A formula for the ionization rate in extremely intense electromagnetic field is proposed and used for numerical study of QED (quantum-electrodynamical) cascades in noble gases in the field of two counter-propagating laser pulses. It is shown that the number of the electron-positron pairs produced in the cascade increases with the atomic number of the gas where the gas density is taken to be reversely proportional to the atomic number. While the most electrons produced in the laser pulse front are expelled by the ponderomotive force from region occupied by the strong laser field there is a small portion of the electrons staying in the laser field for a long time until the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. This mechanism is relevant for all gases. For high-$Z$ gases there is an additional mechanism associated with the ionization of inner shells at the the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. The role of both mechanisms for cascade initiation is revealed.

The QED cascade induced by the two counter-propagating lasers is studied. It is demonstrated that the probability of a seed-photon to create a pair is much larger than that of a seed-electron. By analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the electron and positron created by the seed-photon, it is found that the created particles are more probable to emit photons than the seed-electron. With these result, further more, we also demonstrate that the QED cascade can be easier to be triggered by the seed-photon than by the seed-electron with the same incident energy and the same laser.
Absorption covers the physical processes which convert intense photon flux into energetic particles when a high-power laser illuminates optically-thick matter. It underpins important petawatt-scale applications today, e.g., medical-quality proton bea m production. However, development of ultra-high-field applications has been hindered since no study so far has described absorption throughout the entire transition from the classical to the quantum electrodynamical (QED) regime of plasma physics. Here we present a model of absorption that holds over an unprecedented six orders-of-magnitude in optical intensity and lays the groundwork for QED applications of laser-driven particle beams. We demonstrate 58% efficient gamma-ray production at $1.8times 10^{25}~mathrm{W~ cm^{-2}}$ and the creation of an anti-matter source achieving $4times 10^{24} mathrm{positrons} mathrm{cm^{-3}}$, $10^{6}~times$ denser than of any known photonic scheme. These results will find applications in scaled laboratory probes of black hole and pulsar winds, gamma-ray radiography for materials science and homeland security, and fundamental nuclear physics.
Development of the self-sustained quantum-electrodynamical (QED) cascade in a single strong laser pulse is studied analytically and numerically. The hydrodynamical approach is used to construct the analytical model of the cascade evolution, which inc ludes the key features of the cascade observed in 3D QED particle-in-cell (QED-PIC) simulations such as the magnetic field predominance in the cascade plasma and laser energy absorption. The equations of the model are derived in the closed form and are solved numerically. Direct comparison between the solutions of the model equations and 3D QED-PIC simulations shows that our model is able to describe the complex nonlinear process of the cascade development qualitatively well. The various regimes of the interaction based on the intensity of the laser pulse are revealed in both the solutions of the model equations and the results of the QED-PIC simulations.
Single-shot laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) measurements of multi-type free-standing ultrathin foils were performed in vacuum environment for 800 nm laser pulses with durations {tau} ranging from 50 fs to 200 ps. Results show that the laser dam age threshold fluences (DTFs) of the ultrathin foils are significantly lower than those of corresponding bulk materials. Wide band gap dielectric targets such as SiN and formvar have larger DTFs than those of semiconductive and conductive targets by 1-3 orders of magnitude depending on the pulse duration. The damage mechanisms for different types of targets are studied. Based on the measurement, the constrain of the LIDTs on the laser contrast is discussed.

Direct investigation of ion-induced dynamics in matter on picosecond (ps, 10-12 s) timescales has been precluded to date by the relatively long nanosecond (ns, 10-9 s) scale ion pulses typically provided by radiofrequency accelerators1. By contrast, laser-driven ion accelerators provide bursts of ps duration2, but have yet to be applied to the study of ultrafast ion-induced transients in matter. We report on the evolution of an electron-hole plasma excited in borosilicate glass by such bursts. This is observed as an onset of opacity to synchronised optical probe radiation and is characterised by the 3.0 +/- 0.8 ps ion pump rise-time . The observed decay-time of 35 +/- 3 ps i.e. is in excellent agreement with modelling and reveals the rapidly evolving electron temperature (>10 3 K) and carrier number density (>10 17cm-3). This result demonstrates that ps laser accelerated ion bursts are directly applicable to investigating the ultrafast response of matter to ion interactions and, in particular, to ultrafast pulsed ion radiolysis of water3-5, the radiolytic decompositions of which underpin biological cell damage and hadrontherapy for cancer treatment6.
