We explore and exploit the relation between non-planar correlators in ${cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and higher-genus closed string amplitudes in type IIB string theory. By conformal field theory techniques we construct the genus-one, four-point string amplitude in AdS$_5times S^5$ in the low-energy expansion, dual to an ${cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills correlator in the t Hooft limit at order $1/c^2$ in a strong coupling expansion. In the flat space limit, this maps onto the genus-one, four-point scattering amplitude for type II closed strings in ten dimensions. Using this approach we reproduce several results obtained via string perturbation theory. We also demonstrate a novel mechanism to fix subleading terms in the flat space limit of AdS amplitudes by using string/M-theory.

We study non-planar correlators in ${cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills in Mellin space. We focus in the stress tensor four-point correlator to order $1/N^4$ and in a strong coupling expansion. This can be regarded as the genus-one four-point graviton amplit ude of type IIB string theory on $AdS_5 times S^5$ in a low energy expansion. Both the loop supergravity result as well as the tower of stringy corrections have a remarkable simple structure in Mellin space, making manifest important properties such as the correct flat space limit and the structure of UV divergences.
We study string scattering amplitudes by using the deformed cubic string field theory which is equivalent to the string field theory in the proper-time gauge. The four-string scattering amplitudes with three tachyons and an arbitrary string state are calculated. The string field theory yields the string scattering amplitudes evaluated on the world sheet of string scattering whereas the coventional method, based on the first quantized theory brings us the string scattering amplitudes defined on the upper half plane. For the highest spin states, generated by the primary operators, both calculations are in perfect agreement. In this case, the string scattering amplitudes are invariant under the conformal transformation, which maps the string world sheet onto the upper half plane. If the external string states are general massive states, generated by non-primary field operators, we need to take into account carefully the conformal transformation between the world sheet and the upper half plane. We show by an explicit calculation that the string scattering amplitudes calculated by using the deformed cubic string field theory transform into those of the first quantized theory on the upper half plane by the conformal transformation, generated by the Schwarz-Christoffel mapping.
This is an introduction to two-dimensional conformal field theory and its applications in string theory. Modern concepts of conformal field theory are explained, and it is outlined how they are used in recent studies of D-branes in the strong curvatu re regime by means of CFT on surfaces with boundary.
In this paper we show that in perturbative string theory the genus-one contribution to formal 2-point amplitudes can be related to the genus-zero contribution to 4-point amplitudes. This is achieved by studying special linear combinations of multiple zeta values that appear as coefficients of the amplitudes. We also exploit our results to relate closed strings to open strings at genus one using Browns single-valued projection, proving a conjecture of Broedel, Schlotterer and the second author.

We consider $alpha$ corrections to the one-loop four-point correlator of the stress-tensor multiplet in $mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at order $1/N^4$. Holographically, this is dual to string corrections of the one-loop supergravity amplitude on Ad S$_5times$S$^5$. While this correlator has been considered in Mellin space before, we derive the corresponding position space results, gaining new insights into the analytic structure of AdS loop-amplitudes. Most notably, the presence of a transcendental weight three function involving new singularities is required, which has not appeared in the context of AdS amplitudes before. We thereby confirm the structure of string corrected one-loop Mellin amplitudes, and also provide new explicit results at orders in $alpha$ not considered before.
