In the past two decades, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been used to relate neuronal network activity to cognitive processing and behaviour. Recently this approach has been augmented by algorithms that allow us to infer causal links between component populations of neuronal networks. Multiple inference procedures have been proposed to approach this research question but so far, each method has limitations when it comes to establishing whole-brain connectivity patterns. In this work, we discuss eight ways to infer causality in fMRI research: Bayesian Nets, Dynamical Causal Modelling, Granger Causality, Likelihood Ratios, LiNGAM, Patels Tau, Structural Equation Modelling, and Transfer Entropy. We finish with formulating some recommendations for the future directions in this area.
From philosophers of ancient times to modern economists, biologists and other researchers are engaged in revealing causal relations. The most challenging problem is inferring the type of the causal relationship: whether it is uni- or bi-directional o
Three major biomarkers: beta-amyloid (A), pathologic tau (T), and neurodegeneration (N), are recognized as valid proxies for neuropathologic changes of Alzheimers disease. While there are extensive studies on cerebrospinal fluids biomarkers (amyloid,
Here, we discuss a collection of cutting-edge techniques and applications in use today by some of the leading experts in the field of correlative approaches in single-molecule biophysics. A key difference in emphasis, compared with traditional single
Recent technological advances in Next Generation Sequencing tools have led to increasing speeds of DNA sample collection, preparation, and sequencing. One instrument can produce over 600 Gb of genetic sequence data in a single run. This creates new o
In this paper we present a new localization method SMS-LORETA (Simultaneous Multiple Sources- Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography), capable to locate efficiently multiple simultaneous sources. The new method overcomes some of the drawback
