Motivated by experimental advances on ultracold atoms coupled to a pumped optical cavity, we propose a scheme for synthesizing and observing the Kondo insulator in Fermi gases trapped in optical lattices. The synthetic Kondo phase arises from the screening of localized atoms coupled to mobile ones, which in our proposal is generated via the pumping laser as well as the cavity. By designing the atom-cavity coupling, it can engineer a nearest-neighbor-site Kondo coupling that plays an essential role for supporting topological Kondo phase. Therefore, the cavity-induced Kondo transition is associated with a nontrivial topological features, resulting in the coexistence of the superradiant and topological Kondo state. Our proposal can be realized with current technique, and thus has potential applications in quantum simulation of the topological Kondo insulator in ultracold atoms.

Following the experimental realization of Dicke superradiance in Bose gases coupled to cavity light fields, we investigate the behavior of ultra cold fermions in a transversely pumped cavity. We focus on the equilibrium phase diagram of spinless ferm ions coupled to a single cavity mode and establish a zero temperature transition to a superradiant state. In contrast to the bosonic case, Pauli blocking leads to lattice commensuration effects that influence self-organization in the cavity light field. This includes a sequence of discontinuous transitions with increasing atomic density and tricritical superradiance. We discuss the implications for experiment.

We investigate the quantum measurement noise effects on the dynamics of an atomic Bose lattice gas inside an optical resonator. We describe the dynamics by means of a hybrid model consisting of a Bose--Hubbard Hamiltonian for the atoms and a Heisenbe rg--Langevin equation for the lossy cavity field mode. We assume that the atoms are prepared initially in the ground state of the lattice Hamiltonian and then start to interact with the cavity mode. We show that the cavity field fluctuations originating from the dissipative outcoupling of photons from the resonator lead to vastly different effects in the different possible ground state phases, i.e., the superfluid, the supersolid, the Mott- and the charge-density-wave phases. In the former two phases with the presence of a superfluid wavefunction, the quantum measurement noise appears as a driving term leading to excess noise depletion of the ground state. The time scale for the system to leave the ground scale is determined analytically. For the latter two incompressible phases, the quantum noise results in the fluctuation of the chemical potential. We derive an analytical expression for the corresponding broadening of the quasiparticle resonances.
We propose a simple method to simulate and detect topological insulators with cold atoms trapped in a one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattice subjected to a time-periodic modulation. The tight-binding form of this shaken system is equivalent to t he periodically driven Aubry-Andre model. We demonstrate that this model can be mapped into a two-dimensional Chern insulator model, whose energy spectrum hosts a topological phase within an experimentally accessible parameter regime. By tuning the laser phase adiabatically, such one-dimensional system constitutes a natural platform to realize topological particle pumping. We show that the Chern number characterizing the topological features of this system can be measured by detecting the density shift after one cycle of pumping.
We propose the creation of an atomic analogue of electronic snake states in which electrons move along one-dimensional snake-like trajectory in the presence of a suitable magnetic field gradient. To this purpose, we propose the creation of laser indu ced synthetic gauge field inside a three-mirror ring cavity and show that under appropriate conditions, the atomic trajectory in such configuration mimics snake-state like motion. We analyse this motion using semi-classical and full quantum mechanical techniques for a single atom. We provide a detailed comparison of the original electronic phenomena and its atomic analogue in terms of relevant energy and length scales and conclude by briefly pointing out the possibility of consequent study of ultra cold condensate in similar ring-cavity configuration.
We observe vacuum Rabi splitting in a lossy nearly confocal cavity indicating the strong coupling regime, despite a weak single-atom single-mode coupling. Strong collective interaction manifests itself in the typical $sqrt{N}$-dependence of the norma l mode splitting on the number of atoms $N$. The $TEM_{00}$-mode coupling parameters are $(g,kappa,gamma)=2pitimes(0.12,0.8,2.6)$ MHz and up to $(1.33pm 0.08)times10^5$ cesium atoms were loaded into the mode volume.
