A series of 32 green tea leaves samples from different Asian producers were analyzed by direct {gamma}-ray spectrometry at the PRISNA facility in Bordeaux. All the samples contain about 500 Bq/kg of 40K and 10 Bq/kg of 210Pb. As expected, most of the recent Japanese samples contain also the 137Cs and 134Cs radio-isotopes, whose activity distributions are studied as a function of the geographical origin in order to get an insight on the outspread and fallout of radionuclides stemming from the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant incident.

The airborne radioactive isotopes from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plan t was measured in Tokushima, western Japan. The continuous monitoring has been carried out in Tokushima. From March 23, 2011 the fission product $^{131}$I was observed. The rad ioisotopes $^{134}$Cs and $^{137}$Cs were also observed in the beginning of April. However the densities were extremely smaller than the Japanese regulation of radioisotopes.
We report results of air monitoring started due to the recent natural catastrophe on 11 March 2011 in Japan and the severe ensuing damage to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor complex. On 17-18 March 2011, we registered the first arrival of the a irborne fission products 131-I, 132-I, 132-Te, 134-Cs, and 137-Cs in Seattle, WA, USA, by identifying their characteristic gamma rays using a germanium detector. We measured the evolution of the activities over a period of 23 days at the end of which the activities had mostly fallen below our detection limit. The highest detected activity amounted to 4.4 +/- 1.3 mBq/m^3 of 131-I on 19-20 March.
We report the activity measured in rainwater samples collected in the Greater Sudbury area of eastern Canada on 3, 16, 20, and 26 April 2011. The samples were gamma-ray counted in a germanium detector and the isotopes 131I and 137Cs, produced by the fission of 235U, and 134Cs, produced by neutron capture on 133Cs, were observed at elevated levels compared to a reference sample of ice-water. These elevated activities are ascribed to the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor complex in Japan that followed the 11 March earthquake and tsunami. The activity levels observed at no time presented health concerns.
We study the possibility of intrinsic (non-perturbative) charm in parton distribution functions (PDF) of the proton, within the context of the CT10 next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) global analysis. Three models for the intrinsic charm (IC) quark content are compared: (i) $hat{c}(x) = 0$ (zero-IC model); (ii) $hat{c}(x)$ is parametrized by a valence-like parton distribution (BHPS model); (iii) $hat{c}(x)$ is parametrized by a sea-like parton distribution (SEA model). In these models, the intrinsic charm content, $hat{c}(x)$, is included in the charm PDF at the matching scale $Q_c=m_c=1.3$ GeV. The best fits to data are constructed and compared. Correlations between the value of $m_c$ and the amount of IC are also considered.
The output from an eddy-resolved multi-layered circulation model is used to analyze the vertical structure of simulated deep-sea eddies in the Japan Basin of the Japan/East Sea constrained by bottom topography. We focus on Lagrangian analysis of anti cyclonic eddies, generated in the model in a typical year approximately at the place of the mooring and the hydrographic sections, where such eddies have been regularly observed in different years (1993--1997, 1999--2001). Using a quasi-3D computation of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents and displacements for a large number of synthetic tracers in each depth layer, we demonstrate how the simulated feature evolves of the eddy, that does not reach the surface in summer, into a one reaching the surface in fall. This finding is confirmed by computing deformation of the model layers across the simulated eddy in zonal and meridional directions and in the corresponding temperature cross sections. Computed Lagrangian tracking maps allow to trace the origin and fate of water masses in different layers of the eddy. The results of simulation are compared with observed temperature zonal and meridional cross sections of a real anticyclonic eddy to be studied at that place during the oceanographic Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) hydrochemical survey in summer 1999. Both the simulated and observed eddies are shown to have the similar eddy core and the relief of layer interfaces and isotherms.
