In this paper, we propose a multimodal search engine that combines visual and textual cues to retrieve items from a multimedia database aesthetically similar to the query. The goal of our engine is to enable intuitive retrieval of fashion merchandise such as clothes or furniture. Existing search engines treat textual input only as an additional source of information about the query image and do not correspond to the real-life scenario where the user looks for the same shirt but of denim. Our novel method, dubbed DeepStyle, mitigates those shortcomings by using a joint neural network architecture to model contextual dependencies between features of different modalities. We prove the robustness of this approach on two different challenging datasets of fashion items and furniture where our DeepStyle engine outperforms baseline methods by 18-21% on the tested datasets. Our search engine is commercially deployed and available through a Web-based application.

In this paper, we propose a multi-modal search engine for interior design that combines visual and textual queries. The goal of our engine is to retrieve interior objects, e.g. furniture or wall clocks, that share visual and aesthetic similarities wi th the query. Our search engine allows the user to take a photo of a room and retrieve with a high recall a list of items identical or visually similar to those present in the photo. Additionally, it allows to return other items that aesthetically and stylistically fit well together. To achieve this goal, our system blends the results obtained using textual and visual modalities. Thanks to this blending strategy, we increase the average style similarity score of the retrieved items by 11%. Our work is implemented as a Web-based application and it is planned to be opened to the public.
We build a large-scale visual search system which finds similar product images given a fashion item. Defining similarity among arbitrary fashion-products is still remains a challenging problem, even there is no exact ground-truth. To resolve this pro blem, we define more than 90 fashion-related attributes, and combination of these attributes can represent thousands of unique fashion-styles. The fashion-attributes are one of the ingredients to define semantic similarity among fashion-product images. To build our system at scale, these fashion-attributes are again used to build an inverted indexing scheme. In addition to these fashion-attributes for semantic similarity, we extract colour and appearance features in a region-of-interest (ROI) of a fashion item for visual similarity. By sharing our approach, we expect active discussion on that how to apply current computer vision research into the e-commerce industry.
In this work, we propose an interactive system to design diverse high-quality garment images from fashion sketches and the texture information. The major challenge behind this system is to generate high-quality and detailed texture according to the u ser-provided texture information. Prior works mainly use the texture patch representation and try to map a small texture patch to a whole garment image, hence unable to generate high-quality details. In contrast, inspired by intrinsic image decomposition, we decompose this task into texture synthesis and shading enhancement. In particular, we propose a novel bi-colored edge texture representation to synthesize textured garment images and a shading enhancer to render shading based on the grayscale edges. The bi-colored edge representation provides simple but effective texture cues and color constraints, so that the details can be better reconstructed. Moreover, with the rendered shading, the synthesized garment image becomes more vivid.
Given an outfit, what small changes would most improve its fashionability? This question presents an intriguing new vision challenge. We introduce Fashion++, an approach that proposes minimal adjustments to a full-body clothing outfit that will have maximal impact on its fashionability. Our model consists of a deep image generation neural network that learns to synthesize clothing conditioned on learned per-garment encodings. The latent encodings are explicitly factorized according to shape and texture, thereby allowing direct edits for both fit/presentation and color/patterns/material, respectively. We show how to bootstrap Web photos to automatically train a fashionability model, and develop an activation maximization-style approach to transform the input image into its more fashionable self. The edits suggested range from swapping in a new garment to tweaking its color, how it is worn (e.g., rolling up sleeves), or its fit (e.g., making pants baggier). Experiments demonstrate that Fashion++ provides successful edits, both according to automated metrics and human opinion. Project page is at http://vision.cs.utexas.edu/projects/FashionPlus.

In this paper, we introduce attribute-aware fashion-editing, a novel task, to the fashion domain. We re-define the overall objectives in AttGAN and propose the Fashion-AttGAN model for this new task. A dataset is constructed for this task with 14,221 and 22 attributes, which has been made publically available. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our Fashion-AttGAN on fashion editing over the original AttGAN.
