Here we show that addition of Hf to Nb4Ta can significantly improve the high field performance of Nb$_{3}$Sn, making it suitable for dipole magnets for Future Circular Collider (FCC). A big challenge for the FCC is that a realistic production target for FCC Nb3Sn requires ~30% improvement over current conductor performance. Recent success with internal oxidation(IO) of Nb-Zr precursor has shown significant improvement in the layer J$_{c}$ of Nb$_{3}$Sn wires, albeit the complication of providing an internal O$_{2}$ diffusion path and avoiding degradation of irreversibility field($_{irr}$). We compare Zr and Hf additions to the standard Nb4Ta alloy of maximum H$_{c2}$ and H$_{irr}$. Nb4Ta rods with 1Zr or 1Hf were made into monofilament wires with and without SnO$_{2}$ and their properties measured over the entire superconducting range up to 31 T. We found that group IV alloying of Nb4Ta raises H$_{irr}$, though adding O$_{2}$ still degrades this slightly. As noted in Nb1Zr studies, the pinning force density F$_{p}$ is strongly enhanced and its peak value shifted to higher field by IO. A surprising result of this work is that we found better properties in Nb4Ta1Hf without SnO$_{2}$, F$_{pmax}$ achieving 2.35 times that of the standard Nb4Ta alloy, while the oxidized Nb4Ta1Zr alloy achieved 1.54 times that of the Nb4Ta alloy. The highest layer J$_{c}$ (16 T, 4.2 K) of 3700 A/mm$^{2}$ was found in the SnO$_{2}$-free wire made with Nb4Ta1Hf alloy. Using a standard A15 cross-section fraction of 60% for modern PIT and RRP wires, we estimated that a non-Cu J$_{c}$ of 2200 A/mm$^{2}$ is obtainable in modern conductors, well above the 1500A/mm$^{2}$ FCC specification. Moreover, the best properties were obtained without SnO$_{2}$, the Nb4Ta1Hf alloy appears to open a straightforward route to enhanced properties in Nb$_{3}$Sn wires.

We have investigated the plastic deformation properties of non-equiatomic single phase Zr-Nb-Ti-Ta-Hf high-entropy alloys from room temperature up to 300 {deg}C. Uniaxial deformation tests at a constant strain rate of 10$^{-4}$ s$^{-1}$ were performe d including incremental tests such as stress-relaxations, strain-rate- and temperature changes in order to determine the thermodynamic activation parameters of the deformation process. The microstructure of deformed samples was characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The strength of the investigated Zr-Nb-Ti-Ta-Hf phase is not as high as the values frequently reported for high-entropy alloys in other systems. We find an activation enthalpy of about 1 eV and a stress dependent activation volume between 0.5 and 2 nm$^3$. The measurement of the activation parameters at higher temperatures is affected by structural changes evolving in the material during plastic deformation.
The high frequency vortex motion in Nb$_3$Sn was analyzed in this work up to 12 T. We used a dielectric loaded resonator tuned at 15 GHz to evaluate the surface impedance $Z$ of a Nb$_3$Sn bulk sample (24.8 at.%Sn). From the field induced variation o f $Z$, the high frequency vortex parameters (the pinning constant $k_p$, the depinning frequency $ u_p$ and the flux flow resistivity $rho_{ff}$) were obtained over a large temperature and field range; their field and temperature dependence were analyzed. Comparison with other superconducting materials shows that high frequency applications in strong magnetic fields are also feasible with Nb$_3$Sn. In the present work, we report the first measurements about the microwave response in Nb$_3$Sn in strong magnetic fields.

Nb films containing extended arrays of holes with 45-nm diameter and 100-nm spacing have been fabricated using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) as substrate. Pronounced matching effects in the magnetization and Little-Parks oscillations of the supercond ucting critical temperature have been observed in fields up to 9 kOe. Flux pinning in the patterned samples is enhanced by two orders of magnitude as compared to unpatterned reference samples in applied fields exceeding 5 kOe. Matching effects are a dominant contribution to vortex pinning at temperatures as low as 4.2 K due to the extremely small spacing of the holes.

We study the superconducting density of states and vortex lattice of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). This material has a critical temperature of $T_c= 35,$ K, which is one of the highest among stoichiom etric iron based superconductors (FeBSC) and is comparable to $T_c$ found near optimal doping in other FeBSC. Using quasi-particle interference we identify the hole sheets around the zone center and find that two superconducting gaps open in these sheets. The scattering centers are small defects that can be localized in the surface topography and just produce quasiparticle interference, without suppressing the superconducting order parameter. This shows that sign inversion is not within hole bands, but between hole and the electron bands. Vortex core bound states show electron-hole asymmetric bound states due to proximity of the top of one of the hole bands to the Fermi level $E_F$. This places CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ in a similar situation as FeSe or related materials, with a superconducting gap $Delta$ just a few times smaller than $E_F$. On the other hand, we also identify locations showing strong suppression of the superconducting order parameter. Their size is of order of the vortex core size and vortices are pinned at these locations, leading to a disordered vortex lattice.
Superconducting MgB2 strands with nanometer-scale SiC additions have been investigated systematically using transport and magnetic measurements. A comparative study of MgB2 strands with different nano-SiC addition levels has shown C-doping-enhanced c ritical current density Jc through enhancements in the upper critical field, Hc2, and decreased anisotropy. The critical current density and flux pinning force density obtained from magnetic measurements were found to greatly differ from the values obtained through transport measurements, particularly with regards to magnetic field dependence. The differences in magnetic and transport results are largely attributed to connectivity related effects. On the other hand, based on the scaling behavior of flux pinning force, there may be other effective pinning centers in MgB2 strands in addition to grain boundary pinning.
