We study a distributed user association algorithm for a heterogeneous wireless network with the objective of maximizing the sum of the utilities (on the received throughput of wireless users). We consider a state dependent wireless network, where the rate achieved by the users are a function of their user associations as well as the state of the system. We consider three different scenarios depending on the state evolution and the users$text{}$ knowledge of the system state. In this context, we present completely uncoupled user association algorithms for utility maximization where the users$text{}$ association is entirely a function of its past associations and its received throughput. In particular, the user is oblivious to the association of the other users in the network. Using the theory of perturbed Markov chains, we show the optimality of our algorithms under appropriate scenarios.

In this paper, we present two completely uncoupled algorithms for utility maximization. In the first part, we present an algorithm that can be applied for general non-concave utilities. We show that this algorithm induces a perturbed (by $epsilon$) M arkov chain, whose stochastically stable states are the set of actions that maximize the sum utility. In the second part, we present an approximate sub-gradient algorithm for concave utilities which is considerably faster and requires lesser memory. We study the performance of the sub-gradient algorithm for decreasing and fixed step sizes. We show that, for decreasing step sizes, the Cesaro averages of the utilities converges to a neighbourhood of the optimal sum utility. For constant step size, we show that the time average utility converges to a neighbourhood of the optimal sum utility. Our main contribution is the expansion of the achievable rate region, which has been not considered in the prior literature on completely uncoupled algorithms for utility maximization. This expansion aids in allocating a fair share of resources to the nodes which is important in applications like channel selection, user association and power control.

Recent mobile equipment (as well as the norm IEEE 802.21) now offers the possibility for users to switch from one technology to another (vertical handover). This allows flexibility in resource assignments and, consequently, increases the potential th roughput allocated to each user. In this paper, we design a fully distributed algorithm based on trial and error mechanisms that exploits the benefits of vertical handover by finding fair and efficient assignment schemes. On the one hand, mobiles gradually update the fraction of data packets they send to each network based on the rewards they receive from the stations. On the other hand, network stations send rewards to each mobile that represent the impact each mobile has on the cell throughput. This reward function is closely related to the concept of marginal cost in the pricing literature. Both the station and the mobile algorithms are simple enough to be implemented in current standard equipment. Based on tools from evolutionary games, potential games and replicator dynamics, we analytically show the convergence of the algorithm to solutions that are efficient and fair in terms of throughput. Moreover, we show that after convergence, each user is connected to a single network cell which avoids costly repeated vertical handovers. Several simple heuristics based on this algorithm are proposed to achieve fast convergence. Indeed, for implementation purposes, the number of iterations should remain in the order of a few tens. We also compare, for different loads, the quality of their solutions.
Wireless sensor-actuator networks offer flexibility for control design. One novel element which may arise in networks with multiple nodes is that the role of some nodes does not need to be fixed. In particular, there is no need to pre-allocate which nodes assume controller functions and which ones merely relay data. We present a flexible architecture for networked control using multiple nodes connected in series over analog erasure channels without acknowledgments. The control architecture proposed adapts to changes in network conditions, by allowing the role played by individual nodes to depend upon transmission outcomes. We adopt stochastic models for transmission outcomes and characterize the distribution of controller location and the covariance of system states. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed architecture has the potential to give better performance than limiting control calculations to be carried out at a fixed node.
Smart environments interconnect indoor building environments, indoor wireless sensor and actuator networks, smartphones, and human together to provide smart infrastructure management and intelligent user experiences. To enable the smart operations, a complete set of hardware and software components are required. In this work, we present Smart Syndesi, a system for creating indoor location-aware smart building environments using wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs). Smart Syndesi includes an indoor tracking system, a WSAN for indoor environmental monitoring and activation automation, and a gateway interconnecting WSAN, tracking system with mobile users. The indoor positioning system tracks the real-time location of occupants with high accuracy, which works as a basis for indoor location-based sensor actuation automation. To show how the multiple software/hardware components are integrated, we implemented the system prototype and performed intensive experiments in indoor office environments to automate the indoor location-driven environmental sensor monitoring and activation process. The tracked indoor location of a users smartphone triggers the retrieval of environmental measurements and activates the actuators automatically (i.e. turn on/off lights, switch on/off fans) based on the location and correlated environmental sensor information.
This paper explores the potential of wireless power transfer (WPT) in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) aided heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where massive MIMO is applied in the macrocells, and users aim to harvest as much energy as po ssible and reduce the uplink path loss for enhancing their information transfer. By addressing the impact of massive MIMO on the user association, we compare and analyze two user association schemes. We adopt the linear maximal ratio transmission beam-forming for massive MIMO power transfer to recharge users. By deriving new statistical properties, we obtain the exact and asymptotic expressions for the average harvested energy. Then we derive the average uplink achievable rate under the harvested energy constraint.
