In this paper, we propose a sequential neural encoder with latent structured description (SNELSD) for modeling sentences. This model introduces latent chunk-level representations into conventional sequential neural encoders, i.e., recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with long short-term memory (LSTM) units, to consider the compositionality of languages in semantic modeling. An SNELSD model has a hierarchical structure that includes a detection layer and a description layer. The detection layer predicts the boundaries of latent word chunks in an input sentence and derives a chunk-level vector for each word. The description layer utilizes modified LSTM units to process these chunk-level vectors in a recurrent manner and produces sequential encoding outputs. These output vectors are further concatenated with word vectors or the outputs of a chain LSTM encoder to obtain the final sentence representation. All the model parameters are learned in an end-to-end manner without a dependency on additional text chunking or syntax parsing. A natural language inference (NLI) task and a sentiment analysis (SA) task are adopted to evaluate the performance of our proposed model. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SNELSD model on exploring task-dependent chunking patterns during the semantic modeling of sentences. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves better performance than conventional chain LSTMs and tree-structured LSTMs on both tasks.

Structured sentences are important expressions in human writings and dialogues. Previous works on neural text generation fused semantic and structural information by encoding the entire sentence into a mixed hidden representation. However, when a gen erated sentence becomes complicated, the structure is difficult to be properly maintained. To alleviate this problem, we explicitly separate the modeling process of semantic and structural information. Intuitively, humans generate structured sentences by directly connecting discourses with discourse markers (such as and, but, etc.). Therefore, we propose a task that mimics this process, called discourse transfer. This task represents a structured sentence as (head discourse, discourse marker, tail discourse), and aims at tail discourse generation based on head discourse and discourse marker. We also propose a corresponding model called TransSent, which interprets the relationship between two discourses as a translation1 from the head discourse to the tail discourse in the embedding space. We experiment TransSent not only in discourse transfer task but also in free text generation and dialogue generation tasks. Automatic and human evaluation results show that TransSent can generate structured sentences with high quality, and has certain scalability in different tasks.
Multimodal neural machine translation (NMT) has become an increasingly important area of research over the years because additional modalities, such as image data, can provide more context to textual data. Furthermore, the viability of training multi modal NMT models without a large parallel corpus continues to be investigated due to low availability of parallel sentences with images, particularly for English-Japanese data. However, this void can be filled with comparable sentences that contain bilingual terms and parallel phrases, which are naturally created through media such as social network posts and e-commerce product descriptions. In this paper, we propose a new multimodal English-Japanese corpus with comparable sentences that are compiled from existing image captioning datasets. In addition, we supplement our comparable sentences with a smaller parallel corpus for validation and test purposes. To test the performance of this comparable sentence translation scenario, we train several baseline NMT models with our comparable corpus and evaluate their English-Japanese translation performance. Due to low translation scores in our baseline experiments, we believe that current multimodal NMT models are not designed to effectively utilize comparable sentence data. Despite this, we hope for our corpus to be used to further research into multimodal NMT with comparable sentences.

Unsupervised structure learning in high-dimensional time series data has attracted a lot of research interests. For example, segmenting and labelling high dimensional time series can be helpful in behavior understanding and medical diagnosis. Recent advances in generative sequential modeling have suggested to combine recurrent neural networks with state space models (e.g., Hidden Markov Models). This combination can model not only the long term dependency in sequential data, but also the uncertainty included in the hidden states. Inheriting these advantages of stochastic neural sequential models, we propose a structured and stochastic sequential neural network, which models both the long-term dependencies via recurrent neural networks and the uncertainty in the segmentation and labels via discrete random variables. For accurate and efficient inference, we present a bi-directional inference network by reparamterizing the categorical segmentation and labels with the recent proposed Gumbel-Softmax approximation and resort to the Stochastic Gradient Variational Bayes. We evaluate the proposed model in a number of tasks, including speech modeling, automatic segmentation and labeling in behavior understanding, and sequential multi-objects recognition. Experimental results have demonstrated that our proposed model can achieve significant improvement over the state-of-the-art methods.
The prevalent approach to neural machine translation relies on bi-directional LSTMs to encode the source sentence. In this paper we present a faster and simpler architecture based on a succession of convolutional layers. This allows to encode the ent ire source sentence simultaneously compared to recurrent networks for which computation is constrained by temporal dependencies. On WMT16 English-Romanian translation we achieve competitive accuracy to the state-of-the-art and we outperform several recently published results on the WMT15 English-German task. Our models obtain almost the same accuracy as a very deep LSTM setup on WMT14 English-French translation. Our convolutional encoder speeds up CPU decoding by more than two times at the same or higher accuracy as a strong bi-directional LSTM baseline.

The recurrent neural networks (RNN) with richly distributed internal states and flexible non-linear transition functions, have overtaken the dynamic Bayesian networks such as the hidden Markov models (HMMs) in the task of modeling highly structured s equential data. These data, such as from speech and handwriting, often contain complex relationships between the underlaying variational factors and the observed data. The standard RNN model has very limited randomness or variability in its structure, coming from the output conditional probability model. This paper will present different ways of using high level latent random variables in RNN to model the variability in the sequential data, and the training method of such RNN model under the VAE (Variational Autoencoder) principle. We will explore possible ways of using adversarial method to train a variational RNN model. Contrary to competing approaches, our approach has theoretical optimum in the model training and provides better model training stability. Our approach also improves the posterior approximation in the variational inference network by a separated adversarial training step. Numerical results simulated from TIMIT speech data show that reconstruction loss and evidence lower bound converge to the same level and adversarial training loss converges to 0.
