In additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, chaos has been proved to be the optimal coherent communication waveform in the sense of using very simple matched filter to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Recently, Lyapunov exponent spectrum of the chaotic signals after being transmitted through a wireless channel has been shown to be unaltered, paving the way for wireless communication using chaos. In wireless communication systems, inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation is one of the main obstacles to achieve high bit transmission rate and low bit error rate (BER). How to resist multipath effect is a fundamental problem in a chaos-based wireless communication system (CWCS). In this paper, implementation of a CWCS is presented. It is built to transmit chaotic signals generated by a hybrid dynamical system and then to filter the received signals by using the corresponding matched filter to decrease the noise effect and to detect the binary information. We find that the multipath effect can be effectively resisted by regrouping the return map of the received signal and by setting the corresponding threshold based on the available information. We show that the optimal threshold is a function of the channel parameters and of the transmitted information symbols. Practically, the channel parameters are time-variant, and the future information symbols are unavailable. In this case, a suboptimal threshold (SOT) is proposed, and the BER using the SOT is derived analytically. Simulation results show that the CWCS achieves a remarkable competitive performance even under inaccurate channel parameters.

One of the key enablers of future wireless communications is constituted by massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which can improve the spectral efficiency by orders of magnitude. However, in existing massive MIMO systems, convention al phased arrays are used for beamforming, which result in excessive power consumption and hardware cost. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been considered as one of the revolutionary technologies to enable energy-efficient and smart wireless communications, which is a two-dimensional structure with a large number of passive elements. In this paper, we propose and develop a new type of high-gain yet low-cost RIS having 256 elements. The proposed RIS combines the functions of phase shift and radiation together on an electromagnetic surface, where positive intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes are used to realize 2-bit phase shifting for beamforming. Based on this radical design, the worlds first wireless communication prototype using RIS having 256 2-bit elements is designed and developed. Specifically, the prototype conceived consists of modular hardware and flexible software, including the hosts for parameter setting and data exchange, the universal software radio peripherals (USRPs) for baseband and radio frequency (RF) signal processing, as well as the RIS for signal transmission and reception. Our performance evaluation confirms the feasibility and efficiency of RISs in future wireless communications. More particularly, it is shown that a 21.7 dBi antenna gain can be obtained by the proposed RIS at 2.3 GHz, while at the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency, i.e., 28.5 GHz, a 19.1 dBi antenna gain can be achieved. Furthermore, the over-the-air (OTA) test results show that the RIS-based wireless communication prototype developed is capable of significantly reducing the power consumption.
The standard approach to the design of individual space-time codes is based on optimizing diversity and coding gains. This geometric approach leads to remarkable examples, such as perfect space-time block codes, for which the complexity of Maximum Li kelihood (ML) decoding is considerable. Code diversity is an alternative and complementary approach where a small number of feedback bits are used to select from a family of space-time codes. Different codes lead to different induced channels at the receiver, where Channel State Information (CSI) is used to instruct the transmitter how to choose the code. This method of feedback provides gains associated with beamforming while minimizing the number of feedback bits. It complements the standard approach to code design by taking advantage of different (possibly equivalent) realizations of a particular code design. Feedback can be combined with sub-optimal low complexity decoding of the component codes to match ML decoding performance of any individual code in the family. It can also be combined with ML decoding of the component codes to improve performance beyond ML decoding performance of any individual code. One method of implementing code diversity is the use of feedback to adapt the phase of a transmitted signal as shown for 4 by 4 Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (QOSTBC) and multi-user detection using the Alamouti code. Code diversity implemented by selecting from equivalent variants is used to improve ML decoding performance of the Golden code. This paper introduces a family of full rate circulant codes which can be linearly decoded by fourier decomposition of circulant matrices within the code diversity framework. A 3 by 3 circulant code is shown to outperform the Alamouti code at the same transmission rate.
In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop energy harvesting-based fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying communication system, subject to fading impairments, is investigated. We consider a source node ($S$) communicating with a destination n ode ($D$) through a fixed distant relay ($R$), which harvests energy from its received signals and uses it to amplify and forward the received signals to $D$. Power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes are considered in the analysis for energy harvesting. The $S$-$R$ and $R$-$D$ hops are modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ and $alpha $-$mu $ fading models, respectively. Closed-form expressions for the statistical properties of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived, based on which novel closed-form expressions for the average symbol error rate (ASER) as well as average channel capacity (ACC) considering four adaptive transmission policies are derived. The derived expressions are validated through Monte-Carlo simulations.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a novel burgeoning concept, which possesses advantages in enhancing wireless communication and user localization, while maintaining low hardware cost and energy consumption. Herein, we establish an IRS-aided mm Wave-MIMO based joint localization and communication system (IMM-JLCS), and probe into its performance evaluation and optimization design. Specifically, first, we provide the signal, channel and estimation error models, and contrive the working process of the IMM-JLCS in detail. Then, by configuring appropriate IRS phase shifts, we derive the closed-form expressions of the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of the position/orientation estimation errors and the effective achievable data rate (EADR), with respect to the time allocation ratio of the beam alignment and localization stage (BALS). Subsequently, we investigate the trade-off between the two performance metrics, for which we propose a joint optimization algorithm. Finally, we carry out simulations and comparisons to view the trade-off and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, in the presence of distinct levels of estimation uncertainty and user mobility. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can find the joint optimal solution for the position/orientation estimation accuracy and EADR, with its optimization performance being robust to slight localization or channel estimation errors and user mobility.

This paper studies unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless communication, where a rotarywing UAV is dispatched to send/collect data to/from multiple ground nodes (GNs). We aim to minimize the total UAV energy consumption, including both propul sion energy and communication related energy, while satisfying the communication throughput requirement of each GN. To this end, we first derive an analytical propulsion power consumption model for rotary-wing UAVs, and then formulate the energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and communication time allocation among GNs, as well as the total mission completion time. The problem is difficult to be optimally solved, as it is non-convex and involves infinitely many variables over time. To tackle this problem, we first consider the simple fly-hover-communicate design, where the UAV successively visits a set of hovering locations and communicates with one corresponding GN when hovering at each location. For this design, we propose an efficient algorithm to optimize the hovering locations and durations, as well as the flying trajectory connecting these hovering locations, by leveraging the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and convex optimization techniques. Next, we consider the general case where the UAV communicates also when flying. We propose a new path discretization method to transform the original problem into a discretized equivalent with a finite number of optimization variables, for which we obtain a locally optimal solution by applying the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results show the significant performance gains of the proposed designs over benchmark schemes, in achieving energy-efficient communication with rotary-wing UAVs.
