Within the paradigm of metamaterials and metasurfaces, electromagnetic properties of composite materials can be engineered by shaping or modulating their constituents, so-called meta-atoms. Synthesis and analysis of complex-shape meta-atoms with general polarization properties is a challenging task. In this paper, we demonstrate that the most general response can be conceptually decomposed into a set of basic, fundamental polarization phenomena, which enables immediate all-direction characterization of electromagnetic properties of arbitrary linear metamaterials and metasurfaces. The proposed platform of modular characterization (called materiatronics) is tested on several examples of bianisotropic and nonreciprocal meta-atoms. As a demonstration of the potential of the modular analysis, we use it to design a single-layer metasurface of vanishing thickness with unitary circular dichroism. The analysis approach developed in this paper is supported by a ready-to-use computational code and can be further extended to meta-atoms engineered for other types of wave interactions, such as acoustics and mechanics.

Molecules composed of atoms exhibit properties not inherent to their constituent atoms. Similarly, meta-molecules consisting of multiple meta-atoms possess emerging features that the meta-atoms themselves do not possess. Metasurfaces composed of meta -molecules with spatially variant building blocks, such as gradient metasurfaces, are drawing substantial attention due to their unconventional controllability of the amplitude, phase, and frequency of light. However, the intricate mechanisms and the large degrees of freedom of the multi-element systems impede an effective strategy for the design and optimization of meta-molecules. Here, we propose a hybrid artificial intelligence-based framework consolidating compositional pattern-producing networks and cooperative coevolution to resolve the inverse design of meta-molecules in metasurfaces. The framework breaks the design of the meta-molecules into separate designs of meta-atoms, and independently solves the smaller design tasks of the meta-atoms through deep learning and evolutionary algorithms. We leverage the proposed framework to design metallic meta-molecules for arbitrary manipulation of the polarization and wavefront of light. Moreover, the efficacy and reliability of the design strategy are confirmed through experimental validations. This framework reveals a promising candidate approach to expedite the design of large-scale metasurfaces in a labor-saving, systematic manner.
Interaction of electromagnetic radiation with time-variant objects is a fundamental problem whose study involves foundational principles of classical electrodynamics. Such study is a necessary preliminary step for delineating the novel research field of linear time-varying metamaterials and metasurfaces. A closer look to the literature, however, reveals that this crucial step has not been addressed and important simplifying assumptions have been made. Before proceeding to studies of linear time-varying metamaterials and metasurfaces with their effective parameters, we need to rigorously describe the electric and magnetic responses of a temporally-modulated meta-atom. Here, we introduce a theoretical model which describes a time-variant meta-atom and its interaction with incident electromagnetic waves in time domain. The developed general approach is specialized for a dipole emitter/scatterer loaded with a time-varying reactive element. We confirm the validity of the theoretical model with full-wave simulations. Our study is of major significance also in the area of nanophotonics and nano-optics because the optical properties of all-dielectric and plasmonic nanoparticles can be varied in time in order to achieve intriguing scattering phenomena.
Metasurface lenses, namely metalenses, are ultrathin planar nanostructures that are capable of manipulating the properties of incoming light and imparting lens-like wavefront to the output. Although they have shown promising potentials for the future miniaturization of optics, the chromatic aberration inherited from their diffractive nature plagues them towards many practical applications. Current solutions for creating achromatic metalenses usually require searching through a large number of meta-atoms to find designs that fulfill not only phase but phase dispersion requirements, which leads to intensive design efforts. Besides, most designs are based on regular-shaped antennas driven by the designers intuition and experience, hence only cover a limited design space. Here, we present an inverse design approach that efficiently produces meta-atoms with unintuitive geometries required for broadband achromatic metalenses. We restricted the generated shapes to hold four-fold reflectional symmetry so that the resulting metalenses are polarization insensitive. In addition, meta-atoms generated by our method inheritably have round edges and corners, which make them nanofabrication-friendly. Our experimental characterization shows that our metalenses exhibit superior performance over a broad bandwidth of 465 nm in the near-infrared regime. Our method offers a fast and efficient way of designing high-performance achromatic metalenses and sheds new insights for unintuitive design of other metaphotonic devices.
Many real-world problems, including multi-speaker text-to-speech synthesis, can greatly benefit from the ability to meta-learn large models with only a few task-specific components. Updating only these task-specific modules then allows the model to b e adapted to low-data tasks for as many steps as necessary without risking overfitting. Unfortunately, existing meta-learning methods either do not scale to long adaptation or else rely on handcrafted task-specific architectures. Here, we propose a meta-learning approach that obviates the need for this often sub-optimal hand-selection. In particular, we develop general techniques based on Bayesian shrinkage to automatically discover and learn both task-specific and general reusable modules. Empirically, we demonstrate that our method discovers a small set of meaningful task-specific modules and outperforms existing meta-learning approaches in domains like few-shot text-to-speech that have little task data and long adaptation horizons. We also show that existing meta-learning methods including MAML, iMAML, and Reptile emerge as special cases of our method.
Metasurfaces have achieved fruitful results in tailoring complexing light fields in free space. However, a systematic investigation on applying the concept of meta-optics to completely control waveguide modes is still elusive. Here we present a compr ehensive catalog capable of selectively and exclusively excite almost arbitrary high-order waveguide modes of interest, leveraging silicon metasurface-patterned silicon nitride waveguides. By simultaneously engineering the phase-matched gradient of the metasurface and the vectorial spatial modal overlap between the nanoantenna near-field and target waveguide mode for excitation, either single or multiple high-order modes are successfully launched with high purity reaching 98% and broad bandwidth over 100 nm. Moreover, on-chip twisted light generators are also theoretically demonstrated with configurable OAM topological charge ell from -3 to +3, serving as a comprehensive framework for metasurface-enabled guided mode optics and motivating further applications such as versatile integrated couplers, demultiplexers, and mode-division multiplexing-based communication systems.
