SN Hun248 was classified as a nonterminal eruption (a SN impostor) from a directly identified and highly variable cool hypergiant star. The 2014 outburst achieved peak luminosity equivalent to that of the historic eruption of luminous blue variable (LBV) Eta Car, and exhibited a multipeaked optical light curve that rapidly faded after ~100 days. We report ultraviolet (UV) through optical observations of SN Hunt248 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) about 1 yr after the outburst, and mid-infrared observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope before the burst and in decline. The HST data reveal a source that is a factor of ~10 dimmer in apparent brightness than the faintest available measurement of the precursor star. The UV-optical spectral energy distribution (SED) requires a strong Balmer continuum, consistent with a hot B4-B5 photosphere attenuated by grey circumstellar extinction. Substantial mid-infrared excess of the source is consistent with thermal emission from hot dust with a mass of 10^{-6} - 10^{-5} MSun and a geometric extent that is comparable to the expansion radius of the ejecta from the 2014 event. SED modeling indicates that the dust consists of relatively large grains (>0.3 um), which could be related to the grey circumstellar extinction that we infer for the UV-optical counterpart. Revised analysis of the precursor photometry is also consistent with grey extinction by circumstellar dust, and suggests that the initial mass of the star could be twice as large as previously estimated (nearly ~60 MSun). Reanalysis of the earlier outburst data shows that the peak luminosity and outflow velocity of the eruption are consistent with a trend exhibited by stellar merger candidates, prompting speculation that SN Hunt248 may also have stemmed from a massive stellar merger or common-envelope ejection.

We present mid-IR photometry and spectra of the merged binary V1309 Sco taken between 18 and 23 months after outburst. Strong mid-IR emission and a solid state absorption feature indicate the presence of a significant amount of dust in the circumstel lar environment. The absence of detectable mid-IR emission before the outburst suggests this dust was produced in the eruptive merger event. Model fits to the solid state absorption feature constrain the constituent species and column density of the dust around V1309 Sco. We find the absorption feature can be reproduced by large (3 micron) amorphous pyroxene grains at a temperature of 800 K. This grain size, if confirmed with longer wavelength spectroscopy and modelling, would be suggestive of dust processing in the circumstellar environment. The data in hand do not allow us to discriminate between disk or shell configurations for the dusty material.
We report on updated radio imaging observations of the radio remnant of Supernova 1987A (SN 1987A) at 9 GHz, taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), covering a 25-year period (1992-2017). We use Fourier modeling of the supernova remn ant to model its morphology, using both a torus model and a ring model, and find both models show an increasing flux density, and have shown a continuing expansion of the remnant. As found in previous studies, we find the torus model most accurately fits our data, and has shown a change in the remnant expansion at Day 9,300 $pm$210 from 2,300 $pm$200 km/s to 3,610 $pm$240 km/s. We have also seen an increase in brightness in the western lobe of the remnant, although the eastern lobe is still the dominant source of emission, unlike what has been observed at contemporary optical and X-ray wavelengths. We expect to observe a reversal in this asymmetry by the year $sim$2020, and note the south-eastern side of the remnant is now beginning to fade, as has also been seen in optical and X-ray data. Our data indicate that high-latitude emission has been present in the remnant from the earliest stages of the shockwave interacting with the equatorial ring around Day 5,000. However, we find the emission has become increasingly dominated by the low-lying regions by Day 9,300, overlapping with the regions of X-ray emission. We conclude that the shockwave is now leaving the equatorial ring, exiting first from the south-east region of the remnant, and is re-accelerating as it begins to interact with the circumstellar medium beyond the dense inner ring.

We present new late-time near-infrared imaging of the site of the nearby core-collapse supernova SN 2012aw, confirming the disappearance of the point source identified by Fraser et al. (2012) and Van Dyk et al. (2012) as a candidate progenitor in bot h J and Ks filters. We re-measure the progenitor photometry, and find that both the J and Ks magnitudes of the source are consistent with those quoted in the literature. We also recover a marginal detection of the progenitor in H-band, for which we measure H=19.67+/-0.40 mag. Comparing the luminosity of the progenitor to stellar evolutionary models, SN 2012aw appears to have resulted from the explosion of a 12.5+/-1.5 Msun red supergiant.
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2013aa and SN 2017cbv, two nearly identical type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the host galaxy NGC 5643. The optical photometry has been obtained using the same telescope and instruments used by the Carnegie Supernova Project. This eliminates most instrumental systematics and provides light curves in a stable and well-understood photometric system. Having the same host galaxy also eliminates systematics due to distance and peculiar velocity, providing an opportunity to directly test the relative precision of SNe Ia as standard candles. The two SNe have nearly identical decline rates, negligible reddening, and remarkably similar spectra and, at a distance of $sim 20$ Mpc, are ideal as potential calibrators for the absolute distance using primary indicators such as Cepheid variables. We discuss to what extent these two SNe can be considered twins and compare them with other supernova siblings in the literature and their likely progenitor scenarios. Using 12 galaxies that hosted 2 or more SNe~Ia, we find that when using SNe~Ia, and after accounting for all sources of observational error, one gets consistency in distance to 3 percent.
Spitzers final Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations of SN 1987A show the 3.6 and 4.5 $mu$m emission from the equatorial ring (ER) continues a period of steady decline. Deconvolution of the images reveals that the emission is dominated by the rin g, not the ejecta, and is brightest on the west side. Decomposition of the marginally resolved emission also confirms this, and shows that the west side of the ER has been brightening relative to the other portions of the ER. The infrared (IR) morphological changes resemble those seen in both the soft X-ray emission and the optical emission. The integrated ER light curves at 3.6 and 4.5 $mu$m are more similar to the optical light curves than the soft X-ray light curve, though differences would be expected if dust is responsible for this emission and its destruction is rapid. Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope will continue to monitor the ER evolution, and will reveal the true spectrum and nature of the material responsible for the broadband emission at 3.6 and 4.5 $mu$m. The present observations also serendipitously reveal a nearby variable source, subsequently identified as a Be star, that has gone through a multi-year outburst during the course of these observations.
