Magnetic systems with spins sitting on a lattice of corner sharing regular tetrahedra have been particularly prolific for the discovery of new magnetic states for the last two decades. The pyrochlore compounds have offered the playground for these studies, while little attention has been comparatively devoted to other compounds where the rare earth R occupies the same sub-lattice, e.g. the spinel chalcogenides CdR2X4 (X = S, Se). Here we report measurements performed on powder samples of this series with R = Yb using specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction and muon-spin-relaxation measurements. The two compounds are found to be magnetically similar. They long-range order into structures described by the Gamma_5 irreducible representation. The magnitude of the magnetic moment at low temperature is 0.77 (1) and 0.62 (1) mu_B for X = S and Se, respectively. Persistent spin dynamics is present in the ordered states. The spontaneous field at the muon site is anomalously small, suggesting magnetic moment fragmentation. A double spin-flip tunneling relaxation mechanism is suggested in the cooperative paramagnetic state up to 10 K. The magnetic space groups into which magnetic moments of systems of corner-sharing regular tetrahedra order are provided for a number of insulating compounds characterized by null propagation wavevectors.

The insulating pyrochlore compound Nd2Sn2O7 has been shown to undergo a second order magnetic phase transition at Tc ~ 0.91 K to a noncoplanar all-in--all-out magnetic structure of the Nd3+ magnetic moments. An anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dyna mics has been evidenced from neutron backscattering and muon spin relaxation (muSR). In the case of muSR this has been revealed through the strong effect of a 50 mT longitudinal field on the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Here, motivated by a recent successful work performed for Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7, analyzing the shape of the muSR longitudinal polarization function, we substantiate the existence of extremely slow paramagnetic spin dynamics in the microsecond time range for Nd2Sn2O7. Between 1.7 and 7 K, this time scale is temperature independent. This suggests a double spin-flip tunneling relaxation mechanism to be at play, probably involving spin substructures such as tetrahedra. Unexpectedly, the standard deviation of the field distribution at the muon site increases as the system is cooled. This exotic spin dynamics is in sharp contrast with the dynamics above 100 K which is driven by the Orbach relaxation mechanism involving single Nd3+ magnetic moments.
Neutron scattering and magnetization measurements have been performed on the stuffed pyrochlore system Tb2+xTi2-2xNbxO7. We find that despite the introduction of chemical disorder and increasingly antiferromagnetic interactions, a spin glass transiti on does not occur for T >= 1.5 K and cooperative paramagnetic behavior exists for all x. For x = 1, Tb3NbO7, an antiferromagnetically ordered state coexisting with cooperative paramagnetic behavior is seen without applying any external fields or pressure, a situation advantageous for studying this cooperative behavior.
In the search for topological phases in correlated electron systems, iridium-based pyrochlores A2Ir2O7 -- materials with 5d transition-metal ions -- provide fertile grounds. Several novel topological states have been predicted but the actual realizat ion of such states is believed to critically depend on the strength of local potentials arising from distortions of IrO6-cages. We test this hypothesis by measuring with resonant x-ray scattering the electronic level splittings in the A= Y, Eu systems, which we show to agree very well with ab initio electronic structure calculations. We find, however, that not distortions of IrO6-octahedra are the primary source for quenching the spin-orbit interaction, but strong long-range lattice anisotropies, which inevitably break the local cubic symmetry and will thereby be decisive in determining the systems topological ground state.

In this study an extended low energy phase diagram for NaxCoO2 is experimentally established with emphasis on the high x range. It is based on systematic heat capacity studies on both polycrystalline and single crystalline samples and on uSR measurem ents. Main features are the existence of mass enhancement, spin fluctuations without long-range order, and magnetic order with associated Fermi surface gapping. The latter is seen in the electronic density of states (DOS) and suppression of nuclear specific heat. While there is agreement between the band structure and the low energy DOS in the low x range, in the high x range (x > 0.6) the thermodynamically determined DOS is approximately three times that deduced from the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)-measured band dispersion or local-density approximation (LDA) calculations.
The magnetic properties of the layered oxypnictide LaMnAsO have been revisited using neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. The present measurements identify the N{e}el temperature $T_N$ = 360(1) K. Below $T_N$ the critical exponent descr ibing the magnetic order parameter is $beta$ = 0.33$-$0.35, consistent with a three dimensional Heisenberg model. Above this temperature, diffuse magnetic scattering indicative of short-range magnetic order is observed, and this scattering persists up to $T_{SRO}$ = 650(10) K. The magnetic susceptibility shows a weak anomaly at $T_{SRO}$ and no anomaly at $T_N$. Analysis of the diffuse scattering data using a reverse Monte Carlo algorithm indicates that above $T_N$ nearly two- dimensional, short-range magnetic order is present with a correlation length of 9.3(3) {AA} within the Mn layers at 400 K. The inelastic scattering data reveal a spin-gap of 3.5 meV in the long-range ordered state, and strong, low-energy (quasi-elastic) magnetic excitations emerging in the short-range ordered state. Comparison with other related compounds correlates the distortion of the Mn coordination tetrahedra to the sign of the magnetic exchange along the layer-stacking direction, and suggests that short-range order above $T_N$ is a common feature in the magnetic behavior of layered Mn-based pnictides and oxypnictides.
