Current global environmental challenges require vigorous and diverse actions in the energy sector. One solution that has recently attracted interest consists in harnessing high-quality variable renewable energy resources in remote locations, while using transmission links to transport the power to end users. In this context, a comparison of western European and Greenland wind regimes is proposed. By leveraging a regional atmospheric model specifically designed to accurately capture polar phenomena, local climatic features of southern Greenland are identified to be particularly conducive to extensive renewable electricity generation from wind. A methodology to assess how connecting remote locations to major demand centres would benefit the latter from a resource availability standpoint is introduced and applied to the aforementioned Europe-Greenland case study, showing superior and complementary wind generation potential in the considered region of Greenland with respect to selected European sites.

Deep learning techniques for improving fluid flow modelling have gained significant attention in recent years. Advanced deep learning techniques achieve great progress in rapidly predicting fluid flows without prior knowledge of the underlying physic al relationships. Advanced deep learning techniques achieve great progress in rapidly predicting fluid flows without prior knowledge of the underlying physical relationships. However, most of existing researches focused mainly on either sequence learning or spatial learning, rarely on both spatial and temporal dynamics of fluid flows (Reichstein et al., 2019). In this work, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) fluid model based on a general deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) has been developed for predicting spatio-temporal flow distributions. In deep convolutional networks, the high-dimensional flows can be converted into the low-dimensional latent representations. The complex features of flow dynamics can be captured by the adversarial networks. The above DCGAN fluid model enables us to provide reasonable predictive accuracy of flow fields while maintaining a high computational efficiency. The performance of the DCGAN is illustrated for two test cases of Hokkaido tsunami with different incoming waves along the coastal line. It is demonstrated that the results from the DCGAN are comparable with those from the original high fidelity model (Fluidity). The spatio-temporal flow features have been represented as the flow evolves, especially, the wave phases and flow peaks can be captured accurately. In addition, the results illustrate that the online CPU cost is reduced by five orders of magnitude compared to the original high fidelity model simulations. The promising results show that the DCGAN can provide rapid and reliable spatio-temporal prediction for nonlinear fluid flows.
As the COVID-19 virus spread over the world, governments restricted mobility to slow transmission. Public health measures had different intensities across European countries but all had significant impact on peoples daily lives and economic activitie s, causing a drop of CO2 emissions of about 10% for the whole year 2020. Here, we analyze changes in natural gas use in the industry and built environment sectors during the first half of year 2020 with daily gas flows data from pipeline and storage facilities in Europe. We find that reductions of industrial gas use reflect decreases in industrial production across most countries. Surprisingly, natural gas use in buildings also decreased despite most people being confined at home and cold spells in March 2020. Those reductions that we attribute to the impacts of COVID-19 remain of comparable magnitude to previous variations induced by cold or warm climate anomalies in the cold season. We conclude that climate variations played a larger role than COVID-19 induced stay-home orders in natural gas consumption across Europe.
Drought poses a significant threat to the delicate economies in subsaharan Africa. This study investigates the influence of large scale ocean oscillation on drought in West Africa. Standardized Precipitation Index for the region was computed using mo nthly precipitation data from the Climate Research Unit during the period 1961 -1990. The impact of three ocean oscillation indices - Southern Ocean Index (SOI), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on drought over West Africa was investigated using linear correlation, co-integration test, mutual information and nonlinear synchronization methods. SOI showed predominantly positive correlation with drought over the region while PDO and NAO showed negative correlation. This was confirmed by the co-integration tests. The nonlinear test revealed more complex relationship between the indices and drought. PDO has lesser influence or contribute less to the drought in the coastal region compared to the Sahel region of West Africa.
This paper presents a topology optimization approach for surface flows, which can represent the viscous and incompressible fluidic motions at the solid/liquid and liquid/vapor interfaces. The fluidic motions on such material interfaces can be describ ed by the surface Navier-Stokes equations defined on 2-manifolds or two-dimensional manifolds, where the elementary tangential calculus is implemented in terms of exterior differential operators expressed in a Cartesian system. Based on the topology optimization model for fluidic flows with porous medium filling the design domain, an artificial Darcy friction is added to the area force term of the surface Navier-Stokes equations and the physical area forces are penalized to eliminate their existence in the fluidic regions and to avoid the invalidity of the porous medium model. Topology optimization for steady and unsteady surface flows can be implemented by iteratively evolving the impermeability of the porous medium on the 2-manifolds, where the impermeability is interpolated by the material density derived from a design variable. The related partial differential equations are solved by using the surface finite element method. Numerical examples have been provided to demonstrate this topology optimization approach for surface flows, including the boundary velocity driven flows, area force driven flows and convection-diffusion flows.
Radio refractivity, which is the bending of radio signal as it propagates through media, is very important in works involving terrestrial atmospheric electromagnetic propagation such as point-to-point microwave communication, terrestrial radio and te levision broadcast, mobile communication system, and so on. This study has focused on the West African region where it was found that the region has a refractivity which varies exponentially with height and from the coast towards the desert. Generally, refractivity gradient was found to range between -46.48 and -29.51 N-units/km (k-factor value of between 1.23 and 1.42) across the region, splitting the between sub- and super-refraction. The variation in refraction type was found to follow seasonal pattern across the West African region, with sub-refraction dominating during dry season and super-refraction dominating most part in the coastal area during the wet season.
