The ferrimagnetic spinel Mn3O4 exhibits large and anisotropic changes in electronic and structural properties in response to an applied magnetic field. These changes are thought to result from the field-dependent tuning---via strong spin-lattice coupling---between two nearly degenerate magnetostructural phases. Recent variable-magnetic-field studies of Mn3O4 have been performed on melt-grown crystals, which can exhibit twin domains due to a Jahn-Teller structural transition below the melting temperature. Because of the near degeneracy of the magnetostructural phases, however, strain associated with the twin domains likely affects the magnetic responses of Mn3O4. In this report, we present a variable-magnetic-field Raman scattering study of untwinned Mn3O4 crystals grown out of a flux below the Jahn-Teller structural transition. We measure distinct q = 0 magnetic and vibrational excitation spectra for each isolated magnetostructural phase of untwinned Mn3O4 crystals and determine the symmetries of the observed excitations. We determine how the magnetostructural phase mixture changes in response to magnetic fields applied in the magnetic easy plane. Lastly, by comparing results on flux- and melt-grown Mn3O4 crystals, we show that the intrinsic mixture of the two magnetostructural phases is indeed strongly influenced by the presence of twin domains.

A major focus of experimental interest in Sr2IrO4 has been to clarify how the magnetic excitations of this strongly spin-orbit coupled system differ from the predictions of anisotropic 2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and to explore the extent to which s trong spin-orbit coupling affects the magnetic properties of iridates. Here, we present a high-resolution inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of Sr2IrO4 and doped Eu-doped Sr2IrO4 as functions of both temperature and applied magnetic field. We show that the high-field (H>1.5 T) in-plane spin dynamics of Sr2IrO4 are isotropic and governed by the interplay between the applied field and the small in-plane ferromagnetic spin components induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. However, the spin dynamics of Sr2IrO4 at lower fields (H<1.5 T) exhibit important effects associated with interlayer coupling and in-plane anisotropy, including a spin-flop transition at Hc in Sr2IrO4 that occurs either discontinuously or via a continuous rotation of the spins, depending upon the in-plane orientation of the applied field. These results show that in-plane anisotropy and interlayer coupling effects play important roles in the low-field magnetic and dynamical properties of Sr2IrO4.
The effect of optical pumping and applied magnetic field on the characteristics of ferromagnetic layers in one-dimensional superlattices is studied. At low enough temperatures, these layers correspond to phase separation domains in RMn_2O_5 and R_{0. 8}Ce_{0.2}Mn_2O_5 multiferroics. The formation of such domains occurs owing to the charge ordering of Mn^{3+} and Mn^{4+} ions and to the finite probability for e_g electrons to tunnel between these pairs of ions. The volume occupied by such superlattices is rather small, and they can be treated as isolated ferromagnetic semiconductor heterostructures, spontaneously formed in the host crystal. The sequences of ferromagnetic resonances related to the superlattice layers in Eu_{0.8}Ce_{0.2}Mn_2O_5 are studied. The characteristics of these resonances give information on the properties of such layers. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the optical pumping gives rise to a new metastable state of superlattices, which can be recovered by the magnetic field cycling to the state existing before the optical pumping. It is found that the superlattices recovered by the magnetic field exist up to temperatures higher than those in as-grown crystals.
Recent STM measurements have observed many inhomogeneous patterns of the local density of states on the surface of high-T_c cuprates. As a first step to study such disordered strong correlated systems, we use the BdG equation for the t-t-t-J model wi th an impurity. The impurity is taken into account by a local potential or local variation of the hopping/exchange terms. Strong correlation is treated by a Gutzwiller mean-field theory with local Gutzwiller factors and local chemical potentials. It turned out that the potential impurity scattering is greatly suppressed, while the local variation of hoppings/exchanges is enhanced.
We investigated temperature dependent Raman spectra of the one-dimensional spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. At low temperatures a two-magnon peak is identified at 3160+/-10 cm^(-1) and its temperature dependence analyzed in terms of a thermal expansion model. We find that the two-magnon peak position must include a cyclic ring exchange of J_cycl/J_perp=0.09-0.25 with a coupling constant along the rungs of J_perp approx. 1215 cm^(-1) (1750 K) in order to be consistent with other experiments and theoretical results.
Raman scattering experiments on LaFeAsO with splitted antiferromagnetic (T_AFM = 140 K) and tetragonal-orthorhombic (T_S = 155 K) transitions show a quasi-elastic peak (QEP) in B2g symmetry (2 Fe tetragonal cell) that fades away below ~T_AFM and is a scribed to electronic nematic fluctuations. A scaling of the reported shear modulus with the T-dependence of the QEP height rather than the QEP area indicates that magnetic degrees of freedom drive the structural transition. The large separation between T_S and T_AFM in LaFeAsO compared with their coincidence in BaFe2As2 manifests itself in slower dynamics of nematic fluctuations in the former.
