We consider the extended Hubbard model and introduce a corresponding Heisenberg-like problem written in terms of spin operators. The derived formalism is reminiscent of Andersons idea of the effective exchange interaction and takes into account nonlocal correlation effects. The results for the exchange interaction and magnetic susceptibility are expressed in terms of single-particle quantities, which can be obtained efficiently in realistic calculations of multiband systems. In the strongly spin-polarized limit, when the local magnetic moment is well-defined, the exchange interaction reduces to a standard expression of the density functional theory that has been successfully used in practical calculations of magnetic properties of real materials.

Collective electronic fluctuations in correlated materials give rise to various important phenomena, such as existence of the charge ordering, superconductivity, Mott insulating and magnetic phases, plasmon and magnon modes, and other interesting fea tures of such systems. Unfortunately, description of these correlation effects requires significant efforts, since they almost entirely rely on strong local and nonlocal electron-electron interactions. Some collective phenomena, such as magnetism, can be sufficiently described by a simple Heisenberg-like models that are formulated in terms of bosonic variables. This fact suggests that other many-body excitations can also be described by simple bosonic models in spirit of the Heisenberg theory. Here we derive an effective bosonic action for charge degrees of freedom for the extended Hubbard model and define a physical regime where the obtained action reduces to a classical Hamiltonian of an effective Ising model.

We present a robust scheme to derive effective models non-perturbatively for quantum lattice models when at least one degree of freedom is gapped. A combination of graph theory and the method of continuous unitary transformations (gCUTs) is shown to efficiently capture all zero-temperature fluctuations in a controlled spatial range. The gCUT can be used either for effective quasi-particle descriptions or for effective low-energy descriptions in case of infinitely degenerate subspaces. We illustrate the method for 1d and 2d lattice models yielding convincing results in the thermodynamic limit. We find that the recently discovered spin liquid in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice lies outside the perturbative strong-coupling regime. Various extensions and perspectives of the gCUT are discussed.
We discuss the problem of a possible violation of the optical sum rule in the normal (non superconducting) state of strongly correlated electronic systems, using our recently proposed DMFT+Sigma approach, applied to two typical models: the hot - spot model of the pseudogap state and disordered Anderson - Hubbard model. We explicitly demonstrate that the general Kubo single band sum rule is satisfied for both models. However, the optical integral itself is in general dependent on temperature and characteristic parameters, such as pseudogap width, correlation strength and disorder scattering, leading to effective violation of the optical sum rule, which may be observed in the experiments.

We present the ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project, an international open source software project to develop libraries and application programs for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum lattice models such as quant um magnets, lattice bosons, and strongly correlated fermion systems. Development is centered on common XML and binary data formats, on libraries to simplify and speed up code development, and on full-featured simulation programs. The programs enable non-experts to start carrying out numerical simulations by providing basic implementations of the important algorithms for quantum lattice models: classical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) using non-local updates, extended ensemble simulations, exact and full diagonalization (ED), as well as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The software is available from our web server at http://alps.comp-phys.org.
We formulate a low-energy theory for the magnetic interactions between electrons in the multi-band Hubbard model under non-equilibrium conditions determined by an external time-dependent electric field which simulates laser-induced spin dynamics. We derive expressions for dynamical exchange parameters in terms of non-equilibrium electronic Green functions and self-energies, which can be computed, e.g., with the methods of time-dependent dynamical mean-field theory. Moreover, we find that a correct description of the system requires, in addition to exchange, a new kind of magnetic interaction, that we name twist exchange, which formally resembles Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling, but is not due to spin-orbit, and is actually due to an effective three-spin interaction. Our theory allows the evaluation of the related time-dependent parameters as well.
