We construct two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories with orthogonal and symplectic groups using branes and orientifold planes in Type IIA string theory. A number of puzzles regarding the construction, including the effect of exchanging NS5-branes on an orientifold 2-plane, are resolved by lifting the configurations to M theory. The low energy properties and conjectured dualities of these theories are reproduced in the M-brane description. A similar construction of N=(4,4) theories with orthogonal and symplectic groups leads to new duality conjectures for these theories.

We discuss fractional D3-branes on the orbifold C^3/Z_2*Z_2. We study the open and the closed string spectrum on this orbifold. The corresponding N=1 theory on the brane has, generically, a U(N_1)*U(N_2)*U(N_3)*U(N_4) gauge group with matter in the b ifundamental. In particular, when only one type of brane is present, one obtains pure N=1 Yang-Mills. We study the coupling of the branes to the bulk fields and present the corresponding supergravity solution, valid at large distances. By using a probe analysis, we are able to obtain the Wilsonian beta-function for those gauge theories that possess some chiral multiplet. Although, due to the lack of moduli, the probe technique is not directly applicable to the case of pure N=1 Yang-Mills, we point out that the same formula gives the correct result also for this case.
We analyse the Seiberg Witten curve describing the N=2 gauge theory dual to the supergravity solution with fractional branes. Emphasis is given to those aspects that are related to stringy mechanism known as the enhancon. We also compare our results with the features of the supergravity duals, which have been variously interpreted in the literature. Known aspects of the N=2 gauge theories seem to agree with the supergravity solution, whenever the two theories can be faithfully compared.

We recently conjectured a set of dualities relating two-dimensional orthogonal gauge theories with $mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry, analogous to Horis dualities with $mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry. Here we provide a quantitative test of this conje cture by computing the elliptic genera of the dual pairs and showing that they agree. The elliptic genus of orthogonal gauge theories has multiple topological sectors that depend on the global structure of the group and on the value of a discrete $theta$ parameter. We derive the dependence on the $theta$ parameter by determining whether a given sector has $(S)Pin$ structure or not.
In this paper we present a beautifully consistent web of evidence for the existence of interacting 4d rank-1 $mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs obtained from gauging discrete subgroups of global symmetries of other existing 4d rank-1 $mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. The glob al symmetries that can be gauged involve a non-trivial combination of discrete subgroups of the $U(1)_R$, low-energy EM duality group $SL(2,mathbb{Z})$, and the outer automorphism group of the flavor symmetry algebra, Out($F$). The theories that we construct are remarkable in many ways: (i) two of them have exceptional $F_4$ and $G_2$ flavor groups; (ii) they substantially complete the picture of the landscape of rank-1 $mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs as they realize all but one of the remaining consistent rank-1 Seiberg-Witten geometries that we previously constructed but were not associated to known SCFTs; and (iii) some of them have enlarged $mathcal{N}=3$ SUSY, and have not been previously constructed. They are also examples of SCFTs which violate the Shapere-Tachikawa relation between the conformal central charges and the scaling dimension of the Coulomb branch vev. We propose a modification of the formulas computing these central charges from the topologically twisted Coulomb branch partition function which correctly compute them for discretely gauged theories.

We discuss the modular anomaly equation satisfied by the the prepotential of 4-dimensional N=2* theories and show that its validity is related to S-duality. The recursion relations that follow from the modular anomaly equation allow one to write the prepotential in terms of (quasi)-modular forms, thus resumming the instanton contributions. These results can be checked against the microscopic multi-instanton calculus in the case of classical algebras, but are valid also for the exceptional E6, E7, E8, F4 and G2 algebras, where direct computations are not available.
