Change of the energy characteristics of muon bundles with an increase of the primary cosmic ray particles energy can be a key to solving the problem of muon excess in the extensive air showers (EAS) observed in a number of experiments. In this work the data on the energy deposit of multi-muon events in a wide range of zenith angles (and as a consequence in a wide range of primary particles energies) obtained with NEVOD-DECOR setup over a long time period are presented. The experimental data are compared with the results of simulations of EAS muon component performed using CORSIKA code.

Local muon density spectra (LMDS) at various zenith angles have been reconstructed from the data of two detectors of the Experimental complex NEVOD. The inclined muon bundles at the ground level were detected with the coordinate detector DECOR, and f or the near-vertical direction with the calibration telescope system (CTS) of the Cherenkov water detector. In comparison with the earlier DECOR results, the experimental statistics has been increased by 2-3 times for different ranges of zenith angle and muon bundle multiplicity and is now based on about 40,000 h of the setup operation. The live time of measurements with CTS is about 12,000 h. It is found with both setups that the slope of LMDS is increasing above the primary energy of about 1017 eV. The details of the experiment and data analysis are presented.
A new project is developed with the implementation of a relatively new method of studying the primary cosmic ray -- the registration of extensive air showers optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (Cherenkov light) reflected from the snow surface. The a im of the project is the study of the cosmic ray mass composition in the energy range of 1-100 PeV by detecting the reflected extensive air showers Cherenkov light. Silicon photomultipliers are planned to be used as the main photosensitive element of the detector and an unmanned aerial vehicle will is planned to lift the measuring equipment over the snow-covered ground.
We have studied the distribution patterns of lateral density, arrival time and angular position of Cherenkov photons generated in Extensive Air Showers (EASs) initiated by $gamma$-ray, proton and iron primaries incident with various energies and at v arious zenith angles. This study is the extension of our earlier work cite{Hazarika} to cover a wide energy range of ground based $gamma$-ray astronomy with a wide range of zenith angles ($le 40^circ$) of primary particles, as well as the extension to study the angular distribution patterns of Cherenkov photons in EASs. This type of study is important for distinguishing the $gamma$-ray initiated showers from the hadronic showers in the ground based $gamma$-ray astronomy, where Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique (ACT) is being used. Importantly, such study gives an insight on the nature of $gamma$-ray and hadronic showers in general. In this work, the CORSIKA 6.990 simulation code is used for generation of EASs. Similarly to the case of Ref.cite{Hazarika}, this study also revealed that, the lateral density and arrival time distributions of Cherenkov photons vary almost in accordance with the functions: $rho_{ch}(r) = rho_{0};e^{-beta r}$ and $t_{ch}(r) = t_{0}e^{Gamma/r^{lambda}}$ respectively by taking different values of the parameters of functions for the type, energy and zenith angle of the primary particle. The distribution of Cherenkov photons angular positions with respect to shower axis shows distinctive features depending on the primary type, its energy and the zenith angle.
Aimed at progress in MeV gamma-ray astronomy which has not yet been well-explored, Compton telescope missions with a variety of detector concepts have been proposed so far. One of the key techniques for these future missions is an event reconstructio n algorithm that is able to determine the scattering orders of multiple Compton scattering events and to identify events in which gamma rays escape from the detectors before they deposit all of their energies. We propose a new algorithm that can identify whether the gamma rays escape from the detectors or not, in addition to the scattering order determination. This algorithm also corrects incoming gamma-ray energies for escape events. The developed algorithm is based on the maximum likelihood method, and we present a general formalism of likelihood functions describing physical interactions inside the detector. We also introduce several approximations in the calculation of the likelihood functions for efficient computation. For validation, we have applied the algorithm to simulation data of a Compton telescope using a liquid argon time projection chamber, which is a new type of Compton telescope proposed for the GRAMS mission, and have confirmed that it works successfully for up to 8-hit events. The proposed algorithm can be used for next-generation MeV gamma-ray missions featured by large-volume detectors, e.g., GRAMS and AMEGO.
The SPHERE-2 balloon-borne detector designed for extensive air shower (EAS) observations using EAS optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (``Cherenkov light), reflected from the snow-covered surface of Lake Baikal is described. We briefly discuss the co ncept behind the reflected Cherenkov light method, characterize the conditions at the experimental site and overview the construction of the tethered balloon used to lift the SPHERE-2 telescope above the surface. This paper is mainly dedicated to a detailed technical description of the detector, including its optical system, sensitive elements, electronics, and data acquisition system (DAQ). The results of some laboratory and field tests of the optical system are presented.
