Two-leg spin-1/2 ladder systems consisting of a ferromagnetic leg and an antiferromagnetic leg are considered where the spins on the legs interact through antiferromagnetic rung couplings $J_1$. These ladders can have two geometrical arrangements either zigzag or normal ladder and these systems are frustrated irrespective of their geometry. This frustration gives rise to incommensurate spin density wave, dimer and spin fluid phases in the ground state. The magnetization in the systems decreases linearly with $J^2_1$, and the systems show an incommensurate phase for $0.0<J_1<1.0$. The spin-spin correlation functions in the incommensurate phase follow power law decay which is very similar to Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in external magnetic field. In large $J_1$ limit, the normal ladder behaves like a collection of singlet dimers, whereas the zigzag ladder behaves as a one dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain.

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emerg ent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.
Single crystals of the frustrated S=1/2 ferro-antiferromagnetic proximate square lattice material SrZnZnVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ are studied in magnetometric, calorimetric, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The measured spin wav e spectrum reveals a substantial degree of magnetic frustration and a large quantum renormalization of the exchange constants. The H-T magnetic phase diagram is established. It features a novel pre-saturation phase, which appears for only one particular field orientation. The results are discussed noting the similarities and differences with the previously studied and similarly structured Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ compound.

We investigate a spin-$1/2$ two-leg honeycomb ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling along the legs, which is equivalent to two $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chains coupled with $J_perp$ at odd rungs. The full parameter region of the model i s systematically studied using conventional and infinite density-matrix renormalization group as well as bosonization. The rich phase diagram consists of five distinct phases: A Haldane phase, a NNN-Haldane phase and a staggered dimer phase when $J_{perp} < 0$; a rung singlet phase and a columnar dimer phase when $J_{perp} > 0$. An interesting reentrant behavior from the dimerized phase into the Haldane phase is found as the frustration $J_2$ increases. The universalities of the critical phase transitions are fully analyzed. Phase transitions between dimerized and disordered phases belong to the two-dimensional Ising class with central charge $c=1/2$. The transition from the Haldane phase to NNN-Haldane phase is of a weak topological first order, while the continuous transition between the Haldane phase and rung singlet phase has central charge $c=2$.
We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic p roperties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of frustration due to weak interladder couplings.
Specific heat ($C_V$) measurements in the spin-1/2 Cu$_2$(C$_2$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$ system under a magnetic field up to $H=8.25 T$ are reported and compared to the results of numerical calculations based on the 2-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder. While the temperature dependences of both the susceptibility and the low field specific heat are accurately reproduced by this model, deviations are observed below the critical field $H_{C1}$ at which the spin gap closes. In this Quantum High Field phase, the contribution of the low-energy quantum fluctuations are stronger than in the Heisenberg ladder model. We argue that this enhancement can be attributed to dynamical lattice fluctuations. Finally, we show that such a Heisenberg ladder, for $H>H_{C1}$, is unstable, when coupled to the 3D lattice, against a lattice distortion. These results provide an alternative explanation for the observed low temperature ($T_Csim 0.5K$ -- $0.8K$) phase (previously interpreted as a 3D magnetic ordering) as a new type of incommensurate gapped state.
