The ultrashort laser excitation of Co/Pt magnetic heterostructures can effectively generate spin and charge currents at the interfaces between magnetic and nonmagnetic layers. The direction of these photocurrents can be controlled by the helicity of the circularly polarized laser light and an external magnetic field. Here, we employ THz time-domain spectroscopy to investigate further the role of interfaces in these photo-galvanic phenomena. In particular, the effects of either Cu or ZnO interlayers on the photocurrents in Co/X/Pt (X = Cu, ZnO) have been studied by varying the thickness of the interlayers up to 5 nm. The results are discussed in terms of spin-diffusion phenomena and interfacial spin-orbit torque.

Femtosecond laser excitation of FeRh/Pt bilayers launches an ultrafast pulse of electric photocurrent in the Pt-layer and thus results in emission of electromagnetic radiation in the THz spectral range. Analysis of the THz emission as a function of p olarization of the femtosecond laser pulse, external magnetic field, sample temperature and sample orientation shows that photocurrent can emerge due to vertical spin pumping and photo-induced inverse spin-orbit torque at the FeRh/Pt interface. The vertical spin pumping from FeRh to Pt does not depend on the polarization of light and originates from ultrafast laser-induced demagnetization of the ferromagnetic phase of FeRh. The photo-induced inverse spin-orbit torque at the FeRh/Pt interface can be described in terms of a helicity-dependent effect of circularly polarized light on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic FeRh and subsequent generation of a photocurrent.
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale topological spin structures offering great promise for next-generation information storage technologies. The recent discovery of sub-100 nm room temperature (RT) skyrmions in several multilayer films has triggered vig orous efforts to modulate their physical properties for their use in devices. Here we present a tunable RT skyrmion platform based on multilayer stacks of Ir/Fe/Co/Pt, which we study using X-ray microscopy, magnetic force microscopy and Hall transport techniques. By varying the ferromagnetic layer composition, we can tailor the magnetic interactions governing skyrmion properties, thereby tuning their thermodynamic stability parameter by an order of magnitude. The skyrmions exhibit a smooth crossover between isolated (metastable) and disordered lattice configurations across samples, while their size and density can be tuned by factors of 2 and 10 respectively. We thus establish a platform for investigating functional sub-50 nm RT skyrmions, pointing towards the development of skyrmion-based memory devices.
The Rashba effect leads to a chiral precession of the spins of moving electrons while the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) generates preference towards a chiral profile of local spins. We predict that the exchange interaction between these two spin systems results in a chiral magnetoresistance depending on the chirality of the local spin texture. We observe this magnetoresistance by measuring the domain wall (DW) resistance in a uniquely designed Pt/Co/Pt zigzag wire, and by changing the chirality of the DW with applying an in-plane magnetic field. A chirality-dependent DW resistance is found, and a quantitative analysis shows a good agreement with a theory based on the Rashba model. Moreover, the DW resistance measurement allows us to independently determine the strength of the Rashba effect and the DMI simultaneously, and the result implies a possible correlation between the Rashba effect, the DMI, and the symmetric Heisenberg exchange.
The magnetic properties of (111)-oriented Rh/Co/Pt and Pd/Co/Pt multilayers are investigated by first-principles calculations. We focus on the interlayer exchange coupling, and identify thicknesses and composition where a typical ferromagnet or a syn thetic antiferromagnet across the spacer layer is formed. All systems under investigation show a collinear magnetic intralayer order, but the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is rather strong for Pd-based systems, so that single magnetic skyrmions can be expected. In general, we find a strong sensitivity of the magnetic parameters (especially the DMI) in Rh-based systems, but Pd-based multilayers are less sensitive to structural details.
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin structures recently discovered at room temperature (RT) in multilayer films. Employing their novel topological properties towards exciting technological prospects requires a mechanistic understanding of the excit ation and relaxation mechanisms governing their stability and dynamics. Here we report on the magnetization dynamics of RT Neel skyrmions in Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayer films. We observe a ubiquitous excitation mode in the microwave absorption spectrum, arising from the gyrotropic resonance of topological skyrmions, and robust over a wide range of temperatures and sample compositions. A combination of simulations and analytical calculations establish that the spectrum is shaped by the interplay of interlayer and interfacial magnetic interactions unique to multilayers, yielding skyrmion resonances strongly renormalized to lower frequencies. Our work provides fundamental spectroscopic insights on the spatiotemporal dynamics of topological spin structures, and crucial directions towards their functionalization in nanoscale devices.
