Floating potential of emitting surfaces in plasmas with respect to the space potential

The potential difference between a floating emitting surface and the plasma surrounding it has been described by several sheath models, including the space-charge-limited sheath, the electron sheath with high emission current, and the inverse sheath produced by charge-exchange ion trapping. Our measurements reveal that each of these models has its own regime of validity. We determine the potential of an emissive filament relative to the plasma potential, emphasizing variations in emitted current density and neutral particle density. The potential of a filament in a diffuse plasma is first shown to vanish, consistent with the electron sheath model and increasing electron emission. In a denser plasma with ample neutral pressure, the floating filament potential is positive, as predicted by a derived ion trapping condition. Lastly, the filament floated negatively in a third plasma, where flowing ions and electrons and nonnegligible electric fields may have disrupted ion trapping. Depending on the regime chosen, emitting surfaces can float positively or negatively with respect to the plasma potential.

Avoiding impurity accumulation is a requirement for steady-state stellarator operation. The accumulation of impurities can be heavily affected by variations in their density on the flux-surface. Using recently derived semi-analytic expressions for th e transport of a collisional impurity species with high-$Z$ and flux-surface density-variation in the presence of a low-collisionality bulk ion species, we numerically optimize the impurity density-variation on the flux-surface to minimize the radial peaking factor of the impurities. These optimized density-variations can reduce the core impurity density by $0.75^Z$ (with $Z$ the impurity charge number) in the Large Helical Device case considered here, and by $0.89^Z$ in a Wendelstein 7-X standard configuration case. On the other hand, when the same procedure is used to find density-variations that maximize the peaking factor, it is notably increased compared to the case with no density-variation. This highlights the potential importance of measuring and controlling these variations in experiments.
An experimental investigation on the periodic and chaotic oscillations in a reflex plasma source in presence of magnetic field is presented. The experiment is conducted in a reflex plasma source, consisting of two cathodes and a ring anode. A penning type DC glow discharge in an uniform axial magnetic field is initiated in the background of argon gas. The current-voltage characteristics near the breakdown voltage show a hysteresis with two distinct discharge current regimes. The effect of magnetic field on the discharge current and floating potential oscillations is studied when the discharge is operated within this hysteresis loop. At a typical axial magnetic field, the discharge transits from high discharge current regime (beyond 4-5 mA), an oscillation free regime, to a low discharge current regime (less than 1 mA). Depending upon the discharge parameters, low discharge current regime shows either the periodic or chaotic oscillation in the frequency range of 1-50 KHz. The frequency of periodic oscillation increases with the increase in magnetic field up to 90 Gauss and with further increase in magnetic field, the periodic oscillation becomes chaotic in nature.
Macroscopic simulations of dense plasmas rely on detailed microscopic information that can be computationally expensive and is difficult to verify experimentally. In this work, we delineate the accuracy boundary between microscale simulation methods by comparing Kohn-Sham density functional theory molecular dynamics (KS-MD) and radial pair potential molecular dynamics (RPP- MD) for a range of elements, temperature, and density. By extracting the optimal RPP from KS-MD data using force-matching, we constrain its functional form and dismiss classes of potentials that assume a constant power law for small interparticle distances. Our results show excellent agreement between RPP-MD and KS-MD for multiple metrics of accuracy at temperatures of only a few electron volts. The use of RPPs offers orders of magnitude decrease in computational cost and indicates that three-body potentials are not required beyond temperatures of a few eV. Due to its efficiency, the validated RPP-MD provides an avenue for reducing errors due to finite-size effects that can be on the order of $sim20%$.

In order to produce intrinsic rotation, bulk plasmas must be collectively accelerated by the net force exerted on them, which results from both driving and damping forces. So, to study the possible mechanisms of intrinsic rotation generation, it is o nly needed to understand characteristics of driving and damping terms because the toroidal driving and damping forces induce net acceleration which generates intrinsic rotation. Experiments were performed on EAST and J-TEXT for ohmic plasmas with net counter- and co-current toroidal acceleration generated by density ramping up and ramping down. Additionally on EAST, net co-current toroidal acceleration was also formed by LHCD or ICRF. For the current experimental results, toroidal acceleration was between - 50 km/s^2 in counter-current direction and 70 km/s^2 in co-current direction. According to toroidal momentum equation, toroidal electric field (E-(g(f))), electron-ion toroidal friction, and toroidal viscous force etc. may play roles in the evolution of toroidal rotation. To evaluate contribution of each term, we first analyze characteristics of E-(g(f)). E-(g(f)) is one of the co-current toroidal forces that acts on the plasma as a whole and persists for the entire discharge period. It was shown to drive the co-current toroidal acceleration at a magnitude of 10^3 km/s^2, which was much larger than the experimental toroidal acceleration observed on EAST and J-TEXT. So E-(g(f)) is one of co-current forces producing cocurrent intrinsic toroidal acceleration and rotation. Meanwhile, it indicates that there must be a strong counter-current toroidal acceleration resulting from counter-current toroidal forces. Electron-ion toroidal friction is one of the counter-current toroidal forces because global electrons move in the counter-current direction in order to produce a toroidal plasma current.
In the present work we report recent radial electric field measurements carried out with the Doppler reflectometry system in the TJ-II stellarator. The study focuses on the fact that, under some conditions, the radial electric field measured at diffe rent points over the same flux surface shows significantly different values. A numerical analysis is carried out considering the contribution arising from the radial dependence of $Phi_1$ as a possible correction term to the total radial electric field. Here $Phi_1$ is the neoclassical electrostatic potential variation over the surface. The comparison shows good agreement in some aspects, like the conditions under which this correction is large (electron-root conditions) or negligible (ion-root conditions). But it disagrees in others like the sign of the correction. The results are discussed together with the underlying reasons of this partial disagreement. In addition, motivated by the recent installation of the dual Doppler reflectometry system in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), $Phi_1$ estimations for W7-X are revisited considering Core-Electron-Root-Plasma (CERC) plasmas from its first experimental campaign. The simulations show larger values of $Phi_1$ under electron-root conditions than under ion root ones. The contribution from the kinetic electron response is shown to become important at some radii. All this results in a potential variation size noticeably larger than estimated in our previous work in W7-X cite{Regana_nf_57_056004_2017} for other plasma parameters and another configuration.
