We study the one-electron spectral properties of one-dimensional interacting electron systems in which the interactions have finite range. We employ a mobile quantum impurity scheme that describes the interactions of the fractionalized excitations at energies above the standard Tomonga-Luttinger liquid limit and show that the phase shifts induced by the impurity describe universal properties of the one-particle spectral function. We find the explicit forms in terms of these phase shifts for the momentum dependent exponents that control the behavior of the spectral function near and at the (k,omega)-plane singularities where most of the spectral weight is located. The universality arises because the line shape near the singularities is independent of the short-distance part of the interaction potentials. For the class of potentials considered here, the charge fractionalized particles have screened Coulomb interactions that decay with a power-law exponent l>5. We apply the theory to the angle-resolved photo-electron spectroscopy (ARPES) in the highly one-dimensional bismuth-induced anisotropic structure on indium antimonide Bi/InSb(001). Our theoretical predictions agree quantitatively with both (i) the experimental value found in Bi/InSb(001) for the exponent alpha that controls the suppression of the density of states at very small excitation energy omega and (ii) the location in the (k,omega) plane of the experimentally observed high-energy peaks in the ARPES momentum and energy distributions. We conclude with a discussion of experimental properties beyond the range of our present theoretical framework and further open questions regarding the one-electron spectral properties of Bi/InSb(001).

The Hubbard-Holstein model describes fermions on a discrete lattice, with on-site repulsion between fermions and a coupling to phonons that are localized on sites. Generally, at half-filling, increasing the coupling $g$ to the phonons drives the syst em towards a Peierls charge density wave state whereas increasing the electron-electron interaction $U$ drives the fermions into a Mott antiferromagnet. At low $g$ and $U$, or when doped, the system is metallic. In one-dimension, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the case where fermions have a long range coupling to phonons, with characteristic range $xi$, interpolating between the Holstein and Frohlich limits. Without electron-electron interaction, the fermions adopt a Peierls state when the coupling to the phonons is strong enough. This state is destabilized by a small coupling range $xi$, and leads to a collapse of the fermions, and, consequently, phase separation. Increasing interaction $U$ will drive any of these three phases (metallic, Peierls, phase separation) into a Mott insulator phase. The phase separation region is once again present in the $U e 0$ case, even for small values of the coupling range.
We study finite-temperature transport properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model using the density matrix renormalization group. Our aim is two-fold: First, we compute both the charge and the spin current correlation function of the integrable m odel at half filling. The former decays rapidly, implying that the corresponding Drude weight is either zero or very small. Second, we calculate the optical charge conductivity sigma(omega) in presence of small integrability-breaking next-nearest neighbor interactions (the extended Hubbard model). The DC conductivity is finite and diverges as the temperature is decreased below the gap. Our results thus suggest that the half-filled, gapped Hubbard model is a normal charge conductor at finite temperatures. As a testbed for our numerics, we compute sigma(omega) for the integrable XXZ spin chain in its gapped phase.
We have studied the energy spectrum of a one-dimensional Kondo lattice, where the localized magnetic moments have SU(N) symmetry and two channels of conduction electrons are present. At half filling, the system is shown to exist in two phases: one do minated by RKKY-exchange interaction effects, and the other by Kondo screening. A quantum phase transition point separates these two regimes at temperature $T = 0$. The Kondo-dominated phase is shown to possess soft modes, with spectral gaps much smaller than the Kondo temperature.
We present a functional renormalization group calculation of the effect of strong interactions on the shape of the Fermi surface of weakly coupled metallic chains. In the regime where the bare interchain hopping is small, we show that scattering proc esses involving large momentum transfers perpendicular to the chains can completely destroy the warping of the true Fermi surface, leading to a confined state where the renormalized interchain hopping vanishes and a coherent motion perpendicular to the chains is impossible.

We study the two-impurity Anderson model on finite chains using numerical techniques. We discuss the departure of magnetic correlations as a function of the interimpurity distance from a pure 2k_F oscillation due to open boundary conditions. We obser ve qualitatively different behaviors in the interimpurity spin correlations and in transport properties at different values of the impurity couplings. We relate these different behaviors to a change in the relative dominance between the Kondo effect and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction. We also observe that when RKKY dominates there is a definite relation between interimpurity magnetic correlations and transport properties. In this case, there is a recovery of 2k_F periodicity when the on-site Coulomb repulsion on the chain is increased at quarter-filling. The present results could be relevant for electronic nanodevices implementing a non-local control between two quantum dots that could be located at variable distance along a wire.
