuned in experiments to control the exchange couplings. The tensor ansatz formulated on a small cluster unit cell is inadequate to describe the spiral order, and therefore the phase diagram at high azimuthal tilting angles remains undetermined. Here we obtain the full phase diagram of the model from numerical pseudofermion functional renormalization group calculations. We show that an extended quantum paramagnetic phase is realized between the N{e}el and stripe/spiral phase. In this region, the spin susceptibility flows smoothly down to the lowest numerical renormalization group scales with no sign of divergence or breakdown of the flow, in sharp contrast to the flow towards the long-range ordered phases. Our results provide further evidence that the dipolar Heisenberg model is a fertile ground for quantum spin liquids.
